The membership voted on the charities which would receive the $1500 that was returned from Bridges of Hope. It was decided to give $500 to 3 different charities. The winners were MOCA House, Viola Startzman Free Clinic, and People to People.

The retreat committee members would like feedback of one positive, and one suggestion from those who attended. The participants showed the quilts they had made during the class. What a variety of colors.

2010 QUILT SHOW……YES, 2010!

In 2010 the Guild made the decision to donate the profit from our 2010 raffle quilt to the local Bridges of Hope program. Unfortunately, that program was ended in February 2011 and our $1500 was returned. We need to decide upon another organization that would benefit from a $1500 donation. The following suggestions have been made: Viola Startzman clinic, People to People, Every Woman’s House, Pregnancy Care Center, children’s Services, Salvation Army. A vote will be held during the May meeting to make this important decision.

2012 QUILT SHOW

Sarah Bistline has volunteered to chair the 2012 Quilt Show. Currently on the show committee are Pat Hall, Toni Phillips, Ruth Bishop, Jim Rawdon, Mabel Stocker and Barb Byler. Think you might be interested? There is still time and plenty of space on this committee!! Sign up at the May meeting.

Call to Order by president, Mabel Stoker. She thanked the refreshment committee of Vicky Hartzler and Mary Green. A guest, Linda Miller, was also the speaker for the evening.

Birthdays were announced by Dorothy Pearson, Sunshine committee. Mabel read the quilters horoscope for Aries.

Secretary’s report as included in the newsletter, and available at the meeting. It was approved as written.

Treasurer’s report was read by Jeri Fickes. There is a balance of $7,163.93 due to the payment for the retreat. It will be reduced as the bills are paid. Also see old business.

Old business “I Spy” blocks were swapped by those who brought blocks.

The sign up sheets for making the first baby boy and girl of 2012 will be distributed in May. Think about whether you would like to volunteer.

Due to factors such as economic slowdown and lack of local employment opportunities, the local Bridges of Hope was not able to help as many families as initially hoped, and closed in February, 2011. They have returned the $1,500 the guild had donated to them. This amount is included in the treasurer’s report. A sheet was passed around to list charities the members would be interested in donating the money to. It will be voted on at the May meeting.

New Business Bids were taken for the file cabinet, and it has a new home.

The community Choral concert will be on May 14 at the Wooster High school. They will also have work from local artists there, including quilters. Some of the members have volunteered to donate, and to help watch the display during the event.

On May 9th, the guild program will be a panel on quilting with Effie Troyer talking about hand quilting, Laura Noletti on home machine quilting, Sarah Bistline on long arm quilting, and Ruth Bishop on knotting.

Committee reports
Picnic committee reminded members to make the table runner for the challenge, to bring your own place setting, and a covered dish.

Volunteer work—quilt knotting will be done at MCC on April 13th from 9:15 to 2 or 3pm, or as long as people want to stay. There will be beef vegetable soup supplied for lunch.

Workshops and trips. The retreat starts April 29th. There are 20 people signed up, and more are welcome. Mary Lou gave info on the classes. All members are invited to attend the lecture at 7pm on Saturday, April 30 for free. If you also want dinner, it costs $22.00. Please let Mary Lou, Vicky or Janice know if you are coming, so the correct number of chairs can be prepared for the lecture and/or dinner.

The quilt show, 2012 chair person will be Sarah Bistline.

Program was by Linda Miller, long arm quilter, and judge. She was the judge for our show in August, 2010, and gave information about the things judges look for, as well as the things they can and cannot say about the quilts during judging.

FYI: COMMUNITY CONTACT

I have been contacted regarding an antique crazy quilt that someone would like to have finished. If anyone would be interested in contacting this person and perhaps sewing on the quilt, please let me know. Thanks! Barb baquilter33@aol.com

TIP OF THE MONTH

When you’re sorting your fabrics for a scrap quilt, don’t put them light, light, medium, medium, dark, dark. Mix them up because that’s how your eye is going to see them in a finished quilt.

One reason to press seams to one side is to keep the batting inside the quilt. Pressing the seams open allows spaces between the stitches for batting, especially polyester fibers, to wiggle through to the front.

Minutes of the March Meeting

Tree City Quilt Guild
March 14, 2011

Minutes

Call to Order by president, Mabel Stocker. She thanked the refreshment committee of Effie Troyer, Jim Rawdon, and Terry Giet. New members and guests were introduced.

If you have any corrections or additions to the Program book, contact Jane Richardson so she can put them in the newsletter

Birthdays were announced by Dorothy Pearson, Sunshine committee. Donna Williams fell and cracked her arm and is in a splint. Please let Dorothy know of anyone else sick or in need of a card.

Secretary’s report was available on the tables and in the newsletter. It was approved as written.

Treasurer’s report was read by Jane Richardson. The total as of 3/6/11 is $4,600.88. This includes recent funds from NEORQC and the raffle baskets at the NEROQC meeting in Wooster.

No old business

New business

The church had asked to have the filing cabinet with our library books removed from the room we were storing it in. This has been done, and the cabinet will be up for auction next month.

The April meeting will be on binding, mitered corners, miniature quilts and questions presented by Linda Miller, the judge for our last quilt show.

Mabel asked for a volunteer to be the guild historian to organize photos of past events and programs books. Please contact Mabel if interested.

Mabel asked for a volunteer to be a Kitchen coordinator to keep the kitchen stocked for the refreshment committees. Pat Hall volunteered.

Jane Richardson passed around a sheet for volunteers to bring quilted items to display at the Wayne County Choral Union’s event in May at the high school. There will be displays of local crafters, including potters and quilters items. The Choral Union will sing as will the Canton Hall of Fame Barbershop group.

Vicky Hartzler asked anyone interested in trading ‘I Spy” blocks to bring them next month. The way it works, is to agree with another person about the number of blocks you two will exchange. That way you can choose the items or blocks you want for your quilt. Vicky wants 4 ½” blocks, and some want 6” blocks. Bring what you would like to collect.

The Akron Art Museum will have an exibit "Kaleidoscope Quilts: The Art of Paula Nadelstern" from June 18 to October 2, 2001. This will correspond with the lecture and demo Laura Noletti is doing in June 28, on kaleidoscope quilts.

The NEORQC meeting went well, as financially profitable and members reported enjoying it.

Committee Reports

Workshop Committee: The workshop on Saturday, 3/19/11 is on the expandable bag, presented by Dorothy Pearson fron 9 am ot 2pm. Instructions are with Dorothy; fee is $5.00.

All members may attend the lecture on 4/30/11 for free; dinner and the lecture costs $22 and is an option for members. Please mention the retreat to friends, as the hope is to have closer to the 35 maximum participants.

Picnic Committee: Effie Troyer reported that the challenge will be a table runner using any fabric or pattern. Bring a covered dish and table service. Beverages will be provided.

Program was presented by Mary LouNuzum on preparing fabric, cutting, accurate sewing, matching and other tips on piecing and curved piecing.

Meeting adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,
Vicky Hartzler.
