February Newsletter and January Minutes

Tree City Quilters
The purpose of this organization shall be to create, stimulate, and maintain an interest in all matters pertaining to the making of quilts and to establish and promote educational endeavors through quilts.

Meeting: February 11, 2013, 7:00 PM

Parkview Christian Church

1912 Burbank Road

MEETING: Sewing Straw Hats

How many of you are aware that our very own Sarah McKee is involved with re-enacting? Sarah does quite a bit of sewing to make her period correct clothing. Plus, accessories! Sarah will be showing us how to sew our own straw hats. See you there!

National Quilt Association

At the January meeting our membership voted that the Tree City Quilters will join the National Quilting Association as a chapter. One of requirements of the NQA to become a chapter member is that there are at least five individual members who belong to the chapter. If you are a member of the NQA, please e-mail Jeri Fickes (fickes@sssnet.com) or call her (330-201-0932) with your NQA membership number so she can complete the chapter application. Thank you.

NEW MEMBER

Please welcome Ellen Horst. 1639 Oakwood Court, Wooster, OH 44691

330-262-3361, birthday: April 18

Mary Lou posted lots of pictures from our December party. Check them out if you have not already.

TCQ SPRING RETREAT

You may not believe that kit is coming, but Spring will soon be here and with it….the TCQ Retreat! What a wonderful time has been planned with great instructors and tons of fun! Even if you cannot sew all weekend, plan to attend the trunk show and lecture with Janet Andrews Saturday, April 6 at 7:00. You could also come for dinner! The lecture and trunk show is free for Tree City Quilters. Take advantage of this opportunity and have some fun at the same time.

Sandy Hook Pillowcase Project

It was agreed at the January meeting that we would make pillowcases to donate to local children who are in need in the memory/honor of the students from Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Ct. Janet McFarland and Jeri Fickes will be leading a workshop/workday in the near future to make as many pillowcases as possible, with an ultimate goal of 500. We can do this! Many hands make light work! That being said,
we will need as many hands as possible (and fabric donations—Jeri has a friend at work who would like to donate money to buy fabric--I'm sure we can get other financial donations as well, in addition to digging into our own stash). We will need people to cut, pin, sew, turn tubes (you'll see what this is) and iron. More information will be coming!

TIP OF THE MONTH:

  • Do you ever get confused with multiple sizes and fabrics to cut? Before you start, transfer all your cutting directions for each fabric, onto a dry erase board. Prop the board near you. As you cut each fabric and each size/piece, erase the board. Confusion eliminated!

  • Do you have a tangled mess every time you want to use your safety pins for basting? Store your pins on long, knitting, stitch holders…available in many sizes in knitting department. These holders resemble safety pins and will hold your pins open and ready to use in a neat, orderly manner!

MEMBERSHIP BOOKLETS/CORRECTIONS

  • Oops! Under Quilter of the Year….the list should read: 2004 Dorothy Pearson, 2005 NO NAME, 2006 Mary Lou Nuzum. Please make these corrections in your book.
  • Attached is a copy of the 2013 Committee list. Please copy the page, cut it in half if needed, and glue it on top of the current blank Committee page in your booklet.

QUILTS OF VALOR

Hi. I'm the State Coordinator for the Quilts of Valor Foundation in Ohio. Quilts of Valor's mission is to cover ALL combat service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. This foundation is not about politics; it's about people. We get requests for quilts in three ways:

1. Requests made on our website for individuals. These are usually requested by family members.
2. Small group requests. Right now QOVF Ohio is working on supplying 25 quilts for a veteran's retreat in the spring in Dayton.
3. Standing requests for quilts to go to Germany and Afghanistan. They request hundreds of quilts a month for injured service people and we aren't able to fill all the need.

There are several ways that your guild could help.

1. Let members know about the group so they can donate quilts if they are interested. If they just want to make the tops, we have volunteer long arm quilters who will quilt the tops. Some guilds have sewing days to make tops.
2. Have a block donation at a meeting. Everyone can donate a block to be made into quilt tops. You can sew the tops together or just send the blocks to me.
3. We accept donations of fabrics especially in red, white, and blue.

These quilts are greatly appreciated by the service members and veterans who receive them. They are touched that someone cared enough about them and their sacrifices to make them a quilt.
For more information about Quilts of Valor, including the specifications for the quilts please visit http://www.qovf.org.

Quilts of Valor Ohio has a new page at https://www.facebook.com/QuiltsOfValorOhio. I am also happy to answer any questions that you may have. Thank you for helping me spread the word about Quilts of Valor, Heather Raynack, State Coordinator; Quilts of Valor OH

Tree City Quilters Guild Meeting Minutes January 14, 2013

Meeting was called to order by Pres. Jim Rawdon.

Guests attending were Andrea Todor and Janie Terwilliger.

The committee sign up sheet for 2013 has been misplaced and a new sign up sheet was circulated. All members were encouraged to participate in a committee.

At the December meeting we missed taking up a collection to give to the Church for use of the facility in addition to what we pay them yearly. A basket was passed around for that donation.

Membership booklets are available tonight.

Treasurer reported a balance of $5133.63.

Secretary reported two corrections to last months’ minutes. Lois Moreland won the tree squares and Wilma McCurdy won second place in the snowflake challenge.

Jim read a card from Janet McFarland thanking the guild for selecting her as Quilter of the Year for 2012.

New Business:

Retreat – still spaces available. Everyone encouraged to attend the trunk show on Sat eve Apr 6th at 7-8:30 even if you don’t attend the retreat. Also the evening dinner is available at a cost of $10. Patterns and supply lists for those attending the retreat will be available at the Feb. meeting.

Jeri Fickes spoke to us about a project she wanted to do for the school children affected by the shootings at Sandy Hook schools in Connecticut. After getting in touch with the school she found they do not have a need and was asked that we go forward with the project and make a presentation to local children in honor of the children at Sandy Hook. After discussion we decided to make pillow cases for local agencies. Jeri & Janet will come up with a plan and possible work day.

Jeri also asked if the guild would like to become a member of NQA (National Quilters Association). Benefits include: access to insurance coverage for our quilt show, ribbons at a lower cost, Quilting quarterly magazine and free advertisement for our quilt show, retreats etc. Cost is $45 for two years. Jeri made a motion that we join NQA, Laura Noletti seconded the motion – motion passed.

Sign up sheet was circulated during the meeting for our next quilt show committee. Laura Noletti is the chair person. She announced that the first committee meeting will be January 28th at 7PM at the Wayne County Library.

Program was presented by Barb Byler. She told us about a pizza box challenge. Those participating will made a 12 ½” center medallion quilt square. She showed samples of what that might be and what to include in the pizza box. The challenge lasts until July. Each month your box will be passed on to another member and a border added to your block. You will end up with your own block at the end. More information and instruction sheets will be available at the next meeting.

Meeting: January 14, 2013, 7:00 PM

Parkview Christian Church

1912 Burbank Road

MEETING: Medallion Quilts

Barb Byler will present a program “centered” on medallion quilts! (Sorry, that was a bad pun but I couldn’t resist!) For those of you that didn’t catch the pun….come and learn about this traditional quilt pattern. We will also be introducing a “pizza box” project for the first part of our new year. Hope to see everyone there!

FROM THE PRESIDENT….

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a great New Years. Did anyone get anything neat like a new machine? I am sure there were a lot of resolutions made to use all of your stash, finish UFO's, get organized etc. I hope you are successful in your tasks. The Board had our first meeting at Cassy's house and discussed the coming year. I think that we have an interesting year ahead of us. It was brought to my attention that we did not take a collection to give the church at the Christmas party so we will do that at the January meeting. We have a new committee that is forming that should interest a number of you. See you at the meeting.

Mary Lou posted lots of pictures from our December party. Check them out if you have not already.

TIP OF THE MONTH:

Happy New Year! It is time to refresh your sewing area/room/studio and begin with a clean slate. First; change the needle in your machine. Second; change your rotary blade. Third; arrange to get your scissors sharpened. Fourth; just clean up from all that sewing you did in December! Last….sit down and consider what it is you would like to accomplish in 2013. Are there some UFO’s that could be finished? Do you have a new technique or pattern that you would like to try? Have you ever tried embellishing a quilt with beads? Would you like to introduce a color you never use into your palette? Consider events that may occur in this coming year and plan ahead. I like to give my self most of a day just to “tinker” in my studio; cleaning, planning, and dreaming. It is very satisfying. I hope you give yourself a gift of time….and clean up!

MEMBERSHIP BOOKLETS

The 2013 Membership Booklets will be available at the January meeting. There are about 12 members that have not paid dues for 2013. If you are planning on remaining a member, please contact Naomi Lance immediately. (if not sooner) Your name and contact information will not be in the new booklet unless Lola tells that committee that you have renewed.

JANUARY REFRESHMENTS

Sally Kitchen and Shirley Rodgers will be providing the refreshments in January. We usually have 3 people…anyone interested in helping, please contact Sally and Shirley.

KITCHEN KORNER

RITA'S FAVORITE VEGETABLE SOUP [read through before making]

(pre-heat oven to 425* and leave jellyroll pan in oven as it heats)

2-3 large carrots, scrubbed and chunked

2 large onions, peeled and chunked

1 large sweet potato, scrubbed

1 small bag (maybe 2-3 cups) frozen Italian green beans, thawed

8oz fresh mushrooms, clean

2-3 ribs of celery, cleaned and chunked

(I don't like to peel my veggies. First, I'm lazy. Second, fiber and vitamins hang out in the skin. Alsew, use any veggie you like!)

1) I plop my sweet potato in my fabric potato-baker bag and microwave on high for

3-4 minutes. It doesn't need to be completely cooked through, just softened.

2) In large bowl toss all the remaining chunked veggies in about 3-4 tablespoons of olive oil. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and spread evenly across the (now hot!)

jelly roll pan. Roast these veggies for 10 minutes. Turn with spatula, then roast

for another 10 minutes, or until veggies are just beginning to brown.

meanwhile......

In large stock pot heat:

1 box chicken or beef stock

ANY (or no) meat of your choice, cooked [browned ground beef, chopped cooked

chicken (rotisserie is great!), shredded cooked beef]

1 large can stewed tomatoes

1 small head cabbage, chunked

Simmer the contents of the stock pot for 30 minutes, or until cabbage is very tender. Remove roasted veggies from oven and add to stock pot. Continue to simmer for as long as you are busy with something else. Anytime before serving (hours or minutes) use an immersion blender and blend up all the veggies in the soup. They don't need to be pureed, just broken down. This thickens the soup nicely. If you don't have a blender, use a potato masher. If you don't want to smash anything smaller, that's fine, too! Serve with crisp tossed salad and crusty, hearty bread.

This soup is super-easy to make! I use whatever I have on hand and no peeling, slicing, or dicing is required. Plus, the flavor of the roasted veggies is outstanding!

IRISH SODA BREAD

[I have a lovely bread maker, but I like to use it to mix and raise my dough, then I bake the loaf in my stonewear bread pan. This way it gets a lovely crust!]

1 1/4 cups buttermilk (I use powdered ~ 5T + 1 1/4 cups water)

2 C whole wheat flour

1 cup white flour

1 1/2 tsp salt

2 T butter

2 T molasses

1 tsp baking soda

1 T active dry yeast

Place all ingredients in breadmaker pan. Select dough setting and press start. After bread has risen remove (remember to remove the mixing blade!!) and place in greased bread pan. Bake in pre-heated oven at 375* for 35-40 minutes. Allow to cool a bit before cutting.

It’s that time of year!  Please sign up for a committee.  December is your last opportunity before the new booklets come out.

KITCHEN KORNER
MY FAMILY'S FAVORITE HOLIDAY CABBAGE (Rita Fishel)
1 head of cabbage, cored and chopped
2 onions, coarsely chopped
2 Granny Smith apples, coarsely chopped (I don't peel, just core)
As you are preparing to remove your turkey from the oven to let is rest before carving, fill a stock pot with about 2" of water.  Salt generously!  Bring to a boil, add cabbage, onions and apples.  Stir well. Turn heat to simmer and cover with a tight lid.  Let the veggie/fruit combo steam for about 7-10 minutes.  When this mixture is wilted to 'al dente', drain off water leaving veggies/fruit in the large pan.  With large turkey baster siphon off 2-3 baster-fulls of turkey drippings directly from the roaster before making the gravy and squirt this on the cabbage.  Toss cabbage mixture in these drippings and keep hot until serving.  Ummmmmm.  This is one of those traditional side dishes that we cannot ever forget when we serve turkey.
APPLE AND SWEET POTATO BAKE
3 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and halved
1 T. lemon juice
2 sweet potatoes, peeled, halved lengthwise and sliced as thin as possible
1/4 cup apple cider
1/4 cup melted butter
Slice apples as thin as possible and toss w/ lemon juice. Reserve the nicest slices of apple and potato and layer the remaining slices in a greased 1 1/2 qt baking dish. Arrange reserved slices of apple and potato on top in a pinwheel design. Pour apple cider over slices and drizzle w/ half the melted butter. Bake, covered, 350* for 1 hr. Brush w/ remaining butter and bake, uncovered for 15 min.
PUMPKIN DIP
Mix together:
    8oz cream cheese
    2C powdered sugar
Add:
 15oz pureed pumpkin
 1T cinnamon
 1T pumpkin pie spice
 1tsp frozen orange concentrate
Refrigerate at least 1 hour before serving. Serve with apple wedges or ginger snaps!

QUILT SHOW
We seem to follow each other on Pinterest and Facebook, and I just wanted to send you some information on our United Quilt Guild 2013 Show in July of 2013.  I was told that you belong to Tree City Quilters, and I am hoping you will share this information with your group.  Our show has grown considerably and last year we had close to 1000 attendees.  We have sponsors for each of our categories which help provide nice monetary prizes.  So there is not only UQG prize money, but an additional amount from our sponsors!

I am contacting as many guilds as possible to let them know personally of our show!  If you want to pass on our information to other guilds too, we'd really appreciate it!

For your convenience, I've attached a flyer telling about our show, and our registration form which is 2 pages.  I've additionally attached our advertising form - in case your guild has a show you'd like to advertise in our brochure - or for quilters who would like to advertise their business.  Bobbi Brady, Publicity Chair, UQG 2013 Quilt Show
