Definitions

Bed Quilt: a quilt that is made to go on any sized bed, twin, full, queen or king.

Wall hanging: a quilt made hang on a wall, not to include a quilt that can be considered a miniature.

Appliqué/Mixed Techniques: either appliqué predominates over other techniques in amount or effect. Mixed Techniques will have multiple techniques, not including quilting, to complete the quilt.

Pictorial: a quilt that represents a recognizable image of a person, place or thing.

Art/Innovative Quilt: Your original design reflecting innovative construction and design techniques, theme or subject matter, and/or materials. No commercial patterns or copies of previous works. Quilts must be made of fabric, have three layers and contain quilting, a quilt based on traditional patterns and design should be entered in another category.

Naturescape: quilts that reflect the scenery found in nature, such as land, mountains, ocean, forearm gardens and deserts. Animals and humans may be included but should not be the focal point of the piece.

Baby Quilt/Juvenile: obviously made for a baby, small child, nursery wall hanging or for a juvenile.

Kits/Block of the Month: A quilt of any size where the pattern and fabrics have been selected for you.

Paper Pieced: Quilts that are predominately paper pieced should be placed in this category rather than the bed quilt or wall hanging categories.

Miniature Quilt: miniature to scale if a large quilt design; maximum size 24” x 24” or 96” perimeter. All parts of the quilt should be in proportion, including appliqué, piecing, fabric prints, borders, and quilting.

Garment: wearable such as a jacket, vest or ensemble, must have quilting or patchwork

Totes/Purses: must have quilting or patchwork

Home Dec: table runners, placemats, pot holders, Christmas stocking, Christmas tree skirts, pillows, door banners, must have some patchwork or quilting.

Handwork--any "small project" made completely by hand other than quilts. May include: counted cross stitch, rug hooking, needle felting, ribbon work, crewel, embroidery, tatting, etc..."

Progressive Block-Round Robin—Quilts completed by those participating in the Progressive Block Exchange program in 2015-2016.

Challenges:

Modern Challenge: Per the modern quilt guild, “modern quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design.” Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt. These include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints; high contrast and graphic areas of solid color; improvisational piecing; minimalism; expansive negative space; and alternate grid work” (quilting patterns). For the show, everyone is
encouraged to try something different. Entries will not be disqualified if attempts are made to try something different that could be considered modern. This is more for fun than to have to adhere to strict rules. Have fun with it!

Scarlet and Gray Challenge—Two Categories
Rules: project must be greater than or equal to 50% red and gray; you can only use black and white as the other colors in the quilt.
o Quilt/wall hanging-greater than or equal to 240 inches perimeter
o Other-accessory, clothing or small wall hanging, less than 240 inches perimeter

  • The committee would like all of the quilts to have a “Quilt Story” card completed and attached to the front, right side of the quilt.  Please attach the card with a safety pin for security and so that the committee may be able to move the card if necessary for better visibility. These cards will be available at the September meeting as well as at the drop off point for the show.  It is recommended that you complete the card and have it attached prior to checking in your quilt on Wednesday evening.
