TIPS AND TRICKS

Don’t forget to clean your bobbin case after a session of sewing….or right now for the New Year!  All that fuzz causes a lot of problems for your machines…even broken threads and needles.

Lackman’s Sewing Center gives a discount for cash purchases!

Looking for a new machine?  Jeri has a girlfriend selling 2 machines.  Please see Jeri for details.

Hang of collect the tools/equipment/supplies near where they are used.  For instance, have your pressing cloth, applique pressing sheet, water, iron, and board all together.  Have all your cutters, blades, matts, rulers, scissors, etc. stored together.  Arrange your sewing room in zones for sewing, cutting, pressing, and storage.

PHD Challenge

Introduced by Jeri, your PHD Completion Program registration is due at the February meeting.  If you need more room, type your PHD’s on a separate sheet of paper.  If you were not at the January meeting, please contact Jeri for a copy of the program.

Your “tuition” is one-half yard of quilt shop-quality fabric.

WORKSHOPS

Friday, February 7:    Handwork.  This workshop meets the first Friday of each month from 9-12, at Parkview.  Bring your own work and a snack to share.  The first 15 minutes will be demos.

Saturday, February 22: Getaway Bag with Kim Panter.  The pattern is available on pursepatterns.com and is by Aunties Two.  Also available from wingspancreafts.com and other sites.  Remember there are some specific products for you to use so get your pattern and check the supply list.

We have all been asked to submit ideas for workshops to Jim and Sally.  No dates have been set but they suggested the Sewing and Quilting Expo, the NQA Show, the Amish Shop Hop, and a trip to Charm.

KITCHEN KORNER

I was served the following recipe by a friend and her husband and found it to be delicious.  This was a traditional meal for their family growing up…and you cannot serve one without the other.  They are a set!

White Bean Soup

Cover Great Northern Beans with water and cook uncovered for 1 hour.  Rinse with cold water and cover just enough to cook again.  Cook uncovered until the beans are done.  This could be 2-3 hours.  Add more water as needed.  OR, you can choose to soak the beans overnight, add more water and begin to cook until done.  When the beans are as soft as YOU want them for a soup, add 1 tablespoon of butter, some salt, and either cream or ½ & 1/2.  Start with about 1 coup and add until the soup is the way you want it.  You could also add more water.  In place of the cream, you can also use Coffee Rich or creamer or regular milk.  Either is good but the milk does not like to boil so be careful.  You can also add more butter if you like.

Serve with a sprinkle of Allspice on top – this is a MUST!  I was amazed that soup that only has 4 ingredients would be so tasty but it is!  Try it in this cold weather.

Dried Apple Pie Pockets – to be served alongside the bean soup

3 heaping cups of dried apples – let soak overnight of cover with water and cook until tender.

Add: ½ cup sugar – taste for sweetness and adjust for yourself

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 Tablespoon flour

Cool and fill 5” diameter circles of pie dough.  Fold over, flute edges.  The recipe makes about 10-14 pockets…always food in a lunch for the next few days.

Bake at 425 until golden

Pie Crust (one of the flakiest recipes I have found)

4 coups flour

½ teaspoon salt

1 1/3 cups shortening (I use Crisco)

Blend well, add approximately 8 tablespoon of COLD water.  Roll out.

**True Confessions: I can my own apple pie filling so instead of dried apples pie pockets, I made m,y own apple pie filling pockets.  Just as long as you make some sort of apple pie pocket to serve with the soup!

NEORQC

The first meeting of NEORQC will be Saturday, March 1 at 10:00 am.  The meeting will be hosted by the Western Reserve Quilters Anonymous at the Brecksville United Church of Christ.  Mystery Quilts will be revealed, Show’n Tell, pot luck lunch, conversation and laughter.  They are also collecting pillowcases for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (pillowcases must be washed and individually bagged in gallon size bags.  Anyone of us is welcome, and encouraged, to attend.  Please check the website for details and directions!

TIPS AND TRICKS

How long has it been since you replaced your pins?  Pins get bent and dull from use.  And, there are so many different types to consider…flat head pins, extra-long, tiny applique, extra fine….using the best equipment and keeping that equipment at its best is one way to ensure good result.

It’s also time to check your needle supply.  Set aside your used, dull needles for sewing on paper.  While there are good sales going on, go out and purchase new needles for your projects.  Consider trying the needles for sewing metallic threads and trying some new quilting.

In my sewing room, it is time for a through vacuuming.  I got to the point on Christmas Eve that I was just tossing the threads I was snipping off onto the floor!  Forget the thread catchers I have hanging everywhere!  I find it very relaxing and cleansing to give my space a thorough cleaning right now.  I have just got to be ready for whatever new projects this year will bring.  I also find it very helpful to inventory my basic supplies; threads, batting, stabilizers, blades, etc.  I keep a running list so I am ready whenever I happen to walk into a store.  It also helps my husband have a point of reference for gifts!

KITCHEN KORNER

Black-Eyed Pea Salsa

3, 15-oz cans black-eyed peas, drained and rinsed

3 celery stalks, finely diced

3 green onions, thinly sliced

1 red bell pepper, seeded and finely diced

1 cucumber, peeled, seeded, and finely diced

1 jalapeno, seeded and chopped

1 cup chopped cilantro

Salt to taste

Juice of 1 lime

Tortilla chips

Add the black-eyed peas to a large bowl.  Add the celery, green onion, red bell pepper, cucumber, jalapeno, cilantro and salt.  Squeeze in the lime and stir it around until all combined.  Cover and chill until ready to serve.  Serve with tortilla chips.  YUMMY!  And, black-eyed peas are “good luck” for the New Year!

Hoppin’ John (another traditional southern New Year’s tradition)

4 cups dried black-eyed peas

4 tablespoons (1/2stick butter

1 large onion, diced

4 garlic cloves, minced

1 green pepper, seeded and diced

1 red pepper, seeded and diced

1 orange or yellow pepper, seeded and diced

2 celery stalks, diced

Salt and pepper to taste

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

5 cups chicken broth

1 or 2 ham hocks (or 2 cups diced ham)

2 tablespoons white vinegar

Cooked white or brown rice

Soak the balck0eyed peas in cool water for 4 to 6 hours; drain and rinse.  In a large pot, melt the butter and add the onion, garlic, bell peppers, and celery.  Stir and add the black-eyed peas along with the salt, pepper, cayenne and chicken broth.  Add the ham hocks or ham.  Bring the mixture to a boil, cover the pot, reduce the heat and simmer for 1 hour.  Check for consistency.  If it’s still to soupy, cook an additional 15 minutes with the lid off.  Too dry, then add more broth.  Stir in the vinegar and taste for seasoning.  Serve over the cooked rice alongside your favorite cornbread recipe!

QUILTING AND SEWING TV SHOWS

Two of my favorite shows are on Saturday mornings!  Of course, you can always watch them on the computer, or DVR them if you are able.  I pick up a lot of technique and tips from these ladies!  They make me want to sew my very best.  Other shows are available online at all times.

Sewing with Nancy; Saturday mornings at 8:30 AM, WVIZ channel 9
