JULY MEETING; TCQ Annual Picnic
It’s time for our annual picnic!  As in other years, we will have a pot luck.  Ice Tea will be provided but we all need to bring our own table service and water.  We have been asked to wear something floral, bring 5 fat quarters for playing bingo, and don’t forget your challenge piece……something with flowers on it.

As this is Ohio and we seem to be in the middle of the monsoon season, don’t forget raingear, even if we do have a wonderful pavilion to shelter us!  We have fun no matter the weather so see you there!   Note the change of time and location

TIPS AND TRICKS
Ever want to use a variegated thread for quilting but don’t have the right colors?  Some quilters make their own 2 or 3 color combinations!  Thread all the color of threads through the machine and use a large eye needle (embroidery or jeans).  Use the extra spool holders on your machine or place the spools of thread near the back of your machine in mugs and thread the machine in the usual manner.

WORKSHOPS
·         Saturday, June 28: T-shirt quilts with Jim Rawdon from 10 – 3.  There is still room for more to come to this workshop!  Bring a snack to share, your lunch, and a small donation the church for the use of the room.  Any questions, please call Jim or Sally.
·         Friday July 11: Handwork group meets from 9 - 12…..Please note the change of date!  Demo will be rug hooking with Mary Lou

2014 QUILT SHOW
Workshops; We currently have 14 members signed up for the 2 workshops.  These are free classes in exchange for you volunteering hours at the quilt show.  The sign-up sheet and pictures of the quilts will be available at the picnic.  Non-members will be able to sign up for these classes.  $20 for the Magic Square and $30 for Storm at Sea.
****Please fill out your quilt registration form and get it into Dot ASAP.   The committee is anxious to see how many quilts the show might have displayed.
TCQ Boutique will again be available to members during the show.  You can sell sewn/quilt related items with 10% going to TCQ.  Please, no fabric sales as this competes with our vendors.
Sell your raffle tickets!  This is an easy way for each member to help market our show.  As the show has changed where it has been for years, it is very important for everyone to participate.

Janet McFarland has a signup sheet and is looking for volunteers to assist her in selling raffle tickets at the Amish Quilt Show a couple weeks before our own show.  Please see Janet if you can help for a couple hours.

KITCHEN KORNER
CHICKEN PASTA SALAD
16oz macaroni or any short cut pasta
1 cooked rotisserie chicken, picked and chopped;
1/2 red onion, minced
1 English cucumber chopped coarsely
bunch red seedless grapes, halved
1 bunch fresh parsley, stemmed and chopped
1/2 cup sliced almonds
Toss all together and mix with Marzetti's slaw dressing (not reduced fat) if you can find it. If not use Miracle whip thinned a bit with olive oil and vinegar.

Anyone like Kolrabi?  A great vegetable that you can serve hot or cold.  Peel it and slice it for a snack.  Peel and cube it, boil until tender (like a potato) and serve with salt, pepper, and butter….add some cream, too.
Beets and greens….something I’m going to have an abundance of I can tell already!  Personally, I love young beets so I pick mine when they are pretty small.  But I always cook them with the greens.  Boil the beets, slip them out of their skins, cut them up and throw them back into the pot.  Wash the greens and throw them in.  Add just a bit of water and steam the greens for a few minutes.  Add some butter OR, best yet, a bit of bacon fried crisp and the fat.  (can you tell I grew up with southern and German relatives?)
It’s grilling time on our patio and what I am keeping in my refrigerator and freezer right now is pizza dough.  I make it in large batches, portion it out and keep it on hand.  My husband and I love rolling out the dough and cooking it right on the grill rack of our weber.  Put it on, wait less than a minute and the first side is done.  Take it off the grill, flip it over and add your toppings (to the grilled side).  Slide it back onto the grill and in less than 5 minutes you have a GREAT supper!  Use fresh herbs and fresh mozzarella, pesto instead of a red sauce, caramelized Vidalia onions, Yummy!!!  Give it a try and let me know how it works for you.
REFRESHMENT SUPPLIES
Are you aware that the Guild keeps a box of supplies in a cupboard for refreshments?  We have a variety of tea bags, plates, cups, napkins, etc.  We are in need of a volunteer to take a look and refresh this supply BYthe August meeting!  Please contact Jeri if you could help take an inventory, shop and re-stock the box.  There is an amount budgeted for this

Such as: to make a miniature quilt take all the measurements for a queen size and divide each size by 4.  To make a zippered pillow easy use the hotdog technique. Also remember when your life gets hectic to turn to Proverbs 31; the lady mentioned there SEWED, for OTHERS!!!  She also shared an easy “quilting day recipe” take 2-4 frozen chicken breasts, 1 block of cream cheese, 1 can cream of anything soup, and 4 plops of Italian salad dressing, leave the whole thing in the Crockpot all day and serve with angel hair pasta and a salad.

TIPS AND TRICKS
Where do you find inspiration?  In the many magazines devoted to quilting?  Attending quilt shows and classes?  Show-n-tell at the meeting?  An upcoming special event?  In a photo album or garden?  Your friend’s completed projects?  All of these categories are what inspire and motivate me to sew and complete projects.  While it is harder for me to sew during the summer as I am gardening a lot, I still try to work out time to work on my projects.  For me, having some hand projects/hand aspects ready to work on while relaxing on the patio keeps me on track to completing quilts.

What do you do during the summer?

JULY PICNIC
This year’s challenge is “Flower Garden”.   It can be any item but MUST be blooming!  We have also been asked to wear something flowery!  The committee has asked that everyone bring 5 fat quarters for the games.

Let Nancy know ideas for demos during the show.  Please let Dot know a pre-list of how many quilts you might have in the show.  The committee would like an idea of how many quilts we may have.  Please “Like” the quilt show facebook page. We continue to meet and plan.  Are you selling your raffle tickets?  Just a reminder that this is how we support our educational endeavors for the next 2 years. Tuck the tickets in your purse and show the picture to everyone you see!  You will sell them in no time.
