WAYNE COUNTY FAIR DEMONSTRATIONS
Mabel Stocker is organizing volunteers to demonstrate at the Fair. As you know, this is something that Tree City Quilt guild has done for quite a few years and have attracted members through it as well. Won’t you please consider giving a demonstration? It does not have to be anything difficult. Some of us have demonstrated a technique, a new gadget, seasonal ideas, etc. It is totally up to you what is demonstrated. Your demonstration should be about 20 – 30 minutes long…..so don’t think you have to prepare for a 2 hour lecture/demonstration! Much easier than that and positively much more friendly.
Demonstrations will be on Wednesday and Thursday, September 12 and 13 in the afternoon.
***If you are interested, PLEASE contact Mabel at sstock@sssnet.com or 330-345-5986 as soon as possible as she must let the Extension Office know by July 31. This is FUN! Give it a try!
ASSISTANCE NEEDED
Could you help someone with a T-shirt quilt? It may only take a phone call or two. Call Janice Miller for the name and phone number if you can help. 330-262-1166.
ALEX ANDERSON
Do you recognize that name? You should! Alex has hosted “Simply Quilts” for 11 years and is the national spokes person for Bernina sewing machines. Lonestar Quilting, LLC is hosting an event with Alex Anderson on Tuesday, August 21 from 11:30 – 3:00. Tickets are $48.00 and include lunch. The day will include a trunk show, book signing, exhibit and demonstrations. If you are interested, please check with Lonestar Quilting: www.lonestarquilting.net.
QUILT SHOW CHALLENGE
Keep sewing on your portion of the Lincoln Highway mural quilts! This is going to be quite an exciting exhibit!
ATTENDANCE
January 41, February 35, March 34, April 43, May 38,
There were 37 members and no guests at the Picnic. Plus one new member….Heather. Welcome!
CIVIL WAR
Did you know that we are in the Sesquicentennial commemoration of our country's Civil War? That's just a fancy way of saying it's been 150 years since the Civil War. This commemoration will last for 3 years. There are some very beautiful Civil War replica fabrics in the stores. Why not choose to make a quilt and learn about our country’s history at the same time? Visit a battle field, museum, or historic house. Learn something about Ohio’s role in the Civil War. Quilts and quilters played a part in the war whether they were sending quilts with their soldiers, sending quilts to the hospitals, using quilts as signals on the Underground Railroad, and I’m sure in other ways. This is a good time to contemplate our history and make a quilt in remembrance.
KITCHEN KORNER
Recently I attended a family reunion and had the BEST chocolate chip cookie I had ever put in my mouth! It just boggles my mind that this cookie is enjoyed by so many people and has so many recipes. But, I’m telling you…these were the greatest!
CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES
1 CUP white sugar
1 ½ CUP brown sugar
2 CUPS shortening (or 1 cup butter and 1 cup oil-this is what I use)
2 tsp. vanilla
3 eggs
1 tsp. salt
3 tsp. baking soda
5 ½ cups flour
24 oz. chocolate chips
Beat the white sugar, brown sugar and shortening until creamy. Then beat in the vanilla and eggs. Add the salt, baking soda and flour and beat until thoroughly blended.
Use a rounded 1/8 cup scoop of dough – but it all depends on what size cookie you want.
Bake at 375 for 9-12 minutes, depending on your oven and preference (soft vs. crunchy).
HEAVENLY HASH
½ LB. Orzo or Acini De Pepe (rice like pasta)
¾ cup sugar
½ teaspoon salt
1 (15 oz.) can crushed pineapple, drained – save juice
1 T. flour
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1 can mandarin oranges, drained
1 small bottle maraschino cherries, drained
9 oz. cool whip
Cook pasta according to package directions. Remove and drain well. Set aside. Cook sugar, salt and reserved pineapple juice, flour and eggs. Cook until thick – cool. Add cooked pasta and refrigerate until completely cool or overnight. Fold in drained pineapple and mix well. Fold in cool whip. Then fold in maraschino cherries and mandarin oranges. Refrigerate several hours.

The committee will be assisting the judge and hanging the show all day. If you are available, please come help!
