TIPS AND TRICKS
Get your machines serviced regularly!  I clean my bobbin case out but have not had it serviced lately.  I have noticed that I am unable to adjust my thread tensions correctly.  Taking our machines in and having them re-set to the original factory settings is a good thing!

Found this YouTube video and thought you might like it.  It is an inexpensive way to create a large quilting surface for ourselves and get our machines level with the surface, too.  Look up Marguerite McManus and quilting tables.  She shows you how to use an adjustable leg, folding table ($42 at most wholesale clubs) and 2 pieces of the blue foam insulation (probably about @20 at Lowe’s) to form that flat surface around your machine for a quilting bed.  She covers everything with a sheet of clear vinyl to make everything glide smoothly.

Orvus soap, used by textile conservators, is available at our local Tractor Supply.  It’s a great, gentle product for washing a quilt.  Especially if you have decided to wash older quilts.

Are you having trouble removing pencil lines drawn for quilting?  Mix ¼ cup water, ¾ cups rubbing alcohol and a few drops of dish detergent.  With a soft bristle toothbrush, gently rub the lines.  Wash in cold water. As heat sets lead, don’t ever iron over these lines or they will be permanent.

PHD Challenge
Your “tuition” is one-half yard of quilt shop-quality fabric plus the list of projects you are working on this year.  Jeri has extended the “registration” to the March meeting.
Hope you are all busily working on those projects!!  I am finding it great fun to get them done.  The Olympics helped a great deal as I was sewing bindings and applique every evening.

BEADS OF COURAGE
Mary Lou Nuzum introduced us to a program that honors, supports and encourages children that are fighting their way through terrible illnesses.  Anyone that is interested can sew these bags (fat quarter friendly!) and attach the labels.  Check out the web site; www.beadsofcourage.org

WORKSHOPS
Friday, March 7:         Handwork.  This workshop meets the first Friday of each month from 9-12, at Parkview.  Bring your own work and a snack to share.  The first 15 minutes will be demos.

2014 QUILT SHOW
The committee hopes you are sewing your fingers off during this long, snowy and cold winter!  That way all of us will have plenty of projects to enter into the show.  We continue to meet and plan.  At the end of the newsletter is a copy of the show registration form.  You will need to copy the form; 1 form for every project you plan to enter.
Are you selling your raffle tickets?  Just a reminder that this is how we support our educational endeavors for the next 2 years.  Tuck the tickets in your purse and show the picture to everyone you see!  You will sell them in no time.

KITCHEN KORNER
Here is a recipe that is heart healthy and delicious!  Chickpea and sweet red pepper soup with quinoa (keenwa)
½ cup quinoa
2 Tbl olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
1 carrot, copped
2 stalks celery, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 Tbl smoked paprika
Kosher salt and pepper
1 yellow pepper, cut into ½ inch pieces
1 red pepper, cut into ½ inch pieces
2 15 oz. cans low sodium chickpeas, rinsed
2 cups low sodium vegetable broth
2 Tbl red wine vinegar
Chopped fresh parsley for serving
Cook the quinoa according to package directions.
Meanwhile, heat the oil in your soup pot.  Add the onion, carrot, and celery; cook, until soft, about 6 minutes.  Add the garlic, paprika and ½ tsp each salt and pepper and cook, stirring, for 1 minute.  Add the peppers and cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes.
Add the chickpeas, broth and 1 cup water and bring to a boil.  Reduce heat and simmer until the vegetable are tender, 5 to 8 minutes.  Stir in the vinegar and cooked quinoa.  Serve topped with parsley, if desired.

Acorn Squash with Thyme and Honey        (I like to serve this with Salmon or pork tenderloin)
1 medium acorn squash cut into 2 inch pieces
Heat oven to 425.  Place the squash on a rimmed baking sheet and toss with 1 Tbl olive oil.  Scatter with 1 ½ tsp of Thyme and some black pepper.  Roast for 15 minutes.  Turn pieces over and drizzle with 1 Tbl honey.  Roast until the squash is tender; maybe 8 – 10 more minutes.  Delicious!  And, a different way to serve acorn squash

NEORQC
The first meeting of NEORQC will be Saturday, March 1 at 10:00 am.  The meeting will be hosted by the Western Reserve Quilters Anonymous at the Brecksville United Church of Christ.  Mystery Quilts will be revealed, Show’n Tell, pot luck lunch, conversation and laughter.  They are also collecting pillowcases for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (pillowcases must be washed and individually bagged in gallon size bags.  Anyone of us is welcome, and encouraged, to attend.  Please check the website for details and directions!

Meeting was opened by President Jeri Fickes.  February birthdays were recognized.  1 visitor, Darcy Horvat was welcomed.
Communications: Jeri read an article about the Sochi Olympic Quilt story.  If you would like to see the article, go to. http://www.graphicart-news.com/the-olympic-patchwork-quilt-sochi-2014/
Jeri was a judge for the Lake Farm Park Quilt show. This show will be open through late March.
Business Cards for our guild have been made and are available to give prospective members.
Our Facebook page is up and running and any member is welcome to post. Jeri noted that if you want others to see your post you should “like” your own post.
Marylou talked about the “Beads of Courage” program.  This program is for chronically and seriously ill children. There are 3 parts to the project; bead makers, woodworkers and quilters/sewers. What they need from the quilters are small cloth bags.  Marylou has the pattern and labels for anyone who wants it. Also she has volunteered to mail the finished bags to Arizona. These bags take some kind of cord to draw them closed. Jane has a quantity of pearl cotton that she will donate for anyone who needs it.  The pattern is available on the internet and you can order your own labels from the website. Which is http://www.beadsofcourage.org/
Treasurer: Report was given by Jeri as Jolene is still out of town.  Ending balance is $2183.91   Report accepted without objection.
Secretary: There was one correction from last month’s minutes.  The Children’s workshop grant was for $600 not$6600 as was written.  Lola made a motion to approve minutes as corrected. Kim 2nd motion. No objection.
Committees:  Sunshine-none

Children’s Workshop-Jeri Fickes- it will be 3 days and we need 15 volunteers with sewing machines who can help each child.
Retreat- Bonnie Kreuger- ballots were passed around and all present got to vote for what possible classes we would like to see.
We had the PHD (projects half done) show and tell.
Barb Byler had corrections to the membership book.  April meeting is on April 14th. July meeting is July 14th. Dot Anderson’s cell phone # is 330-749-8503. Sally Kitchen’s address is 814 E Highland ave and her phone # is 330-345-5702. Denise Mohler’s email is dmohler@sssnet.com.
Jeri presented our program as there was a miscommunication about the block of the month program.  She talked about “Quilting Supplies You Don’t Get at Fabric Stores”.  2 examples are: get sticky back sandpaper at the hardware and put pieces on the back of rulers to hold them still on your fabric.  Also hair clips work nicely to hold binding in place instead of pins.
