TCQ August 2010 Show

Tree City Quilt Show 2010 was held on August 13 and 14 under the direction of Sally Kitchen, Chair. There were over 180 entries by guild members. These included bed quilts, wall hangings, baby quilts, clothing, home dec, carry-alls, art quilts, miniatures and Christmas items. Click on the picture above to see 180 pictures of the show.

August Newsletter

The purpose of this organization shall be to create, stimulate, and maintain an interest in all matters pertaining to the making of quilts and to establish and promote educational endeavors through quilts.

AUGUST MEETING: “Using Technology to Design our Quilts”
Peg Bingham, a noted quilt teacher and designer of northeast Ohio, will present the program Using Technology to Design our Quilts. Peg will show us how Electric Quilt works using the latest fabrics or your stash to design and plan your own quilt. Even if you do not care to use this technology, Peg will have much to share about quilt design, fabric color and values, etc. that will enhance your work. She will show us some start to finish projects and has great ideas that will spark your creativity. This will be an exciting, informative program. Be sure to invite quests to this meeting!

Our very own Sarah Bistline, NEORQC President and quilting “goddess”, entered a quilt - Dragon Fly Dance – into the NQA show this year and received an award!! Congratulations, Sarah!! We’re proud of you.

ITEM FOR DISCUSSION: Hosting a 2011 NEORQC Meeting
As everyone knows (or should be aware..) TCQ is a member of the North East Ohio Regional Quilt Council. Meetings are open to anyone in the guild. Meetings are held quarterly with the location changing each time. Various guilds volunteer to host the meetings …….would you, as a guild, be interested? We would be considering either the March or June meeting in the year 2011. The guild receives $250.00 to assist with the cost. We would be responsible to locate a venue, host a light breakfast, declare some sort of lunch plan be it brown bag, pot luck, or catered and receive around 100 guests to our meeting. The guild will be asked to vote on this subject…so give the idea some thought.

Check it out! This year’s mystery quilt can be found on the website along with the 2010 categories for the quilt show. If there are any suggestions regarding what to post, please see Laura and Mary Lou.

That fabric you bought because it just takes your breathe away every time you see it? Instead of hiding it in your cupboard, shelves, or bin turn it into decorative pillow covers for your bedroom. That way, you can use large pieces and see it every time you walk into your bedroom.

Wednesday, August 11: 4:30 to 7:30 - bring your quilts to Ida Sue. If you can't bring them during that time frame, have a friend bring it for you; or you can bring them to our August meeting, or to Sally Kitchen's home or Jane Richardson's home, as long as you call them first.
(We will be setting up the poles in the gym at Ida Sue that night.)
Thursday, August 12: judging and hanging of the quilts begins at 8:30a.m. with the day ending at 6:00p.m. (Please remember the shifts that you signed up to work and please be on time.)
Friday, August 13: show opens at 10:00 with the first shift starting at 9:15. The day ends at 7:00p.m.
Saturday, August 14: show opens at 10:00 with the first shift starting at 9:30. The show ends at 4:00 and we will strike or break down the show from 4:00 to finish. Quilts may be picked up from about 4:30 to 5:30 from the person in charge of check out. You must show your tickets to get your quilts and you will receive your judging form at that time.

Help is needed to hang the show, assist with judging, and work during the show hours. Admission is $3.00 for EVERYONE, including guild members UNLESS you are working at the show.

Donations have been requested in the form of breakfast and lunch items to feed the volunteers during judging and the days of the show. Please contact Bev Karaiskos if you can help. 330-264-2503 or

Quilt Raffle money was due at the picnic. Please get your money and extra tickets to Mabel Stocker so she knows how many tickets she has to work with during the show.

The Wayne County Fair is fast approaching! Tree City (in the guise of Mabel Stocker) has asked for 2 demonstration times during the week. Each time slot will be one and one half hour long (1 ½). Mabel would like 3, 30 minute demonstrations for each of the time slots. PLEASE consider giving a demonstration at the Fair…it is fun and does not have to be anything complicated. Let Mabel know if you have an idea or know that you would like to volunteer. This is such a great opportunity to promote the guild and the art of quilting.

7 cups vegetable or chicken stock
1 tablespoon butter
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cups Arborio rice, uncooked
1-2 medium zucchinis, julienne with veg. peeler or chopped small
1 red or orange bell pepper, seeded and chopped
¼ cup crumb cheese
1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil leaves, or to taste
Bring vegetable or chicken stock to a boil in a medium stock pot, then reduce heat to a low simmer. Melt butter in a large, heavy bottomed stock pot over medium heat. Stir in onions and cook for 2 minutes, or until softened. Add the rice and cook for another 2 minutes, stirring constantly, until lightly toasted. Gradually ladle in simmering vegetable stock, stirring continuously. Risotto will become "creamy" and slightly sticky, yet still firm in the center, or al dente. When almost finished, stir in the zucchini and red peppers, adding stock as needed and stirring continuously. Stir in basil and cheese just before serving.

6 peach halves (sliced if that is what you prefer!)
1 9 inch pie shell
¾ cup butter or margarine
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1/3 cup flour
1 t vanilla
Peel and slice peaches into the pie shell. Cream butter and add sugar. Add egg and beat well. Mix in flour and vanilla. Mixture will resemble a thick paste. Pour over peaches and bake. 325 for 1 hour.

If you tend to get off to a rough start (your machine tangles and bunches threads) stitch first on a scrap that leads directly into your project. Without much fabric for your machine’s feed dogs to grab onto, the first few stitches can be swallowed into the machine’s throat plate. Work out the kinks before you start piecing blocks by first sewing across a fabric scrap. Begin in the center of the scrap then chain-piece by feeding subsequent pieces under the machine needle without lifting the presser foot. Trim off the starter scrap when you’re done. Repeat the process each time you begin and end a line of stitching.

Minutes July Meeting

Minutes, July 2010

The Tree City quilter's Guild met for a picnic at the Church of God on Akron Road on July 12, 2010. The members brought a dish to pass - and they were all delicious – even though I did not personally taste them all. There was 1 guest - Jim Rawdon - and if I am correct he will be joining our guild.

There were several games played, show and tell, and the paint chip awards. There was a very short business meeting and a review of things to do for the quilt show by Nancy Danby in Sally's absence.
The evening was then over, all went home and will meet
again on August 9, 2010
