MARCH MEETING: Cutting, sewing curves, and making points meet

Mary Lou Nuzum will be presenting our program. Mary Lou will have information on fabric preparation, rotary cutters, mats, scissors, pins, and piecing techniques for four patches, chain piecing, straight seams, strip piecing, triangles, and curves. New or experienced quilter – you may pick up a technique, tip or idea to make your quilting more accurate and fun!

Everything old is new again!

Do you have a quilt project that has been put away for awhile? Did you run up against a problem with it? Bring it in to the meeting! We would love to make suggestions and help you solve any problems.

NEORQC MEETING

TCQ is hosting the March 5th meeting. Don’t forget your goodies if you signed up to bring any. Can’t remember if you volunteered to work where? Please call Sarah Bistline and ask! Lunch is a pot-luck. We will provide the tables and beverages.

Please be sure to attend when you can to expand your quilting skills and enjoy the fellowship of other quilters. Payment for workshops, demos, and trips will be requited at the time of sign up. March 19: Saturday (also National Quilting Day) 9a.m. – 2 p.m. Expandable Bag, by

Dorothy Pearson. Using pre-quilted material, you will make a bag that can be used for shopping, quilt classes, etc. Cost for the workshop will be $5.00 and you will receive a pattern and instruction. Bring a sack lunch, snack to share, sewing machine and supplies. See Dorothy for a supply list.

June 28; Tuesday, 7 p.m. lecture/demo on designing kaleidoscope quilts by Laura

Nolletti using Paula Nadelstern’s Kaleidoscopes and Quilts and Ricky Tims’ Kool Kaleidoscope Quilts books. Cost is $5.00 Bring a pencil and a notepad. Learn two techniques for making unique kaleidoscope blocks. You will have an opportunity to design your own original kaleidoscope block.

August 2; Tuesday, Quilt Shop Trip to Mount Vernon. Join other quilters for a fun day

visiting three shops in Mount Vernon and lunch too! Cost is $3 for gas plus lunch will be dutch treat. More information will be coming. See Lou Ella Imhoff for details.

September 24; Saturday, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Zippered Screen Tote class by Mary Lou

Cost is $5.00 plus pattern. This will be a fun opportunity to use a novelty print and learn to use screen material in your projects. 9 a.m. set up, class will begin promptly at 9:30. Bring a sack lunch, snack to share, sewing machine and supplies.

October 27; Thursday evening, Christmas gifts; Cost $10.00. Participants will receive

patterns at the workshop. These will be demos, no machines needed. You may bring cutting tools and fabric. More information will be given prior to the workshop. Coasters and hot pads, pillowcases, insulated casserole cover, folded fabric stars-Techniques demonstrated will be sewing, rotary cutting, zippers, and folded fabric.

RANDOM THOUGHT

Why can’t sewers/quilters have the same deal as the cell phone? Purchase the newest, greatest machine; sign a contract and upgrade in 2 years!?

SURPRISE!

It is always so lovely to walk around a quilt show and see an entry from a friend. Vicky Hartzler entered a beautiful braided quilt in the Lake Farm Park show in Kirtland, Ohio. The quilt has a great location and looks just great!

KITCHEN KORNER

Cheesie Rice Casserole

2 ½ C cooked brown rice

3 green onions, chopped

1 C low fat cottage cheese

1 tsp dill weed

¼ C Parmesan Cheese, grated

½ C low fat milk

In a large bowl, combine all ingredients. Pour into a lightly greased casserole. Bake at 350 for 15 – 20 minutes.

Slow-Cooker Salsa Steak

1 T olive Oil

1 ½ lbs boneless beef top round steak

2 onions, chunked

1 can cream of mushroom soup with garlic

1 C chunky salsa

Trim fat from steak and cut into four serving pieces. Heat oil in large skillet. Brown beef and onion. Place in 4-6 quart slow cooker. In the skillet, combine soup and salsa; mix well with drippings. Pour over steak in crock-pot. Cover and cook on LOW setting for 8-10 hours. 4 servings.

Don’t forget that your best source for information is sitting right next and all around you every month. The guild has YEARS of experience and it is yours for the asking! Don’t suffer through problems in silence….ask! You’ll probably get many more suggestions than you bargained for!

Minutes of February Meeting

Minutes

Call to order by president, Mabel Stocker. She thanked the refreshment committee: Susan Nielson, Danette Ferriman, and Betty Boreman.

If you have additions or corrections to the membership book, please see Jane Richardson. The changes will then be put in the newsletter. Mabel read the Aquarius quilting sign of the zodiac.

Meeting date corrections were made: The March meeting is on 3/14/11, not the 7th; the November meeting is on 11/14/11, not the 7th.

Birthdays were announced by Dorothy Pearson, Sunshine Committee.

Secretary’s report was approved as posted in the newsletter.

The Treasurer’s report was read by Jane Richardson. Money from the retreat was deposited, bringing the total in the treasury to $4,256.34. Some will be spent on the retreat expenses.

Thank you notes from the parents of the first boy and first girl born at Wooster Hospital were read for the baby quilts that had been donated.

Committee Reports:

Raffle quilt committee member Jane Richardson announced that they will be starting to sew on a log cabin Christmas quilt for the raffle next week. They are making great progress.

Quilt Show committee still needs members and a chair.

NOEOQC A sign up to help with the meeting to be hosted here was passed around. Help is needed with morning goodies, the pot luck, greeters and items for raffle baskets, with the proceeds to benefit the guild, people to organize the food and drink. The meeting starts at 10am. On Saturday, March 5. Quilts can be displayed, and there will be show and tell.

Trips and Workshops There will be 2 Saturday and 2 evening workshops and a trip to Mt Vernon for shopping and a meal. All will be listed in the newsletter. The cost will be $5.00 at the time of sign up. The first one is the expandable bag class.

Retreat Committee Jane was available to take registrations during the meeting. Mary Lou Nuzum showed 2 examples of the pattern that is offered in Mary Huey’s class, with very different looks and sizes.

No old business.

New Business Somewhere Sewing is a new fabric shop close to Holmesville and Millersburg. There business cards were available, and they have a web site.

The Amish Country Quilt Show has been cancelled this year. They hope to have it going again next year at the Buckeye Conference center.

The Sewing and Quilting Expo is at the IX Center in Cleveland on March 24 to March 26

The Program was on choosing fabrics and color, by Jerri Fickes and Vicky Hartzler.

FEBRUARY MEETING: Choosing Colors and Patterns

Join Vicky Hartzler and Jeri Fickes as they walk us through the beginning of creating a quilt. Everyone can pick up good tips from these two ladies!

Do you have a quilt project that has been put away for awhile? Did you run up against a problem with it? Bring it in to the meeting! We would love to make suggestions and help you solve any problems.

NEORQC MEETING

TCQ is hosting the March 5th meeting. During the morning registration period, baked goodies will be needed along with coffee. Lunch will be a pot-luck. We will provide the tables and beverages. We will also put together door prizes and raffle baskets.

Sign up sheets will be going around at the meeting for members to help with registration, baked goodies, setting out the luncheon items, and cleaning up. For the door prizes and raffle baskets, if anyone has “like new” books or other items that could be used, please bring them with you to the meeting.

There is still room to register for classes being held at Joliff’s barn Friday evening February 11 and Saturday, February 12.

Classes will be held at Jolliff's Barn, 760 E Hutton Road, Wooster. Barry’s cell number is 330-465-2297. Call if you have questions or if you have questions about the weather the day of the events. Call for directions if needed.

Friday classes will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Saturday classes will begin at 8:30, with set-up time starting at 8:00.

KITCHEN KORNER

CORN AND RED PEPPER CHOWDER

1lb sweet Italian sausage

1 onion, chopped

4 cloves garlic, minced

3 ribs celery, chopped

3 Yukon Gold potatoes

1 sweet potato

2 cups frozen corn

1 can black beans, rinsed and drained

1 red pepper, roasted and chunked (I used jarred)

6 cups chicken or beef stock (or both)

In large Dutch Oven sauté chopped Italian sausage, onions, garlic, celery in olive oil until the veggies begin to brown. Meanwhile, in microwave bake potatoes until almost done ~ maybe 7-10 min. (I scrub my potatoes well, but don’t peel ~ too lazy!). Chunk the potatoes and add to sautéing veggies and sausage. Add broth and simmer for an hour or sew. I like to run through the soup with an immersion blender to thicken soup and break down veggies. If you do that, try to let the sausage settle to the bottom of the pan and don’t blend it. [If you do, it doesn’t hurt, it’s just that you lose the chunks of meat.] Add the corn and beans and continue to heat through or simmer, stirring occasionally, until dinner. I serve it with sour cream and shredded Parmesan cheese.

THREE-GRAIN BREAD ~ I made the dough in my bread maker, then baked it on a baking stone. It’s not a “bread maker” recipe, but it was awesome! I just checked the dough as it mixed and added flour to get the right feel to the dough.

1 cup whole wheat flour

1 cup all-purpose flour

2 T yeast

1 cup buttermilk (I used instant and mix it with very warm water)

2 T honey

2 T olive oil

2/3 cup oats

1/3 cup cornmeal

(I add about 1/4 cup each flax seed, and wheat germ)

1 tsp salt

Add all to breadmaker and process as for dough. Watch and add more all-purpose flour if needed. I think I added about 1/2 - 1 cup more. After bread machine beeps, take dough out and form it into 8-10 inch loaf. Place on baking pan coated with corn meal. Place in warm spot and allow to rise one more hour. Bake at 375* for 30-40 min.

*If you are not using breadmaker, after dough is mixed, knead 8-10 min on floured board until dough is smooth and elastic. Place in greased bowl turning to coat dough. Cover and let rise 1 hour. Punch down, form into 8-10 inch loaf and continue as above.

WARM BROWNIE PUDDING

1 cup flour

3/4 cup sugar

2 T cocoa

2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 cup milk

2 T oil

1 tsp vanilla

3/4 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

3/4 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup cocoa

1 3/4 cups hot water

In mixing bowl with electric beater mix first 8 ingredients until smooth. Stir in nuts and pour into greased 1 1/2 qt casserole bowl. Combine remaining ingredients and pour over batter. Bake at 350* for 45 min. Serves 8. Top with whipped cream. Ahhhhhh……

TIP OF THE MONTH

Lose weight Quilting: Cardio Pressing: If you have a basement (or live in a two-story
house) move your ironing board to a different floor than the one where you
sew, Each time you need to press patchwork or prepare an appliqué,
climb up or down the stairs. You'll get your leg-lifting exercise on
your way to the iron or back. If your house is all on one story,
locate the ironing board and sewing machine as far apart as possible.

Minutes of January Meeting

Minutes

Call to order by president, Mabel Stocker. She thanked the refreshment committee members, Sally Kitchen, Ruth Bishop and Donna Williams. Tanya Wellert was thanked for completing the membership booklets. If there are any changes or corrections, let Jane Richardson know in writing. A guest, Carolyn Curtis was introduced. January birthdays were announced.

Business: Vicky Hartzler, secretary, read the minutes of the December meeting. Jane Richardson, treasurer announced the balance of $2,431.34. Any members who hadn’t paid were encouraged to do so.

Committee Reports:

A committee has been formed to complete the raffle quilt for the 2012 quilt show. Members are Betty Boreman, Jane Richardson, Bev Haven, Gwen Hoover, Janet McFarland, and Barb Nemuth. Mabel is looking for a chair for the quilt show committee. Let her know if you would do it.

Retreat committee, Janice Miller, announced that the retreat is now open to non-members starting today. There are openings in both classes. The pattern is available for Nelly’s class and instructions are available for the one you sign up for.

Sarah Biseline announced that we will be hosting the Saturday NEROC meeting in March from 10 to 1pm. We furnish coffee and danish, door prizes, and raffle baskets if we want to sell tickets. We provide a pot luck lunch, and the participants pay for it. Please contact Sarah if you would like to help with this.

Mary Lou Nuzum discussed the trips and workshops committee. There will be 3 workshops and one trip. These will be offered at different times. Mary Lou passed out slips with ideas to vote for your choices.

Motto Mabel discussed this year's motto "Everything old is new again" The idea is to pull out UFO's and projects that were put away and bring them in to show the group for ideas and input about finishing. This could provide the encouragement needed to finish projects.

Meet the Members Members were asked to introduce them selves and to tell things about them. This will be completed next month.

JANUARY: “Everything Old is New Again!”

Everything Old is New Again is Mabel’s motto for 2011. Mabel will be explaining what that means and introducing the programs for the year. TCQ has had many new members in the past few years and many of us are not acquainted with each other. Mabel would like each of us to introduce ourselves and tell where they lived when they grew up, a little about their family, hobbies, and your favorite part about making a quilt. Please limit your presentation to 2 minutes or less.

TCQ RETREAT

April 29, 30 and May 1; Tree City Quilter’s first weekend retreat at the Hilton Garden Inn. Quilters may arrive on Friday at 4:00 pm in time to set up before dinner at 5:30. Class will be from 7 – 9 pm on Friday, 8 am to 12 pm and 1 – 4 pm on Saturday and 9 – noon on Sunday. Classes, lecture and all meals are included in the registration fee. The cost for the weekend is $150.00 for TCQ members. Quilters who want to stay overnight at the Hilton should make their reservation directly with the Garden Inn; 330-202-7701. Saturday evening from 7 – 8:30 pm there will be a quilt lecture by Mary Huey entitled Adapting Patterns. The lecture is free to all TCQ members.

MONTHLY MEETINGS

Meetings in 2011 will begin promptly at 7:00. Refreshments will be served at the end of the meetings. We have been asked to keep refreshments simple; perhaps 2 items such as veggies or fruit plus a cookie or cake plus beverage. The group is getting large and most of us really don’t need the extra calories. There will be a “free” table plus show & tell at each meeting.

2011: HAPPY NEW YEAR!

It is January….whew! Every year I try to get through December gift making without my sewing room looking like a tornado has blown through and fail miserably! So, first thing I am going to do for myself in this new year is clean up. I will fold and put away all pattern pieces, bits of fabric and trims, put thread on the holder along with bobbins, gather all my tools and put them away, collect pins and get them away, etc! I will also evaluate the projects that are not completed, projects that I wish to begin versus what is happening in my family during the coming year (any babies, graduations, weddings, etc.) and begin formulating my plans. Each year I put things in a sequential “order of sewing.” It helps me get things done and helps me track UFO’s. I will also write a list of sewing supplies I need to purchase such as needles, thread, and rotary blades. Finally, I will take my machine apart and give it a thorough cleaning, change the needle, and wind tons of bobbins. Good sewing to you in the new year!

Start each day sewing in a clean and organized environment. It keeps your mind as uncluttered as your sewing room and you will be more productive when you have the time to sew.
