Our speaker for the evening will be Dr. Virginia Gunn, Professor of Textiles at the University of Akron and Curator of Textiles at the Wayne County Historical Society. Many of you will remember Dr. Gunn’s previous visits to our meetings and how very interesting and informative her talks always are! Virginia has also helped at our quilt shows through the years. Bring a friend to the meeting and enjoy listening to a fellow Wooster native with so much information that is interesting to us in our pursuit of quilting. I guarantee you will learn something and have a good time doing it!

CHRISTMAS PARTY

December 12 please plan on joining the guild at our annual Christmas party. Sally shared this year’s challenge with us at the picnic. Sew anything with a tree in it. For our gift exchange, we are to wrap a shoe box that has been filled with “stuff” : one item for every letter of the word C H R I S T M A S. 1. at least 1 item must be purchased, 2. all items must be related to Christmas, and 3. all should be related to quilting in some way! Wow! What a neat idea!

Akron is the only Midwest venue for this stunning exhibition featuring 19 contemporary quilts, 12 kaleidoscope quilt blocks by Nadelstern, and e4arly 19th century star pattern quilt, contemporary kaleidoscopes and two rare early kaleidoscopes. June 18 – October 2, 2011. Plan to visit!

September 24; Saturday, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Zippered Screen Tote class by Mary Lou

Cost is $5.00 plus pattern. This will be a fun opportunity to use a novelty print and learn to use screen material in your projects. 9 a.m. set up, class will begin promptly at 9:30. Bring a sack lunch, snack to share, sewing machine and supplies.

October 27; Thursday evening, Christmas gifts; Cost $10.00. Participants will receive

patterns at the workshop. These will be demos, no machines needed. You may bring cutting tools and fabric. More information will be given prior to the workshop. Coasters and hot pads, pillowcases, insulated casserole cover, folded fabric stars-Techniques demonstrated will be sewing, rotary cutting, zippers, and folded fabric.

TIP OF THE MONTH

Changing the needle and cleaning your machine frequently makes a huge difference in stitch quality. Wind 4 or 5 bobbins at once, clean your machine and put in a new needle. Begin sewing; when the bobbins run out, it’s time to do it all again.

Once you’ve finished a project, cut leftover fabric into uniform pieces, such as 3” squares or 2” wide strips. When you’re ready to cut our a scrappy quilt, you’ll have a head start!

KITCHEN CORNER: just in time for all the tomatoes coming in your gardens!

Grilled bread salad with basil and cherry tomatoes

1 medium loaf rustic white bread, cut into 1” slices

½ cup extra virgin olive oil

Kosher salt

1 clove garlic, halved lengthwise

1 bunch scallions, trimmed and thinly sliced

12 large fresh basil leaves torn into small pieces

¼ cup red wine vinegar

8 oz. fresh mozzarella…the small little “pearls” or bocconcini



Prepare a medium-high fire on a gas or charcoal grill. Clean and oil the grates to prevent sticking. Using a pastry brush, dab both sides of the bread slices with 2 TBL. Oil and sprinkle with ½ tsp salt. Grill the bread until it browns and gets good grill marks, about 2 minutes. Grill the other side until browned, about 2 minutes, and transfer the bread to a large cutting board to cool. Rub the cut sides of the garlic over the bread and discard the garlic. Put the cherry tomatoes and scallions in a large serving bowl with the basil. Cut the bread into 1-inch pieces and add to the bowl. In a small bowl, whisk the remaining oil with the red wine vinegar, pour over the bread mixture, and toss well. Let the salad sit for up to 2 hours before serving. Just before serving, fold in the mozzarella and season with salt to taste.

Sounds like a lot of work but it is REALLY yummy and well worth it!

LIBRARY DISPLAY

Library display cases just this past week. Thank you very much for your efforts, and thanks to everyone that donated items to put into the display. Everyone should take the time to go check it out! The display will be in place until September 16.

Minutes

President, Mabel Stoker had a brief business meeting. She thanked the picnic committee of Effie Troyer, Bev Haven and Peggy Hodge.

Birthdays were announced and the Cancer quilting zodiac read.

The Christmas committee chair, Sally Kitchen reported on the plans. The exchange will be any item that is new and has a Christmas tree in it. The gift exchange will be a regular sized shoe box filled with 9 items beginning with each letter in the word “CHRISTMAS” It is to cost under $15, have one home made item, label each item, and gift wrap it. The items may be sewing or quilting related, and it was suggested that all quilters need chocolate.

The quilt shop trip will be Tuesday, August 2nd, leaving at 8:30am from the parking lot on the corner of Lincoln Way and Fry Rd. A sign up sheet was passed.

Gwen Hoover reported on Fair Demonstrations. They will be help on Tuesday, 9/13 and Wednesday, 9/14 from 3pm to 4pm. They would like volunteers to give brief, 20 minute demonstrations of some quilting related item or technique. This is a good way to reach new quilters and to promote quilting.

Retreat surveys were passed out and members encouraged to give their opinions.

The August 8th program will be presented by Dr. Virginia Gunn, textile professor at Akron U. and curator of the Wayne County Historical Society. Feel free to bring guests for this special program.

Tuesday, June 28 at 7:00 pm Laura Nolletti will give a lecture/demo on designing kaleidoscope quilts using books by both Paula Nadelstern and Ricky Tims. Cost is $3.00. You will want to bring a pencil and notepad for taking notes. You will learn 2 techniques for making unique kaleidoscope blocks and have the opportunity to design your won original kaleidoscope block. This is one of those “you won’t want to miss it” opportunities!

TIP OF THE MONTH

Don’t get hung up on choosing fabrics that coordinate perfectly. Quite often it is the “sour” piece of fabric that makes a scrappy quilt more interesting.

KITCHEN CORNER

Fruit Swirl Coffee Cake from Naomi Lance (June meeting)

1 ½ cups sugar

½ cup marg or butter, softened

½ cup shortening

1 ½ teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 teaspoon almond extract (Naomi used vanilla)

4 eggs

3 cups flour

1 can (21 oz.) fruit pie filling

Glaze

Heat oven to 350. Grease a jelly roll pan, 15 ½ X 10 ½ X 1 inch. Beat sugar, margarine, shortening, baking powder, vanilla, almond extract, and eggs in large mixer bowl on low speed, scraping bowl constantly, until blended. Beat on high speed, scraping bowl occasionally, 3 minutes. Stir in flour. Spread 2/3 of the batter in jelly roll pan. Spread pie filling over batter. Drop remaining batter by tablespoonfuls onto pie filling. Bake until light brown, about 45 minutes. Drizzle with Glaze while warm. Cut cake in bars about 21/2 X 2 inches.

Glaze: Beat 1 cup powdered sugar and 1 to 2 tablespoons milk until smooth and of desire consistency.

Call to Order was by president, Mabel Stoker. She thanked the refreshment committee, Toni Phillips, Cassie Anderson and Lola Franks. Mabel read the quilters’ zodiac for Gemini and Dorothy Pearson announced June birthdays.

Secretary’s Report was available by mail or in the newsletter by email. It was approved as written. If you are not receiving it, please contact Barb Byler to arrange to get it through the postal service (you provide stamped envelopes) or email.

Jane Richardson read Treasurer’s Report. The current balance is $1,310.36. The treasury had been inflated due to all the money collected for the retreat from those attending, and the return of the $1,500 from Bridges of Hope, which was then sent to the 3 charities the members voted on. The retreat money has all been paid and the fabric for the top of the raffle quilt has been paid.

Old Business: We received a thank you and a check from the Wayne County Choral Union for the loan of quilts and items for their display.

Vicky Hartzler gave a report on the retreat. From the verbal feedback received, those attending appreciated the professional teachers and the samples and ideas they had to share, the convenience and comfort of the facility, the time together, and the truck show. In November 2010, the guild had voted to help with up to $2,210.00 for the retreat. The actual amount the guild paid was $1,500.978.

A survey was distributed asking for members input on future retreats. The committee wants members' input before proceeding with planning for any more retreats. The surveys will be available at the next meeting, the picnic, then collected and the information processed.

New Business: Information was shared about the Glencoe Quilt, which was discovered 15 miles from its home and carried by the Joplin tornados.

Roscoe Village will host a display of "unique quilts” until 8/7/11.

At the August meeting, there will be a speaker, Dr. Virginia Dunn, a professor of textiles at the University of Akron. She will speak about preserving and storing quilts. She is in charge of preserving the vintage textile items at the Wayne County Historical Society.

Trips and Workshops:

Laura Nolletti will give a lecture/demo on designing Kaleidoscope quilts on June 28 from 7 to 9pm. The cost is $3.00 for members and $5.00 for non-members. She will discuss 2 types of designs, the Paula Nadelstern with more math and the Ricky Timms, which is easier but not as detailed. Take a 12-inch quilt ruler and a pencil. It will be at the Parkview church.

Committee Reports:

Picnic Committee: The July meeting will be at the Church of God on Rt. 585 at 6pm. Please bring table service, a covered dish and a table runner for the challenge.

Community Service: Ruth Bishop thanked all who helped with the knotting at MCC. MCC received patterns and some fat quarters from Hearthside quilt shop, which has gone out of business.

Program: What's in the Middle? was presented by Sarah Bisline and Jeri Fickes. Sarah had lots of samples of batting to pass around and discuss. Jeri Fickes showed the 'board basting' technique. You had to be there!

JULY PICNIC: Details

The challenge this year will be a table runner. There is no size or other restrictions. A group vote at the picnic will determine the favorite. Members are being asked to bring a covered dish and their own table service. Tree City will provide the beverage. More details later so keep your eyes open!

“FIRST” QUILTS

The first baby boy and girl born in Wooster Community Hospital in 2012 will receive a quilt from Tree City Quilters guild made by volunteers Gwen Hoover and Dorothy Pearson. Thanks to both for volunteering for his project.

TIP OF THE MONTH

When machine quilting miniature projects, use a shorter-than-normal stitch length. The stitches will be better proportioned to the quilt’s small size.

KITCHEN CORNER

CHEDDAR-RICE SALAD

3 cups cooked rice, chilled

3 ribs celery, sliced

2 cups chopped broccoli

1 red pepper, chopped

2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese

1 cup Ranch dressing

½ cup salsa

Mix all ingredients, toss gently. Chill overnight.


BLINTZ LOAF

1 stick butter, melted

1 c. small curd cottage cheese

Cream together until smooth. Add ½ c. Bisquick and blend.

Then add 3T sugar slowly, and 3 eggs, one-at-a-time. Blend well.

Pour into greased loaf pan. Bake at 350* 40 min. Slice and serve

with fresh strawberries and sour cream.

SALMON AND BROWN RICE

1 - 10 oz pkg frozen corn

1 - 6 1/2 oz can salmon, drained

3/4 cup brown rice, raw

2/3 cup water

2 T chicken bouillon granules

2 green onions, sliced

1/2 tsp dill weed

1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Preheat oven to 375*. In a 1 1/2 quart casserole, combine corn, salmon, uncooked rice, water, green onions, bouillon granules and dill weed. Cover and bake 30 minutes or until rice is tender. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake uncovered, 5 minutes more or until cheese melts.

Call to Order by president, Mabel Stocker. She thanked the refreshment committee, Dorothy Pearson, Gwen Hoover, and Wilma McCurdy. Mabel read the quilter’s zodiac for Taurus, and birthdays were announced.

Secretary’s report was approved as published in the newsletter.

Treasurer’s report: was read by Jane Richardson. As of 4/30/11 there is a balance of 2,862.11 after the expenses for the retreat were paid.

Old Business:

A sign up sheet was sent around for the 2012 first babies born at Wooster Hospital quilts. There was a choice to do it all, or help with a part of the quilt.

The membership voted on the charities which would receive the $1500 that was returned from Bridges of Hope. It was decided to give $500 to 3 different charities. The winners were MOCA House, Viola Startzman Free Clinic, and People to People.

There are still membership booklets available for anyone who has not received one.

New Business:

Hearthside Quilt Shop is going out of business by 5/13/11. Everything is 70% off.

The June program will be on sandwiching a quilt-what’s in the middle? She is looking for assistance with it. Sarah Bistline offered to help.

Laura gave a report on the retreat, and thanked everyone for the guild’s help in making it possible. The retreat committee members would like feedback of one positive, and one suggestion from those who attended. The participants showed the quilts they had made during the class. What a variety of colors.

Jane Richardson talked about the Wayne County Choral Union’s concert at Wooster High School this Sat. evening, 5/14/11 at 7:30. There will be displays of local artists’ work, including quilters. Vicky Hartzler’s will be featured and other members have volunteered to have their work displayed.

Janet MacFarland showed a quilt she had received after a tragedy, and suggested members consider making quilts for the tornado victims in the South. She said there will be a need for months, as people will be homeless for a long time, and they will be appreciated any time.

Committee Reports:

Picnic Committee Bev Haven reminded members that there is a table runner challenge, to bring a covered dish and table service. It will be at the Church of God on Akron Road at the pavilion, as it has been in the past.

Workshops and Trips Laura Nolletti will do a demo/lecture on making Kaleidoscope quilts on Tues June 28 at 7pm. This is based on books by Paula Nadelstern and Ricky Tims. Please bring a pencil and notebook and $5.00 for the lecture. Participants will make 2 unique blocks using this technique.

The Akron Art Museum will be hosting Kaleidoscope Quilts: the Art of Paula Nadelstern from June 18 to October 2, 2011 at 1 South High Street, Akron, 44308

Program was on quilting and knotting the quilt by Effie Troyer, Laura Nolletti, Sarah Bistline and Donna Williams passed out Ruth Bishop’s info on knotting as Ruth could not be there.

Show and Tell was wonderful as usual.

Everything Old is New Again is available every month for people wanting ideas and feedback on their projects or UFO’s.

Come to the May meeting where a panel of 4 experienced quilters will discuss/demonstrate the different types of quilting available to finish your quilts. 2010 QUILT SHOW……YES, 2010!

In 2010 the Guild made the decision to donate the profit from our 2010 raffle quilt to the local Bridges of Hope program. Unfortunately, that program was ended in February 2011 and our $1500 was returned. We need to decide upon another organization that would benefit from a $1500 donation. The following suggestions have been made: Viola Startzman clinic, People to People, Every Woman’s House, Pregnancy Care Center, children’s Services, Salvation Army. A vote will be held during the May meeting to make this important decision.

JULY PICNIC: Details

The challenge this year will be a table runner. There is no size or other restrictions. A group vote at the picnic will determine the favorite. Members are being asked to bring a covered dish and their own table service. Tree City will provide the beverage. More details later so keep your eyes open!

COMMUNITY CHORAL CONCERT, MAY 14

Thanks for volunteering to supply items for a table at the Choral Union concert. If anyone else is interested in supplying an item or 2, that would be great! Tickets will be supplied so you may have an opportunity to enjoy parts of the concert. June 28; Tuesday, 7 p.m. lecture/demo on designing kaleidoscope quilts by Laura

Nolletti using Paula Nadelstern’s Kaleidoscopes and Quilts and Ricky Tims’ Kool Kaleidoscope Quilts books. Cost is $5.00 Bring a pencil and a notepad. Learn two techniques for making unique kaleidoscope blocks. You will have an opportunity to design your own original kaleidoscope block.

August 2; Tuesday, Quilt Shop Trip to Mount Vernon. Join other quilters for a fun day

September 24; Saturday, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Zippered Screen Tote class by Mary Lou

Cost is $5.00 plus pattern. This will be a fun opportunity to use a novelty print and learn to use screen material in your projects. 9 a.m. set up, class will begin promptly at 9:30. Bring a sack lunch, snack to share, sewing machine and supplies.

October 27; Thursday evening, Christmas gifts; Cost $10.00. Participants will receive

patterns at the workshop. These will be demos, no machines needed. You may bring cutting tools and fabric. More information will be given prior to the workshop. Coasters and hot pads, pillowcases, insulated casserole cover, folded fabric stars-Techniques demonstrated will be sewing, rotary cutting, zippers, and folded fabric.

TIP OF THE MONTH

Hand-sewing needles have a right and wrong side to the eye. If you are having difficulty threading a needle, rotate it to the opposite side. You might be surprised at how much easier it will be to thread!

KITCHEN CORNER

EASY AND DELICIOUS CREAM CHEESE POTATOES

3-5 LBS redskin potatoes, cubed with skin on

8oz cream cheese, room temp.

1/2 cup milk

4 green onions, chopped including greens

2T dill weed

In large pot of well-salted water, simmer potatoes until barely fork-tender. Meanwhile, in small saucepan heat milk and cream cheese together with onions and dill until creamy . Drain potatoes and gently fold in cream cheese sauce. Pour into casserole dish, top with paprika for color and bake at 350* until bubbly.

SIMPLE CORN SALSA

1 can black beans, rinsed and drained

1-2 cups frozen corn

1 rib celery, chopped

2 green onions, chopped including green tops

1/2 each yellow, orange and red sweet pepper, chopped

1 can diced tomatoes, drained

1/4 cup Zesty Lite Italian dressing

Mix all together and add refrigerate until ready to serve. Serve with toasted pita bread or tortilla chips.
