July Meeting
Tree City Quilters
The purpose of this organization shall be to create, stimulate, and maintain an interest in all matters pertaining to the making of quilts and to establish and promote educational endeavors through quilts.

JULY MEETING: Picnic!
Please notice the change of time and meeting place for our July picnic. Remember to bring your completed table runner challenge, a covered dish, and your own table service. Beverage will be provided. Our annual picnic is always a lot of fun! Plan to be there and we’ll all have a great time!

Do you have a quilt project that has been put away for awhile? Did you run up against a problem with it? Bring it in to the meeting! We would love to make suggestions and help you solve any problems.
KALEIDOSCOPE LECTURE: **this week!
Tuesday, June 28 at 7:00 pm Laura Nolletti will give a lecture/demo on designing kaleidoscope quilts using books by both Paula Nadelstern and Ricky Tims. Cost is $3.00. You will want to bring a pencil and notepad for taking notes. You will learn 2 techniques for making unique kaleidoscope blocks and have the opportunity to design your won original kaleidoscope block. This is one of those “you won’t want to miss it” opportunities!
QUILT EXHIBIT: Akron Art Museum
Kaleidoscope Quilts; The art of Paula Nadelstern
Akron is the only Midwest venue for this stunning exhibition featuring 19 contemporary quilts, 12 kaleidoscope quilt blocks by Nadelstern, and e4arly 19th century star pattern quilt, contemporary kaleidoscopes and two rare early kaleidoscopes. June 18 – October 2, 2011. Plan to visit!
TCQ RETREAT
The retreat committee is meeting in July to begin planning our next event. Please remember to get your questionnaires into Vicky Hartzler. They want your opinions, suggestions, and ideas!
WORKSHOPS AND TRIPS
Committee: Lou Ella Imhoff, Mary Lou Nuzum, and Laura Nolletti have planned a variety of fun and interesting events for the coming year. Please be sure to attend when you can to expand your quilting skills and enjoy the fellowship of other quilters. Payment for workshops, demos, and trips will be requited at the time of sign up. Mark your calendars now!
August 2; Tuesday, Quilt Shop Trip to Mount Vernon. Join other quilters for a fun day
visiting three shops in Mount Vernon and lunch too! Cost is $3 for gas plus lunch will be dutch treat. More information will be coming. See Lou Ella Imhoff for details.
September 24; Saturday, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Zippered Screen Tote class by Mary Lou
Cost is $5.00 plus pattern. This will be a fun opportunity to use a novelty print and learn to use screen material in your projects. 9 a.m. set up, class will begin promptly at 9:30. Bring a sack lunch, snack to share, sewing machine and supplies.
October 27; Thursday evening, Christmas gifts; Cost $10.00. Participants will receive
patterns at the workshop. These will be demos, no machines needed. You may bring cutting tools and fabric. More information will be given prior to the workshop. Coasters and hot pads, pillowcases, insulated casserole cover, folded fabric stars-Techniques demonstrated will be sewing, rotary cutting, zippers, and folded fabric.
TIP OF THE MONTH
Don’t get hung up on choosing fabrics that coordinate perfectly. Quite often it is the “sour” piece of fabric that makes a scrappy quilt more interesting.
KITCHEN CORNER
Fruit Swirl Coffee Cake from Naomi Lance (June meeting)
1 ½ cups sugar
½ cup marg or butter, softened
½ cup shortening
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon almond extract (Naomi used vanilla)
4 eggs
3 cups flour
1 can (21 oz.) fruit pie filling
Glaze
Heat oven to 350. Grease a jelly roll pan, 15 ½ X 10 ½ X 1 inch. Beat sugar, margarine, shortening, baking powder, vanilla, almond extract, and eggs in large mixer bowl on low speed, scraping bowl constantly, until blended. Beat on high speed, scraping bowl occasionally, 3 minutes. Stir in flour. Spread 2/3 of the batter in jelly roll pan. Spread pie filling over batter. Drop remaining batter by tablespoonfuls onto pie filling. Bake until light brown, about 45 minutes. Drizzle with Glaze while warm. Cut cake in bars about 21/2 X 2 inches.
Glaze: Beat 1 cup powdered sugar and 1 to 2 tablespoons milk until smooth and of desire consistency.
