KITCHEN KORNER

Pecan Topped Baked White Fish

2 – 4 fish fillets

3 Tbl butter + 3-4 Tbl olive oil

1 stalk celery, chopped fine

1 small onion, chopped fine

4 oz. fresh mushrooms, chopped

¼ cup finely chopped carrot

Salt & pepper

¾ cupped chopped pecans

1 tsp cayenne pepper

1 Tbl paprika

In casserole dish melt butter with olive oil in microwave until just melted. Stir together. Add chopped celery, onion, mushrooms and carrots. Add salt and pepper to taste. Toss all together to coat all the vegetables. Add fish fillets or steaks and carefully turn to cover with butter/veggie mixture. Top the prepared fish with chopped pecans and sprinkle evenly with cayenne and paprika. Cover, leaving 2 vents (I placed the lid on askew) and bake at 350* for 20-30 minutes, depending on thickness of the fish. Uncover and bake 10 more minutes.

ROASTED RED PEPPER SPREAD ~

2 - 12oz jars roasted red peppers, do not discard liquid

6 oz goat cheese

1/2 cup pine nuts (I used half pumpkin seeds and half sunflower seeds)

1 cup chopped escarole or spinach or fresh basil (depends on season and availability)

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

On cookie sheet, toss together seeds or nuts and about 1T Parmesan. Toast lightly. In baking dish sprayed with cooking spray, make two layers of roasted red peppers (cut into small strips), then escarole or basil, then seeds or nuts, then goat cheese. Drizzle liquid remaining in ONE of the roasted red pepper jars over all, then top with remaining grated Parmesan cheese. Bake at 375* for 10-12 minutes. You can garnish all with chopped tomatoes and chopped black olives. Serve with crackers or crusty bread.

EASY BEEF STROGANOFF

1 ½ lbs lean ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
1 cup skim milk
3T flour
½ cup Parmesan cheese
½ cup white wine
8 oz fresh mushrooms, sliced
½ tsp oregano
In large skillet sauté ground beef and onion. Drain. In small saucepan thicken milk with flour, stirring constantly over medium heat. Add cheese, wine, mushrooms, oregano, plus salt and pepper to taste. Stir until smooth and add to meat mixture. Heat through and serve over cooked noodles or rice.

FAVORITE CHICKEN

4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves
1/4 cup Dijon mustard
1/4 cup teriyaki sauce
4 green onions, chopped
1 can mushrooms, drained
1/4 cup bottled roasted red peppers, diced
1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
Preheat oven to 400 degrees and line a 9x13 baking dish or pan with foil, spray foil with non-stick spray. Measure 1/4 cup mustard in a glass cup measure, add teriyaki sauce to make 1/2 cup total. Stir to blend and pour mixture over chicken in pan. Sprinkle with mushrooms, onions and red pepper. Bake uncovered for 25 minutes; remove from oven and sprinkle with cheese; bake for 10 more minutes or until chicken is done.

Carrying a 3 X 5 card in your purse or wallet with handy information can save you time and frustration. One piece of information I regularly carry with me are common quilt sizes.

Moderate to heavy quilting may shrink a quilt 1 – 3 inches. Consider this shrinkage when planning your finished size.

January Minutes

January Minutes

Meeting was called to order by President Cassie Anderson.

Our guild has been selected by NEORC to be featured on their website. Marie______________from NEOROC was in attendance to observe and take photos for the website.

Cassie explained a trivia game that will be held each month. There will be a question at the sign up table. Each person writes the answer on a piece of paper and a name will be drawn from all the correct answers.

Thank you card read from Ruth Bishop, Quilter of the Year for 2011.

Thanks to Barb Byler and Vicky Hartzler for compiling this years' Membership Booklet. By Laws were included this year and there are some changes to be made. They will work on locating current bylaws and if/when located will update everyone's booklet.

One change to meeting programs - Rose Marie's program on Cultural Influences in Quilting will be August 13 and the auction will take place on May 14. Further discussion of the auction will be held next meeting to decide on distribution of auction money.

Cassie explained the planned monthly book review. A sign up sheet was circulated for a 3-4 minute book review presentation on any kind of book about quilting. Can be a novel, instruction book or anything that pertains to quilting.

Treasurer current balance $1646.89
Community projects - first baby of the year quilts were delivered. Thank you to Gwen and Dorothy for making those quilts.
Workshops - there will be a reversible table runner workshop on February 25 at the Church from
9AM - 3PM taught by Jane Richardson. Cost $5. Sign up sheet circulated.
Quilt Show August 10& 11
Sara Bistline reported that the committee met in December. She went over the categories for judging. There will be a quilters boutique. There will also be vendors. We will be presented with a challenge at next meeting. Each will receive 1/8 yd. of fabric to create an 18 X 24 piece for "Lincoln Highway runs thru Tree City Country". More details to follow.

New Business

Mable Stocker was appointed as historian for the guild. She is collecting materials and will get them into a scrapbook for members to enjoy. It was suggested that the scrapbook be displayed at the quilt show in August.

Discussion of a buy/sell section to be included in the newsletter. Tabled until next meeting.

PROGRAM

"What's on a Label" was presented by Sally Kitchen with much interaction from members.
Jolene Rehm and Jeri Fickes talked about choosing fabric for the One Block Wonder. They will conduct a workshop on April 14 (changed from date shown in membership booklet)

Naomi Lance was the winner of the trivia game.

Meeting adjourned.

Refreshments were furnished by Pat Hall, Sue Jusli and Sally Kitchen and were enjoyed by all.

DECEMBER MEETING: CHRISTMAS PARTY!

Please plan on joining the guild at our annual Christmas party. Our challenge is to sew anything with a tree in it. For our gift exchange, we are to wrap a shoe box that has been filled with gifts related to quilting in some way. One item for every letter of the word C H R I S T M A S. 1. At least 1 item must be purchased and 2. All items must be related to Quilting.

You can bring a plate of goodies (a dozen cookies, candy or tasty treat) to exchange. Don’t forget your covered dish!

MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

I want to express my sincere thanks for all your support and willingness to take on tasks to promote quilting and the guild. I hope you enjoyed the year as much as I did. I also hope that you learned something new during the year. I was always amazed at all the beautiful and artistic things that you displayed during the Show and Tell. Each one of you is a very talented and artistic person. I also enjoy the friendliness of the Guild. We come from many different backgrounds but are held together by a common thread. channel 45 at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday evenings. This program is presented by the Kentucky Quilts Project and Shelley Zegart. It is a nine part series on the history of quilts. Very interesting!

KITCHEN CORNER:

FAST AND FABULOUS PUMPKIN DIP
Mix together:
8 oz softened cream cheese
2 C powdered sugar
1 T vanilla
Add:
15oz can pureed pumpkin
1 T cinnamon
1 T pumpkin pie spice
½ tsp nutmeg
1 tsp frozen orange juice concentrate
Stir to blend thoroughly. Refrigerate 1 hr and serve with ginger snaps or apple slices.

Most of us raised in the 50's and 60's have vivid memories of the requisite Jello salad at every holiday table. It usually had marshmallows and if it was summer, mayonnaise. Give this Jello salad a try if you want a grown-up re-mix!! It tastes as sophisticated as it looks!

FESTIVE BERRY MOLD
2 - 3oz pkgs raspberry jello
2 cups boiling water
1 can whole berry cranberry sauce
2 cups chunky applesauce
1 - 11oz Mandarin oranges, drained
Dressing:
8 oz softened cream cheese
8 oz sour cream
Mix jello and boiling water together until well blended. Add cranberry sauce, applesauce and orange segments and stir gently. Pour into large, greased jello mold. Chill overnight. With electric mixer blend together softened cream cheese and sour cream until smooth. Chill. When ready to serve, unmold gelatin onto serving plate and place sour cream / cream cheese mixture in the center of the mold as a dressing.

Whether you have kids at your holiday table or not, this unique dessert is guaranteed to bring out the kid in everyone!
LUSCIOUS LAYERED PUMPKIN DESSERT
1 pkg (10-count) Twinkies
1 - 8 oz pkg cream cheese, softened
1 cup confectioners' sugar
1 - 8 oz container Cool Whip, thawed
2 - 3.4 oz pkgs instant vanilla pudding
1 - 15 oz can pumpkin puree
1 cup milk
1 ½ tsp pumpkin pie spice
Slice Twinkies in half, lengthwise and place, cream side up along the bottom of a 9x13 pan. Blend together softened cream cheese, confectioners' sugar and half of the Cool Whip until smooth. Spread over Twinkies. Combine pudding, pumpkin spice and milk. Whisk until well-blended and spread over cream cheese mixture. Refrigerate several hours and serve with remaining Cool Whip and sprinkles of pumpkin pie spice.

Now, on the lighter side.....
TUSCAN WHITE BEAN SOUP
1 onion, chopped
3 ribs celery, chopped
3 large cloves garlic, minced or grated
1 - 15 oz can pumpkin puree
4 cups chicken broth
1 - 15 oz can white beans, rinsed and drained
½ head of cabbage, chopped
½ tsp dried oregano

salt/pepper
In stock pot heat 3T olive oil and sauté onion, celery and garlic until tender and onions are translucent. Add remaining ingredients, cover and simmer, stirring occasionally until cabbage is very tender. Serve with warm crusty bread. (optional: use an immersion blender and puree the soup until it thickens and has a coarse blended texture)

AMAZING MUFFINS
Combine one box cake mix (try German chocolate or spice!) and 1 - 15 oz can solid pack pumpkin. Mix well and pour into greased or papered muffin tins. Bake at 350* for 20-30 min. Be sure to inhale a lot while these are baking!! Yummmmm!

If this recipe doesn't say autumn then nothing can!
APPLE/SWEET POTATO BAKE
3 Granny Smith apples, cored and thinly sliced (you can leave peel on)
Toss with 1-2 T lemon juice
2 -3 sweet potatoes peeled and sliced as thinly as possible
¼ cup apple cider
¼ cup melted butter
1 tsp cinnamon
½ tsp nutmeg
Set aside nicest slices of apples and sweet potatoes for garnish and layer the rest in 1 ½ qt baking dish, alternating potatoes and apples. Place reserved apples and potatoes across top of casserole in a pinwheel pattern. Mix cider with spices and over mixture. Drizzle half the melted butter over all. Cover and bake at 350* for 1 hr. Brush remaining butter over top, sprinkle with a bit more cinnamon and nutmet, and continue to bake, uncovered, for 15 minutes.

Minutes of November Meeting

Minutes

Call to Order: President, Mabel Stoker called the meeting to order. Two visitors, Linda and Bonnie, and a new member, Sarah McKee were welcomed. Mabel thanked the refreshment committee, Marian Wellert, Tonya Wellert, Rose Marie Babb and Lou Ella Imhoff. Birthdays were recognized, and there were many of them.

Secretary’s Report: Vicky Hartzler made a correction on the people who were Quilter of the Year—Sally Kitchen was one, and Betty Boreman was not. This was corrected in the minutes.

Treasurer’s Report: Jane Richardson reported that there is a balance of $1,242.94. Many people did pay dues at the meeting, so this will increase by next month.

Old Business: Mabel gave a reminder that dues must be paid this month for people to be included in the membership booklet.

Donna Williams and Janice Miller conducted the election of officers. There was a selection, and the following won the positions: Members at large were Sara Bistline and Gwen Hoover; Secretary will be Janet McFarland; Treasurer will be Naomi Lance and Vice President will be Jim Rawdon

Cassie asked people to sign up for committees and the sheet was passed around.

Janet McFarland, Jeri Fickes and Nancy Danby conducted the Quilter of the Year election. The winner will be announced at the Christmas party.

New Business:

Mabel read a letter that she and Vicky Hartzler had prepared to send to the Fair Board regarding the displays at Buss Hall. Suggestions were obtained from the group and the decision was made to send it. Barb Byler suggested the letter be sent to each board member individually so it is sure to be seen by all. The Fair Board meets on the third Monday at 8am and in December and January, will meet at 1pm on Saturdays at the Red Cross building at the Fair grounds.

Quilters Give a Hoot is the name of the NEORQC get away weekend on Feb. 17, 18 and 19, 2012. The website to check it out is getaway@neorqc.com. It will be held at Quail Hollow.
Committee Reports:

Sally Kitchen discussed the Christmas party, which will be on 12/12/11 at 6pm at the church. Table service will be provided.

Sara Bistline said she would have a report on the Quilt Show committee next month.

Program: Carol Remington gave a lecture and demo on making floor quilts. Thank you so much for your time, Carol.

Mabel’s sister, Carol Remington, will present a program on the history of floor quilts and will also demonstrate how to make them. Could be a great Christmas idea! Sounds very interesting! Hope to see you there.

October 27; Thursday evening, Christmas gifts; Cost $5.00.
Please plan to join us Thursday, October 27, at 7 p.m. for three different demonstrations of easy to make Christmas gifts. Those attending will receive patterns at the workshop. These will be demos, no machines needed. You may bring cutting tools, mat and fabric if you want to get started. Learn to make coasters and hot pads, pillowcases, insulated casserole cover, and folded fabric stars. Techniques demonstrated will be sewing, rotary cutting, attaching zippers, and folded fabric.

Insulated casserole cover: you will receive insulated batting- other materials required are one yard of 100 % cotton quilting fabric (themed fabrics with fruits or vegetables, coffee, cupcakes, etc. are fun to use) and a 22 inch or longer regular zipper. KITCHEN CORNER:

SLOW-COOKER POTATO CORN CHOWDER

1 - 16oz bag frozen hash browns, thawed
1 chopped onion
8 slices bacon, fried crisp and crumbled
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 can shoe peg corn (undrained)
1 can cream-style corn
1 can roasted garlic flavored chicken broth
1 ½ cups milk (whole or skim)
Place all ingredients in slow cooker. Stir gently. Cook on low 6-8 hrs. Serve with sour cream or shredded cheese.

SWEET POTATO BISCUITS

2 c. self-rising flour

1 cup mashed sweet potatoes (1 lg. sweet potato will do)
¼ c. sugar

3 T. shortening

1/3 c. milk
2 T. butter
Preheat oven to 400*. Combine flour and sugar in medium bowl. Cut in shortening and butter until mixture resembles coarse meal. Add potatoes and milk and mix until ingredients are just moistened.
Turn dough onto lightly floured surface and knead 4-5 times. Roll dough to ½" thickness. Cut w/ biscuit cutter and place onto lightly greased baking sheet. Bake 15 min. or until golden. Remove from oven an lightly butter tops of biscuits. Makes 12 biscuits.

QUICK AND YUMMY CHERRY CHEESE DESSERT BARS

2 tubes refrigerated crescent roll dough

1-2 cans cherry pie filling

8oz brick cream cheese, softened

1 egg, separated (use white only)

1/2 cup sliced almonds

cinnamon/sugar

On well-greased jelly roll pan, spread one roll of crescent dough, sealing seams and pressing evenly to make crust. Spread cream cheese evenly and thinly across crust dough. Spread pie filling across cheese using enough to cover, but not sew much it will run out when cooking. Carefully spread second roll of dough over all, sealing seams and thinning carefully to stretch and cover. If possible, pinch edges along all 4 sides to seal. Whisk egg white with 1 tsp water and brush over top dough. Sprinkle with almonds and top with sprinkle of cinnamon/sugar. Bake in 375* oven for 10-15 minutes or until golden. Allow to cool before cutting into bars.

MINUTES OF OCTOBER GUILD MEETING

Minutes

Call to Order: President, Mabel Stocker called the meeting to order. There was one visitor, Sarah McKee. Mabel thanked the refreshment committee of Peggy Hodge and Gwen Hoover. Dorothy Pearson announced the birthdays. And Mabel read the quilters’ zodiac.

Secretary’s Report Vicky noted one correction made in last month’s minutes and included the address of one of the quilt shows. They were approved.

Treasurer’s Report: Jane Richardson noted that the balance is $1,032.94. Dues of $15.00 are to be paid this month and next to have your name included in the membership booklet. Members are asked to fill out a slip of paper with their address and email info so it will be correct in the membership booklet.

Old Business: Donna Williams discussed the election, and passed around slips requesting volunteers and/or recommendations for officers.

Cassie noted that the sign up sheets for 2012 committees is on the sign in table, and was passed around.

New Business: Mabel announced upcoming quilt shows and events. See newsletter.

--Jeri Fickes discussed the Quilter of the Year award that will be voted on next month. Mary Lou Nuzum discussed ideas to consider when voting for someone. The people who have already won can not be nominated again. They include Mary Lou Nuzum, Jeri Fickes, Mabel Stocker, Dorothy Pearson, Barb Byler, Laura Noletti, Betty Hofstetter, Betty Boreman, and Effie Troyer.

--Nancy Danby thanked everyone for the cards and best wishes. She looks great!

--Bishop discussed writing a letter to the Wayne County Fair Board with suggestions about making more space for the sewing and quilting entries. Her suggestions included putting the gardens outside, putting flowers in the grange hall or horticulture building as they are not totally full. Then demonstrations could be made in Buss Hall. She will find out when the Board meets. Gwen Hoover volunteered to go and present a letter from the guild. Letters have been sent other years also. Vicky and Mabel will work on the letter.

Committee Reports:

Trips and Workshops: Mary Lou announced the last workshop of the year will be on Thursday, 10/27/11, 7 to 9pm at Parkview Church. The cost is $5.00. Bring fabric, a cutting mat, ruler and rotary cutter, but no machines.

Christmas Party: Sally Kitchen discussed the Christmas party. Bring a covered dish, and options are a shoe-box of items as previously discussed, a challenge with a tree theme, and a goodie exchange of a paper plate of goodies that will be exchanged.

Quilt Show: Sarah Biseline said the quilt show will be August 10 and 11, 2012 at Ida Sue. The raffle quilt is completed. The committee will be meeting this month—Sarah will notify those who volunteered to help.

Program: Peggy Hodges gave the program on Quillows.

OCTOBER MEETING: “QUILLOWS”

Peggy Hodge will be presenting a program on Quillows, those delightful little lap/floor quilts that fold into their own pillow! If any of you have made a Quillow and not given it away as a gift, please bring them in to share with everyone.

Do you have a quilt project that has been put away for awhile? Did you run up against a problem with it? Bring it in to the meeting! We would love to make suggestions and help you solve any problems.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE

It’s that time of year once more! The nominating committee has been working hard and will be reporting to us their slate. Voting will be at the November meeting.

Quilter of the Year

Each year, the members of Tree City Quilt Guild vote for one member that they think represents the very best quilter. Not so much the best quilter in terms of stitching, but in representing our guild, volunteering, sewing, etc. It is time to think about who you think that person is for this year.

RAFFLE QUILT

Jane Richardson would like to thank the rest of the committee - Betty Boreman, Bev Haven, Gwen Hoover, Janet McFarland, Barb Nemeth - ever so much for all the time they spent at my house sewing, pressing and making decisions. Thanks go to Janet, especially, as she volunteered to do the hand quilting and did it in record time and such a good job. Betty will be doing the binding, so the quilt will be ready for pictures and ticket sales very soon. It was really a fun job....

CHRISTMAS PARTY: December 12

Please plan on joining the guild at our annual Christmas party. Our challenge is to sew anything with a tree in it. For our gift exchange, we are to wrap a shoe box that has been filled with gifts related to quilting in some way. One item for every letter of the word C H R I S T M A S. 1. At least 1 item must be purchased, 2. All items must be related to Christmas, and 3. All should be related to quilting in some way! Wow! What a neat idea!

October 27; Thursday evening, Christmas gifts; Cost $5.00.
Please plan to join us Thursday, October 27, at 7 p.m. for three different demonstrations of easy to make Christmas gifts. Those attending will receive patterns at the workshop. These will be demos, no machines needed. You may bring cutting tools, mat and fabric if you want to get started. Learn to make coasters and hot pads, pillowcases, insulated casserole cover, and folded fabric stars. Techniques demonstrated will be sewing, rotary cutting, attaching zippers, and folded fabric.

Insulated casserole cover: you will receive insulated batting- other materials required are one yard of 100 % cotton quilting fabric (themed fabrics with fruits or vegetables, coffee, cupcakes, etc. are fun to use) and a 22 inch or longer regular zipper. QUILT/FABRIC SALES

Fabric for $2.00/yard: everything from old 36" fabric, corduroys, cottons and polyesters, laces, etc. There was a garage full at the last sale, all labeled by the
yardage in each cut!

KITCHEN CORNER: RITA'S FRESH RAW TOMATO SAUCE

3-4 large tomatoes, seeded and chopped

1/4 cup minced red onion or scallions w/ tops

1/4 cup finely chopped bell pepper (any color)

1/2 cup chopped basil

1/2 cup red wine (optional)

1/2 cup olive oil

salt/pepper + pinch of sugar

Mix together and allow to sit for an hour or sew at room temperature. Serve over pasta, rice, fish, lettuce.....whatever. It's yummy!!

Minutes

Call to Order was by president, Mabel Stocker. There was one visitor, Zoë Kaselik. Mabel thanked the refreshment committee of Laura Nolletti, Jolene Rehm, and Jeri Fickes.

Dorothy Pearson announced the birthdays, and Mabel Stocker read the Virgo quilter’s zodiac.

Secretary’s Report was in the newsletter, and was approved as written.

Treasurer’s Report: Jane Richardson announced the balance of $1194.53 as of 9/18/11. Dues are due in October and November, so the members’ names can be added to the booklet for 2012.

Old Business: None

New Business: Several shows and events were announced.

--All Quilts Bright and Beautiful: Celebrating 20 Years of Quilting, by the Heart of Ohio Quilter’s Guild, Bryn Du Mansion Field House, 537 Jones Rd. Granville, Ohio.

--One stop Christmas open house: Saturday Nov. 12 at the Buckeye Event Center, Dalton, Ohio. Christmas gifts and ideas.

--Paula Nadelstern’s Kaleidoscope Quilts at the Akron Art Museum, 1 South High, Akron, until October 2.

Sign up sheets were passed around for committee members for next year’s committees. There are still openings. It is hoped that all members will help in some way on one or more committees and with refreshments.

Trips and Workshops:

Sept. 24, 9 to 3, screen tote using pet screen. Cost $5.00. Mary Lou Nuzum will instruct. Pet screen available at Somewhere Sewing and Chestnut Ridge.

October 27, Thursday eve. Christmas gifts. Cost $5.00. Demos only, don’t bring machines, but can take cutting mats and fabric to make a folded star, pattern for insulated casserole cover, and other items.

Committees:

Donna Williams, nominating committee, passed around papers to fill out to volunteer for officer positions or to suggest others for them.

Mabel thanked Ruth Bishop, Mary Green, and Jeri Fickes for the display at the library. This is a community project to promote interest in quilting. Ruth said there were many positive comments.

Gwen Hoover reported on the demonstrations at the Fair, and thanked those who help with them.

Vicky Hartzler reported on the results of the surveys about retreats. That committee will work on one for 2013 similar to the one that was help this year. The overwhelming majority of members voted to have one and to have the guild subsidize it for $1,000 to $2,000. Members were also interested in having less expensive options, including having members teach, and just sewing time option. Others may pursue this if anyone is interested in forming a group to work on it for 2012. This is also the year of the quilt show, and a lot of energy will go into that.

Sally Kitchen reported on the Christmas party. She passed out a slip with the info on the party. It will be at 6pm at the Parkview Church Fellowship Hall. Bring a covered dish (a sign up was passed around to make sure there is a variety). Also take a plate of goodies to exchange—a dozen of something; your challenge project with a tree on it; and a shoe box of 9 items, one for each letter of “Christmas”. Sally showed a box using “mistletoe”. Write your name and the items for each letter on a card and tape to the inside of the box. All items should be quilt related, and that can include chocolate to keep the quilter going.
