Time Marches on....and we spring forward the week-end before our next meeting. Moving the clock ahead is a sure sign that Spring is not far behind.I hope you have been relaxing with your bag of scraps and producing some "made fabric". This fabric can be any size and any shape as you are just sewing scraps together.I want to send out a "Thank You" to Ruth Bishop and Shirley Rodgers for the two day Community Workshop. They were able to make quite a "dent" in the pile of fabric for the bibs and quilts.Our next meeting is on March 12th and we welcome Lunn Fabrics. They will be vending from 6:00 to 7:00 and then will have their presentation. Our business meeting and show and tell will follow.We have our "No Frills" Retreat on the 17th and 18th of March at Gault Hall and you can join me on the 24th in the Fireside Room at Parkview Church if you would like to make fabric bowls.Our Quilt Show is fast approaching so get those bindings on and any other last minute prep work. Introduction
Kay called the meeting to order & welcomed us all after the long “break” between our meetings – seen enough snow, everyone? She reminded us that if school closures occur (Wooster City Schools?) due to weather concerns, our group does not meet.
We welcomed 2 visitors, Heather, who came to visit from North Royalton & Linda from Creston; and 2 new members, Sarah & Susan.
Birthdays
We celebrated January birthdays first (eight members have January birthdays). Kay asked each celebrant to share what they like best about being guild members. Next, members with February birthdays (5 members were born in this month) shared their opinions.
Reporting
· Secretary’s report: As there was no January meeting, there were no minutes to present.
· Treasurer’s report: Bev Fash provided income & expense Information for December, January & February. Kim Panter moved and Shirley Rodgers seconded acceptance of the reports, and members present approved.
· Quilt Show Committee Report:
o Quilt Display Categories: the Committee provided the listing of Display Categories and detail on the where, when & how for entering quilts. Please see a committee member if you haven’t received this handout.
o Forms required when submitting quilts to the show: the Committee provided two forms to us tonight.
§ First is the listing of quilts you are submitting (Category #, Description, Measurements & Quilt Name). Fill out a line item for each quilt you submit. If you submit more than 5 quilts, prioritize which items (6 and beyond) you’d like to have hung.
§ Second, the template for the quilt label. For each quilt you submit, provide your quilt name, exhibitor name (you), quilted by (if not by you), and a brief quilt story. Jeri Fickes will be providing the template electronically, and you can print your completed label yourself or have her print it for you. Labels will be pinned on the quilts for display. If you have questions, Jeri or Vera Waldman can assist.
o Staffing for the Quilt Expo coming up in early April: we need volunteers to man our booth. Carpooling and some expense reimbursement available. See Vicki Hartzler if you are interested in participating.
o Janet McFarland is managing the vintage quilt exhibit – she’d like those quilts to be submitted at the March or April guild meeting.
o Please do enter your quilts (completed since October 1, 2016) in the show. The quilts won’t be judged, though there will be a Viewer’s Choice ballot.
o Mary Greene is handling the boutique – you can sell items you’ve made, or professionally packaged material. Guild retains 10% of the revenue, you get the rest.
No Frills Retreat March 17 & 18: Michelle Reed reported that 29 members have signed up so far. Becky Hamilton will teach Witch, Snowman & Santa – she’ll provide as much fabric, precut, as possible. If you want to donate fabric (red, white, purple, black…), bring it to the March meeting (measurements for the squares need to be exact & Becky will use the AccuCut to produce them). Becky will provide more info at next meeting, and if you have questions beforehand, e-mail her. Can a participant do more than 1 project? Yes – the technique is the same for all. Becky will start the demo at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday – you’ll need to be there at that time to hear the presentation. Patterns are $5 for each project. Becky will also bring most embellishments. Bring your own eyeglasses for Santa (available at Cattan, JoAnn)& large buttons. Bring a mini iron if you can. Michelle will send out the street address for the facility – it’s the old Beall Ave school across from Drug Mart (now a dorm). Sewing, cutting and ironing stations will be set up. Potluck space available. If you don’t have e-mail, let Michelle know how to reach you with last minute info.
· Community Service Committee: Ruth shared that we’re having workshops this coming Friday & Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. We’ll be making baby blankets, clothing protectors for adults & children, etc. Bring your own lunch. There will be fabric available, or you can bring your own. You can also bring any community service projects you’re already working on. Ruth shared a thank you from the Salvation Army (Orrville) for the blankets we provided, and Kay shared one from Wooster Community Hospital for the boy & girl new year quilts.
Workshop Committee: Mary Mahoney introduced her workshop team – Staycie Miller, Barb Byler, Pat Hall, Kevin Horst. See any one of them if you’d like to teach a class. Coming up, we have a session on March 24– Kay Nixon will teach fabric bowls. April will be busy with the quilt show. On June 30, Staycie will teach a market bag class in the afternoon, and Mary M will teach no-sew gift bags in the morning - $9 pattern. Barb will teach a will teach a quilt class in July (details to follow) And Kevin's teaching a strip quilt from 3 Dudes Quilting - date TBD.
* Sunshine Committee: Please let Gwen Alaura Hoover or Lola Franks know if you're aware of a member who is ill or in need of encouragement. Kim will get Gwen box of donated cards she had for this purpose during her tenure on this committee.
Challenges
Kay introduced this year’s challenges. She’s chosen small projects that can help us learn techniques in a short amount of time.
· Challenge 1 - Mystery Squares: Kay provided manila envelopes with instructions & color specifications for a block. The idea is to do something you hadn’t tried before or something you might not choose for yourself. Bring the completed square & the envelope back and it’ll be passed on to someone else. When we have enough squares, we’ll make quilts for the veteran’s home (12 blocks per quilt). You’ll get a token for each block you complete. Turn your tokens in in November, prize in December. You must use the 3 colors prescribed, and you can then add one other color as accents. Final dimension: 12 ½” squares. You can bring your square/envelope back whenever you finish – you can turn one in & pick up another each month, or contribute less frequently if you like.
· Challenge 2: Monster Quilt (Applique): Kay provided a sheet with monster parts – make your own square. No color limitations. Check out Monster Quilts on line & put your own twist on what you see. Make a block & bring it in. 13” start for 12 ½” square. Background = color of your choice.
· Challenge 3: Portrait Quilt – create a picture quilt of a person or a building/landscape using small squares/pieces of different tonal value. You must provide a picture of whatever image you’re creating for comparison. Carpenter’s Cup in Smithville has an interesting example (picture of bistro made up of small squares.) You get a token for your little bag (a big token!) for completing this challenge. Should be at least 36” – want it to be free-flowing, not tedious.
Activities:
· Scrap Bag: We exchanged the bags of scraps we brought in, and will now use them to create “made fabric.” Ideally, we’d spend 15 minutes a day on this project. Stitch scraps together to make fabric. Don’t look at colors – just reach into the bag, pick pieces & stitch. Bring your fabric to the April guild meeting. You can use newsprint as your foundation if you like. Do press to be sure you keep your fabric flat. Don’t have to end up with a square or any other shape. In a future meeting we’ll see what can be created with our “made fabric”. Make as many pieces as you like.
· Bingo: Kay provided us with sewing-themed bingo cards & macaroni markers. Mary M drew & called. We had a winner very quickly (I didn’t catch who won…)
Next Month’s Meeting:
Representatives from Lunn Fabrics will join us – see www.lunnfabrics.co for examples of their beautiful batiks. Since they’re coming from Lancaster, their visit is weather dependent. From 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., they’ll have merchandise available for sale. Their presentation will begin at 7:00 p.m. , followed by our business meeting. Feel free to bring quilting friends. Lunn doesn’t take a fixed fee for their presentations. They support the Ganesa Study Center (ganesastudycenter.org) and only take donations to support that mission. The guild determined that we’d like to donate $500 to that cause. Laura moved that we donate $500 to their mission. Barb Baldner seconded the motion. The motion carried.
Spring Arts & Craft Show February 23rd & 24th at Fisher Auditorium Shisler Conference Center. 120 vendors expected. A flyer was available at the sign-in table. Kim Panter shared that she makes name tags for new members – first one free, if you lose it, there’s a charge for a second.

Our show will be here before you know it. The dates are Friday April 20 from 9am to 6pm and Saturday April 21, from 9am to 3:30pm.

Two challenges have been designed for the show:
Applique Challenge - Floral Applique Item of your choice. Hand or machine applique. Quilter's interpretation. (The planning team reserves the right to split the entries into more categories as needed.)
Garden Party Challenge- Floral themed item. The pattern and/or fabric should have a floral design. (Again, the team reserves the right to split entries into additional categories.) Quiltmakers' interpretation.
The committee handed out quilt show information including category information at February. We are asking this year the quilt story forms that will be displayed on the quilts be turned in typed and ready to hang with the quilts. In the near future we will be e-mailing a template for your use. If you do not have access to a computer and printer, we will have an alternative plan for you.
