Our speaker this evening will be Sarah Bistline. Sarah will discuss and show us the variety of battings that are available for the quilter to use. She has samples for us to touch and see, as well.

Message from Mary Lou
Next February I will celebrate my 72st birthday and expect to celebrate many more. However, living with a chronic disease has caused me to consider my own death and final wishes. I have shared those wishes with my husband and son including a religious funeral, cremation, and interment in the memorial garden on my beloved Long Beach Island, New Jersey.
After I die, I hope I spend eternity sitting on a cloud with Jesus drinking Jasmine tea and having no need of any of my earthly possessions. However, when I think of the distribution of many items that have given me pleasure in my life, I have some definite wishes. I want the things I have used, made and loved to go to people who will use and appreciate them. I don’t want my Bernina sitting unused in someone’s unheated shed. I don’t want my quilts to be used for dog beds. I don’t want my Ginger scissors cutting out coupons from the newspaper. I don’t want my quilting fabric selling for a quarter a yard at a thrift store. I want someone to use and enjoy these things.
Along with some other instructions, I have shared the following with my family:
“Sewing machines, fabric, quilt books, thread, notions (scissors, rulers, etc.): Please offer these to my sister and daughter-in-law first. If they do not want these, please give them to the Tree City Quilt Guild. They can be given or sold to guild members and their families and friends. If any money is received from these items, please donate it to the guild treasury. Please do not give these items to Goodwill or another thrift store. I want them to go to people who will appreciate and use them.
“Quilts, wall hanging, table runners and other quilted items. My husband should have first choice and may keep all or some. Next they should be offered to my son. After he has chosen all he would like, please distribute to family members who would like them. Give any leftovers to the quilt guild for distribution as appropriate. Please do not donate these items to a thrift store. See above.”
I am sharing this so that some of you may think about it and then initiate a discussion with your family about the distribution of your possessions. You certainly don’t need to make the same decisions I have made but you should have a say in the disposition of your things.

WORKSHOPS
The Ongoing Handwork Group will meet this Friday, September 5 from 9:00a.m. to 11:50 a.m. There is no demo this month, but everyone is encouraged to join us and work on finishing their items for the quilt show!

2014 QUILT SHOW
· Workshops; we currently have 14 members signed up for the 2 workshops. These are free classes in exchange for you volunteering hours at the quilt show. The sign-up sheet and pictures of the quilts will be available at the September meeting. Non-members are also able to sign up for these classes; $20 for the Magic Square and $30 for Storm at Sea. Barb Byler has your list of fabric requirements. Bring your machine, cutting tools, and sewing necessities.
· Please plan to wear a white blouse and your Tree City name badge for any hours that you are volunteering at the quilt show. (except Thursday)
· You may sell items you have made at the boutique at the quilt show. New items only. You will need to fill out an agreement form. Please see Mary Green for more information.
· All medium to large size quilts must have sleeves for hanging.
· Please let Dot Anderson know what you will be entering in the quilt show if you haven't done so already. You can use the quilt entry form or give her a call. We need to know the size of the quilt, how it was constructed, etc.
· You will need a City Blues Entry Form for the quilts/items you enter. These will be available at the September meeting and can also be emailed to you. Leave the number line blank.
· Sell your raffle tickets! This is an easy way for each member to help market our show. As the show has changed where it has been for years, it is very important for everyone to participate.
· If you signed up to assist with judging on Thursday, please plan to arrive at the Center at 7:45 AM. Barb will have assignments and instructions ready for you.
KITCHEN KORNER
BLUEBERRY STREUSEL COFFEE CAKE
1 cup butter (no substitutions)
2 cups sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
4 eggs (at room temperature)
3 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
16 ounces sour cream
1 pint fresh blueberries
Streusel topping:
1 C. brown sugar (firmly packed)
1 1/4 cups flour
3 tsp cinnamon
1 cup butter (cold, cut into small cubes)
- To prepare struesel topping ~ In a medium sized bowl combine all ingredients, using a pastry cutter to cut butter into dry ingredients until mixture is crumbly and about the size of tiny peas -- set aside.
- In a large bowl cream butter, sugar and vanilla until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in separate bowl. Add half the container of sour cream and beat until well combined. Gradually add half of your dry ingredients, continuing to mix well. Add rest of the sour cream, continuing to mix, and then the rest of the dry ingredients beating on high for 2 minutes. Gently fold in blueberries.
Spray a 9x13 pan with cooking spray and pour in half the batter. Spread to cover the bottom of the pan. Sprinkle 1/2 the streusel topping on this. Pour remaining batter over all and spread evenly. Use a butter knife and make swirls through the batter. Sprinkle remaining streusel across the top. Place in 350* pre-heated oven for 70-75 minutes. Let cool before slicing.
CORN SALAD
3 cans whole corn, drained
1 each, red and green bell pepper, chopped
1 red onion, chopped
1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
3/4 cup Hidden Valley Ranch dressing
2 cups Chili Cheese Fritos
In large bowl mix all together except Fritos. Just before serving still in Fritos. Enjoy!!
....and while we're on the subject of CORN ~ you're gonna LOVE this!!

8/11/14 Board meeting minutes: Present: Jeri Fickes, Barb Byler, Jim Rawdon, Jolene Rehm, Sally Kitchen and Mary Green; Absent: Sarah McKee
Sarah McKee e-mailed Jeri Fickes the morning of 8/11/14 to inform her that she intends to resign from her position of secretary effective immediately. She still had the remainder of 2014 and all of 2015 to fulfill her commitment. There are no provisions in the bylaws on how to replace an officer. It was decided among the board that we would ask for a volunteer to complete 2014, then we have someone on the ballot for 2015. This will keep us on the alternating year, two-year commitment for secretary and treasurer.
The board agreed that we would ask the membership to add a line in the budget for up to $300 for guest speakers. Jeri used the president’s line item, plus $50 to pay for the Tooleys in March. Barb Byler offered her $25 allowance to go towards that, if needed.
Jeri has tubs of materials for the quilt show. It is possible that Betty Boreman has materials also. It is recommended that the tubs be inventoried after the quilt show. Barry Jolliff has poles for the quilt show stored in his barn. Jeri will talk to Betty Boreman about the possibility of storing all items together (or Barry Jolliff).
It was mentioned that we need to ask for a volunteer for the finance committee.
8/11/14 club meeting
The meeting was called to order by Jeri Fickes at 7:00 p.m. The meeting started with our speaker, Cherie Baldner of Loudonville, who talked to us about antique half-dolls that she has collected. A very interesting hobby that started when she was given one and found out they were collectable.
People with August birthdays were recognized.
The sunshine committee mentioned Vicky Hartzler and the loss of her mother and also father- in-law. Laura Nolletti also suggested her mother be added.
Refreshment supplies are stored in a closet outside of the meeting room. It was announced that there were only two volunteers signed up for the September meeting and a volunteer was requested. Mabel Stocker volunteered to help Carol Remington and Karla Vogt.
The picnic committee was thanked again.
There were no corrections or additions to July minutes.
There is $4868.37 in the checking account.
It was announced that new members needing membership booklets get them from Naomi Lance.
Naomi Lance had the sign-up sheet for volunteering at the quilt show.
Volunteers were sought for the first baby of the year quilts. Janet McFarland and Krishia Garcia volunteered. Janet will make the quilt for the first baby boy and Sarah Bistline will quilt it. Krishia will make the quilt for the first baby girl and Kim Panter will quilt it. Mary Lou Nuzum made the quilt labels for both quilts.
Three time slots still needed to be filled for the Amish quilt show selling raffle tickets. These slots were filled easily.
Committee reports:
Laura Nolletti passed out two types of advertising for the quilt show. She also suggested that members advertise the quilt show on their facebook pages and “like” the pages about it that they see.
Fill out quilt entry forms for your projects and get them to Dot Anderson by the September meeting. One category has a lot of entries and will probably be divided into two separate categories.
There is a sign-up sheet for volunteering at the show. There are two classes that can be taken at no charge in exchange for volunteering during the show.
Mary Green will head up the boutique for the show. Items can be sold with a 10% commission going to the guild. A question was asked how to mark which items were yours. A solution will be decided and announced at the September meeting.
Descriptions for write-ups for quilt entries are expected.
No workshops or classes until after the show. The hand working group will be meeting September 4th. Bring your quilts to sew on sleeves.
There are over 20 people signed up for the retreat. Let Bonnie Krueger or Tonya Wellert know if you would like to pre-order a pattern.
Jim Rawdon made a motion that there be $300 designated in the budget for guest speakers’ charges or mileage. Laura Nolletti seconded it. There was no discussion. Motion passed.
PhD and regular show and tells were held.
Jeri Fickes gave a demonstration on board basting, learned from Sharon Schamber.
