July Neewsletter and June Minutes

The purpose of this organization shall be to create, stimulate, and maintain an interest in all matters pertaining to the making of quilts and to establish and promote educational endeavors through quilts.

Meeting: July 9, 6:00 PM

Parkview Christian Church

1912 Burbank Road

JULY MEETING: Celebrate Summer Guild Picnic

Yeah! It is our annual guild picnic! We always have such a good time….whether it is rainy and WINDY, hot and muggy, or just plain beautiful outside. If you haven’t been to the picnic meeting in awhile, please plan to attend. We begin at 6:00 pm and we meet at the pavilion of the First Church of God, 1953 Akron Road. Please bring a covered dish to share, your own table setting, and 3 fat quarters of fabric. See you there!!!

LIBRARY QUILT DISPLAY

Ruth Bishop has again volunteered to spearhead the effort to display TCQ quilts at the main library. Just in time to advertise the quilt show! Please consider contributing a quilt for the display. Ruth would like quilts of all sizes. Anyone that made a “Black and White Plus One” quilt for the last show…..these would make a great addition to the window! The display will be in the window between July 10 – August 13. **Please do not contribute a quilt you want to put in the show!

Quilts can be brought to the picnic. Or, plan to get them to Ruth on July 10. Anyone that can help from 1 – 4 on July 10 setting up the display, please give Ruth a call.

WORKSHOPS and TRIPS

QUILT SHOW CHALLENGE

You still have time to take a piece of “road” fabric and create a portion of the tree city Lincoln Highway mural! See Barb Byler at the next meeting. Fabric is free….you must supply the creativity. Your quilt must be 18 X 24 with a ROAD running somewhere through the quilt. More details are available with the fabric. Join your fellow guild members in their Lincoln Highway Travels through Tree City Country!

CIVIL WAR

Did you know that we are in the Sesquicentennial commemoration of our country's Civil War? That's just a fancy way of saying it's been 150 years since the Civil War. This commemoration will last for 3 years. There are some very beautiful Civil War replica fabrics in the stores. Why not choose to make a quilt and learn about our country’s history at the same time? Visit a battle field, museum, or historic house. Learn something about Ohio’s role in the Civil War. Quilts and quilters played a part in the war whether they were sending quilts with their soldiers, sending quilts to the hospitals, using quilts as signals on the Underground Railroad, and I’m sure in other ways. This is a good time to contemplate our history and make a quilt in remembrance.

KITCHEN KORNER

How about a couple fun, fast summer recipes for the upcoming holiday?

DILLY CAULIFLOWER SALAD

2 heads cauliflower

4 oz. Dijon mustard

1 cup mayonnaise

1/4 cup sour cream

1T +/- dried dill weed

4 green onions chopped to include greens

salt/pepper

Break cauliflower into small florets and cook in boiling water 2-3 minutes. Immediately blanch in cold water. Combine all other ingredients. Whisk until creamy. Toss gently. Chill before serving. Garnish with fresh dill or fresh parsley

VEGGIE SALAD

1 can small red beans, rinsed and drained

1 can white shoepeg corn, drained

1 zucchini, chopped

1 large tomato, seeded and chopped

1 green or yellow bell pepper chopped

1 small red onion, chopped

3 green onions chopped, to include tops

1 can (3.8oz) sliced olives, drained

1 cup Catalina salad dressing

1 1/2 cups shredded Cheddar

1 1/2 cups Fritos

In large bowl combine all but cheese and Fritos. Mix well. Just before serving gently stir in cheese and Fritos. Enjoy!

LEMON LUSH

1 cup plus 2 T. flour
1/2 cup margarine
1/2 cup chopped nuts
Mix all together and press in 9x11 greased pan. Bake at 350* for 20 minutes. COOL.
8 oz. cream cheese
1 cup powdered sugar
4 oz. (of an 8 oz tub) Cool Whip
Mix together and spread over cooled crust.
3 - 4-serving size instant Lemon Pudding
3 cups milk
Beat together and spread over cheese mix. Spread remaining 4 oz. Cool Whip over all. Top with another 1/2 cup chopped nuts. Chill until firm. (serves 12)

TIP OF THE MONTH: Mini Quilts

Because miniature quilts take less time to make, it allows you to try more patterns! For mini quilts, use scaled-down versions of “regular” tools – small scissors, 28-mm rotary cutter, 6” square ruler, 6X9 cutting mat, and a wooden iron instead of a full-size iron.

Use small-scale prints or tone-on-tone fabrics with a tight weave. Fabrics that ravel easily or a bulky are best saved for other projects.

RAFFLE QUILT

TCQ will be displaying our raffle quilt and selling tickets at Buehler’s Milltown store on July 27 and 28 between 10 and 4. Do you have time to sell tickets for a few hours? Please contact Ruth Bishop. In the meantime….please remember to get your quilt show flyers out around the county! Every store we enter should be asked if we can display a flyer.

QUILT SHOW

Wow! It is right around the corner! *** Please remember to bring your registration sheets to the July picnic!!! Sarah Bistline will also have the sign up sheets for working the show. Members are needed to assist with setting up the poles on Wednesday between 4:30 and 7:00. Husbands and tall, strong sons are also welcome! Coincidently, this is the same time you are to bring your quilts in and drop them off. Judging will take place on Thursday beginning at 9:00 am. The committee will be assisting the judge and hanging the show all day. If you are available, please come help! Friday and Saturday members are need to work the show manning the admission table, watching the quilts in the show, etc. Please take a few moments before or after (J) the picnic to volunteer a few hours and help during the show.

Yard signs will be distributed at the picnic. This is a major source of advertising for the show. If you can put a sign at a busy intersection, please take one!

Are you finishing your quilts for the show? If it is too hot for you to be outside…take advantage of the air conditioning and SEW!

Meeting: June 11, 7:00 PM

Parkview Christian Church

1912 Burbank Road

JUNE MEETING: How To Reduce Your Stash

Do you have a box, basket, bag or drawer full of scraps leftover from your quilt projects? Are you frustrated trying to locate that piece of blue fabric that you know you have, somewhere? Do you go to the quilt store to buy more fabric because your scraps are just not usable? Organizing your scraps can be the solution you are looking for. June’s guild program will be “How to Reduce Your Stash.” Mary Lou Nuzum will talk about scrap quilts and suggest ways to organize your scraps so they are retrievable and ready for use. She will explain about precutting squares and triangles so when you find the time to sew, your fabric is ready and waiting for you. She will also feature four easy to cut and easy to sew blocks that make great scrap quilts. After hearing this presentation, you can begin leisurely cutting up some of your scraps over the summer so you can come to the Scrap Quilt workshop on Saturday, September 15 ready to make one or more of these quilts.

JUNE REFRESHMENTS: Brought to you by…..

AMISH COUNTRY QUILT SHOW, BUCKEYE EVENTS

Tree City has been invited to have a booth at the upcoming Amish Country Quilt Show but we need your assistance to man the raffle ticket selling table. Time slots will be 10am – 12 noon, noon – 2:30, and 2:30 – 5 pm each day, June 7, 8, and 9. Anyone working at the booth will receive free admission to the show….now that’s a deal!

In addition to complimentary admission, the show committee has waived the intry fee for contest quilts and would be happy to accept any entries from our members in the quilt contest. If the members have quilts they would like to either show or enter into the contest at no charge, they can send Joyce an email or call toll-free at 800-249-3154. She needs to know the size and description of each quilt to include in the show information.

AVAILABLE FABRIC

Jeri recently was given information regarding fabric that needs to be cleaned out. A quilter has passed on and her husband would like to get rid of the fabric. If you are interested in finding out if he is selling or giving it away, his name is Steve and the number is 330-644-7804.

JULY PICNIC

Our guild picnic will be July 9 at 6 PM at the pavilion of the First Church of God at 1953 Akron Road. Please note that this is an hour earlier than usual. The theme will be “Celebrate Summer” so plan to have a fun evening eating, chatting and playing with other guild members. Each member is asked to bring a covered dish to share, table setting, and three fat quarters of fabric. Because of the outside venue, show and tell will be limited. If you have something that must be mailed or given away right after the picnic, please bring that to share. Otherwise, please hold show and tell for our August meeting. There is no challenge at this summer’s picnic because we hope all guild members will be busy finishing projects for the August quilt show, just food and fun. Plan to attend.

KITCHEN KORNER

SWEET POTATO SALAD

3-4 lbs sweet potatoes

Peel and cube. Cook in boiling, salted water until just fork-tender. Drain and cool somewhat.

Dressing:

1/4 cup olive oil

3T rice wine vinegar

salt/pepper

zest + juice from 1 small orange

2-3T pesto sauce (optional)

3 scallions, sliced thin diagonally

Pour all dressing ingredients in shaker and shake well. Gently toss into potatoes. Chill until ready to serve.

MARINATED GREEN BEANS WITH TOMATOES AND OLIVES

2 lbs fresh green beans, trimmed

1/4 cup olive oil

2 green onions, chopped to include greens

2T rice wine vinegar

1T chopped fresh oregano

salt/pepper

Cook green beans in large pot of salted, boiling water about 5-7 minutes until crisp/tender. Immediately drain and immerse in ice water. Drain and place back in pot.

Heat olive oil in skillet over medium. Saute garlic for 30 seconds. Remove skillet from heat and stir in all but feta cheese. Toss with beans. Pour beans with dressing into serving bowl and sprinkle feta over all. Chill 3 hours before serving.

TIP OF THE MONTH: Choosing fabrics

Let the basic design suggest colors, then search your stash for fabrics in the widest value range of those colors that can be pulled together. Don’t work too hard to match fabrics. Be a little bit spontaneous in choosing fabrics and have fun.

KITCHEN KORNER Here are a couple recipes for a lovely spring week.

VEGGIE SALAD 1 can kidney beans or small red beans, rinsed & drained 1 can white shoepeg corn, drained 1 zucchini, chopped 1 tomato, chopped 1 green pepper, chopped 1 red onion, chopped 6 green onions, chopped 1 can (3.8oz) sliced black olives, drained 1 cup Catalina salad dressing 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese 1½ cups Fritos In large bowl combine all but cheese and chips. Mix well, toss gently with cheese and chips and serve immediately.

SUPER-EASY PIE CRUST 2 3/4 cups sifted all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1/2 cup milk Mix flour and salt together. Pour milk and oil into one measuring cup, do not stir, and add all at once to flour. Stir with fork until mixed, and shape into 2 flat balls. Roll out each between 2 sheets of waxed paper. Before placing in the pie pan I lift off waxed paper from one side of crust. This allows paper to come off more easily when crust is in place. Gently replace paper and flip crust. Remove second side, then using the waxed paper for support, gently position crust in pie pan, carefully removing remaining waxed paper. Repeat with crust top.

STRAWBERRY GLAZE PIE 8T cornstarch 2 c. water dash salt 2 c. sugar Cook over med-high heat, stirring constantly, until quite thick. Add 1 box strawberry jello and stir well. Let cool then add 3 cups cleaned berries. Place in baked pie shell. Serve chilled with whipped cream.

FAVORITE CHICKEN 4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves 1/4 cup Dijon mustard 1/4 cup teriyaki sauce 4 green onions, chopped 1 can mushrooms, drained 1/4 cup bottled roasted red peppers, diced 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese Preheat oven to 400 degrees and line a 9x13" baking dish or pan with foil, spray foil with non-stick spray. Measure 1/4 cup mustard in a glass cup measure, add teriyaki sauce to make 1/2 cup total. Stir to blend and pour mixture over chicken in pan. Sprinkle with mushrooms, onions and red pepper. Bake uncovered for 25 minutes; remove from oven and sprinkle with cheese; bake for 10 more minutes or until chicken is done

TIP OF THE MONTH: Use threads of different colors in the needles and bobbin. Then if your seam pulls or bunches, it’s easy to determine if the tension problem lies with the top or bottom thread. Regarding design: if your design is for a more formal quilt, use a crisp contrast. If you are sewing a cuddle-up quilt, use fabrics with less contrast.

QUILT SERVICES Quilting by the Mill, Sarah Bistline, 10368 Old Mill RD, Spencer, Ohio 44275, 330-667-2257 or 330-606-6609, www.quiltingbythemill.com. With this unseasonably warm weather, get your gardens ready but be very careful about planting too early. This is still Ohio and a freeze could still come! I have my herbs started inside just waiting for some yummy vegetables to cook with this summer!

TIP OF THE MONTH: Try new ideas, tools, and techniques to stay updated in the craft!

Sew Very Smooth: many of you will remember or already use the trick Shirley Stutz taught: cut a ¼ thick strip of masking tape about 6inches long and tape it along your machine. Use this edge when sewing as an edge for your fabric. This keeps all your seams uniform, helps us not to strain our older eyes, and keeps chaining moving right along. WELL, BIG NEWS!! A very enterprising woman has now manufactured a product called sew very smooth. It is a white piece of plastic that is sticky on one side. Place it down with the edge where you want it, push down and it is stuck in place for you to use as an edge. The best thin about it? You can pull it up and re-position it hundreds of times! When it no longer sticks, it is washable! Comes in lengths ranging from 2 inches to 18 inches.(?) Check out the web site: www.sewverysmooth.com

Second, have you heard of the “Edge Perfect Blade”? this is a new rotary blade for anyone that likes to embellish with a blanket stitch, ribbon, beads, anything! This blade cuts a dotted line for you to then fill with ribbon, embroidery thread, etc. It is way cool and not very expensive! Check it out: www.edgeperfectblade.com

KITCHEN KORNER

From Cassie: In a large heavy duty plastic zip lock bag mix one package ANGEL FOOD CAKE mix and one package ANY OTHER REGULAR CAKE MIX (not angel food). Squish it together with your hands. Take out 3 tablespoons of mix, place in small glass bowl (1 cup at least). Add 2 tablespoons water and mix with a whisk. Do not grease bowl. Put into microwave for ONE minute. Remove using pot holder and invert over serving plate. Let cool before eating. (we didn't and got burned). Can be served with fruit, whip cream or is fine just plain. I used a milk chocolate regular cake mix and the smell drove the kids wild. The recipe is known as 3, 2, 1 wonder. It is just right when you want just a little something sweet.

Corn & Bean tortilla Casserole

1 pkg. 12 corn tortillas

1 c shredded cheddar cheese

1 onion rough chopped

12 oz pkg frozen corn

1 cup matchstick carrots

1 can black beans, rinsed and drained

8 oz fat free ricotta cheese

4 oz fat free yogurt

2 cans green enchilada sauce

In 9X13 pan, pour enough enchilada sauce to coat the bottom. Quarter 4 of the corn tortillas and lay them out over the bottom of the pan, on top of the sauce. In separate bowl, mix together corn, beans, onions and carrots. Spread half of this veggie mixture over the tortillas. Sprinkle this with 1/3 cup of shredded cheese. Mix ricotta and yogurt together and spread half over the casserole. Repeat with more quartered tortillas, the rest of the can of enchilada sauce, the rest of the veggies, 1/3 cup shredded cheese and then the rest of the ricotta mixture. Top with remaining 4 tortillas quartered and remaining shredded cheese. Pour half the second can of enchilada sauce (or salsa of your choice) over all. Cover with foil sprayed with Pam and bake at 400* for this, you can sauté burger or shredded chicken and mix with taco seasoning, then layer it on top of each of the first 2 layers of tortillas.

CHEESY RICE CASSEROLE

2 1/2 C cooked brown rice
3 green onions, chopped
1 C lowfat cottage cheese
1 tsp dillweed
1/4 C Parmesan Cheese, grated
1/2 C Lowfat Milk
Combine all ingredients in large bowl. Pour into a lightly greased casserole. Bake in a 350-degree oven for 15 to 20 minutes.

TIP OF THE MONTH:

A magnet kept near your sewing machine helps with locating dropped pins before your feet find them!

ONE BLOCK WONDER WORKSHOP

Sarah Bistline has graciously consented to order the books and rulers needed for this class. Jeri will have a sign up list ready at the meeting. Anyone interested in purchasing these supplies should be on the list and paid by April 1.

Janet made correction to January minutes adding the last name Ralston to our guest from NEORQC.

Treasurer Naomi Lance reported a balance of $1427.49.

Committee Reports:

Ruth Bishop and Mable Stocker attended the fair board meeting and presented our requests to them for more space in the Buss Building. They reported that the board was respectful and listened to their ideas, but they had no questions. It is not clear if any progress was made. The board will meet again in April to go thru the building. Guild members are encouraged to attend.

Jane Richardson will conduct a workshop on a reversible table runner Feb. 25 from 9-3 at the Church building.

Barb Byler will place by-laws correction in the next newsletter

Vicky Hartzler gave a presentation on the Retreat for 2012. The committee is looking for a less expensive option. There was discussion of responses to the survey from the last retreat. We need more participants. The instructors for the next retreat will be Janet Andrews and Judy Smith. There can be a maximum of 35 people. The date will be April 5-6-7, 2013. Vicky made a motion that the guild subsidize the retreat up to $2000. Laura Nolletti seconded the motion. After discussion a vote was taken and majority ruled. Motion passed. Ruth Bishop questioned the benefit of the retreat to the guild since not very many participated. Laura Nolletti commented that everyone had the same opportunity to attend but some chose not to.

Sara Bistline gave a presentation on our upcoming quilt show. August 10&11, 2012. The name of the quilt show will be JOYFUL QUILTS. She passed around ballots for a vote on the wording on quilt raffle tickets. It was a yes or no vote that the tickets will not state where the proceeds are going. Just the quilt show name, date of show and drawing date for the raffle. Yes votes were in the majority.

There will be a boutique where members can sell items. 10% of the sale will go the guild treasury.

There will be a challenge “Lincoln Highway Runs through Tree City Country”

Each member was given a fat eighth of black fabric to be used for the road and asked to create a scene from anywhere along the route to hang at our quilt show.

New Business:

Ruth Bishop has had a request from the library to put up another display. She asked for items to add to the display and said she would take charge of it again.

It was decided we should have a table at the Dalton Quilt Show in June where we can display our raffle quilt and sell tickets. Janet McFarland to call and find out about that.

Cassie reminded us about the auction in May and asked for volunteers for recorders. We will need 3 or 4 plus our treasurer.

Program: Sally Kitchen presented a variety of heart shaped blocks and has put together a heart block swap. A sign up sheet was passed around. However many sign up will be responsible to make that many 6 ½” quilt blocks with a pink/red heart on white background.

KITCHEN KORNER

Pecan Topped Baked White Fish

2 – 4 fish fillets

3 Tbl butter + 3-4 Tbl olive oil

1 stalk celery, chopped fine

1 small onion, chopped fine

4 oz. fresh mushrooms, chopped

¼ cup finely chopped carrot

Salt & pepper

¾ cupped chopped pecans

1 tsp cayenne pepper

1 Tbl paprika

In casserole dish melt butter with olive oil in microwave until just melted. Stir together. Add chopped celery, onion, mushrooms and carrots. Add salt and pepper to taste. Toss all together to coat all the vegetables. Add fish fillets or steaks and carefully turn to cover with butter/veggie mixture. Top the prepared fish with chopped pecans and sprinkle evenly with cayenne and paprika. Cover, leaving 2 vents (I placed the lid on askew) and bake at 350* for 20-30 minutes, depending on thickness of the fish. Uncover and bake 10 more minutes.

ROASTED RED PEPPER SPREAD ~

2 - 12oz jars roasted red peppers, do not discard liquid

6 oz goat cheese

1/2 cup pine nuts (I used half pumpkin seeds and half sunflower seeds)

1 cup chopped escarole or spinach or fresh basil (depends on season and availability)

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

On cookie sheet, toss together seeds or nuts and about 1T Parmesan. Toast lightly. In baking dish sprayed with cooking spray, make two layers of roasted red peppers (cut into small strips), then escarole or basil, then seeds or nuts, then goat cheese. Drizzle liquid remaining in ONE of the roasted red pepper jars over all, then top with remaining grated Parmesan cheese. Bake at 375* for 10-12 minutes. You can garnish all with chopped tomatoes and chopped black olives. Serve with crackers or crusty bread.

EASY BEEF STROGANOFF

1 ½ lbs lean ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
1 cup skim milk
3T flour
½ cup Parmesan cheese
½ cup white wine
8 oz fresh mushrooms, sliced
½ tsp oregano
In large skillet sauté ground beef and onion. Drain. In small saucepan thicken milk with flour, stirring constantly over medium heat. Add cheese, wine, mushrooms, oregano, plus salt and pepper to taste. Stir until smooth and add to meat mixture. Heat through and serve over cooked noodles or rice.

FAVORITE CHICKEN

4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves
1/4 cup Dijon mustard
1/4 cup teriyaki sauce
4 green onions, chopped
1 can mushrooms, drained
1/4 cup bottled roasted red peppers, diced
1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
Preheat oven to 400 degrees and line a 9x13 baking dish or pan with foil, spray foil with non-stick spray. Measure 1/4 cup mustard in a glass cup measure, add teriyaki sauce to make 1/2 cup total. Stir to blend and pour mixture over chicken in pan. Sprinkle with mushrooms, onions and red pepper. Bake uncovered for 25 minutes; remove from oven and sprinkle with cheese; bake for 10 more minutes or until chicken is done.

TIP OF THE MONTH:

Carrying a 3 X 5 card in your purse or wallet with handy information can save you time and frustration. One piece of information I regularly carry with me are common quilt sizes.

Bed Size (mattress) Comforter Coverlet/Bedspread

Twin (38x75) 66” x 89” 80” x 108”

Long Twin (38x80) 66” x 94” 80” x113”

Double (54 x 75) 82” x 89” 96” x 108”

Long Double (54x80) 82” x 94” 96” x 113”

Queen (60x80) 88” x 94” 102” x 113”

King (76x80) 104” x 94” 118” x 113”

California King (72x84) 100” x 98” 114” x 117”

Comforter dimensions include a 14” drop on the sides and bottom without extra for the pillow tuck. A comforter is designed for use with a dust ruffle and pillow shams.

Coverlet/Bedspread dimensions include a 21” drop on the sides and bottom and 12 “ for the pillow tuck.

Moderate to heavy quilting may shrink a quilt 1 – 3 inches. Consider this shrinkage when planning your finished size.
