TREE CITY QUILT GUILD SCHEDULED TO DEMO 

at Wayne County Fair, Grange Rotunda Building

Wednesday September 12. 2018

From 1:00 to 2:30pm 

The theme this year is "Show and Tell".  Need members to show and share how their quilts were made etc. and suggest gadgets or skills/shortcuts that would help beginners.    My favorite part of our meetings is show and tell and this would be easy for most of us to just talk about our quilts.  Would give those in the audience also chance to share a quilt memory.  Also want to give out five community quilts to those present for someone in need.  

Please note that the October Hand Workers will be on second Friday, Oct. 12,

 from 9 to noon. 

The Monthly Ongoing Hand Workers will meet on the first Friday of each month from 9:00 to 11:50 at Parkview Christian Church, in the Fireside Room.  Meeting dates for 2018: Jan 5, 

Feb. 2, March 2, April 6, May 4, June 1 July 6, Aug. 3, Sept 7, Oct. 12, Nov. 2,and Dec 7.  (These dates are subject to change)  Join us and bring your handwork of any kind (no sewing machines) a small snack to share, and show and tell.  Guests are always welcome.  Contact Sally Kitchen at 330-345-5702 with any questions.

July Monthly Meeting Minutes 8/13/2018

•   Kay welcomed us all – we began with a program by Deb Allen of Polka dot Pincushion. Then on to our normal round of business.
•   We celebrated July birthdays: we have 7 members born this month (including a new member!) Each member in attendance shared when they best like to quilt: responses include late at night, middle of the night, mid-morning to middle afternoon.
•   Thanks to the refreshments committee for the evening’s treats, and to those who have volunteered for next month.
•   56 members attended the meeting, including visitors from Holmes County, who took a class taught by Jeri Fickes, and a friend of Frank’s from Wadsworth. We also welcomed a new member, Kathryn Gies of Wellington, at last month’s picnic.
  Reporting:

•   Secretary’s report: no minutes for July due to picnic. June’s minutes were approved as written.
•   Treasurer’s reports for July & August were presented by Bev Fash, filed for audit & approved as
  submitted.
•   Sunshine Committee: Denise Schneider received a card.
•   2020 Quilt Show: Jeri reported on the 2020 show, scheduled for 4/17 & 4/18. Theme: America
  the Beautiful. Challenges: Quilt of Valor (Jeri will have a rep come to share the story of the organization with us), and a free-form interpretation of America the Beautiful. Will do Harbor Lighthouse as our raffle quilt. If you’re interested in helping select fabrics for the quilt, the teamwill meet at Somewhere Sewing on 9/5, at 10:00 AM. Laura’s heading up that group.
•   Community Service Update: note a couple of needs - Ruth asks for 5 throw-sized quilts to give away at the Wayne County Fair next month. We’re doing show & tell on Wednesday & can usevolunteers to share their projects. Hospice of Wooster also needs lap quilts.
•   Christmas Party: still planning. More info in September.
•   1st baby of the new year quilts: have 2 boy quilts (Kay, Vera), 2 girls (Janet & Frank)
  New Business: please read & consider any need for change to the proposed new language for Article 5.We’d continue to vote on the treasurer for each term. Hope that anyone interested in running for an office will speak up & offer their services. Jane Richardson has agreed to be chairman of the Nominating Committee. Please let her know if you have an interest in becoming VP, Treasurer or Member at Large. Voting on change to bylaws will occur at September meeting.
  Volunteer opportunity: We have 3 beautiful quilts belonging to the guild & need someone to take charge of the pieces – need someone to take ownership to bring the items to guild meetings, shows, etc. Stacey volunteered to take ownership.

Let Mary Mahoney know if you’d like to teach a class. Note that teachers are responsible for informingBev of the $30 payment we’ll make to the church for the use of the facility. Meanwhile, here’s thecurrent schedule.

9/22 & 9/23	Somewhere Sewing Retreat	Open sew	9:00 AM Saturday through EOD. 8:30 AM Sunday.	Attendance - $10/day. Pick a day to bring a dish to share. Need payment by the September meeting. Checks payable to Kay. Consider carpooling.
9/29	Animal Expressions	Laura Noletti		Laura will be teaching an animal pattern 9/29 – can do prep at Somewhere Sewing. Multiple animal images available are available. This is a paper piecing project. If new to the art, choose the owl, or the elephant. Violet Craft designs. You’ll need to order your own patterns – through Becky or at Shiloh. 10/11	Bus trip	Sarah Bistline	7 AM – 6:30 PM	We’ll attend Robert Appell’s presentation at Quilting at the Bayfront (Erie, PA). Lecture at 10:30. Vendors, lunch at your discretion (box, concessions, restaurant). $65 covers bus, Rob & quilt show. Sarah reserved a small bus – 20 seats left. Need to know if you’reinterested by September 24.Bus departs from Buehler’s and from Burbank outlet mall.

Tips & tricks: Last month Betty a cool tip at the end of last meeting – don’t know if everyone heard it sohere it is: use 3M first aid tape on the back of rotary cutting rulers to prevent slips. You can get it wherever first aid products are sold, and it only costs a couple of dollars.
Program: Mary Mahoney introduced Polka Dot Pincushion (Richfield) – Debbie & Pam. The store opened in 2005 & has much more space for classes now. Here’s contact information:

Drawing was held for fabric bundles throughout the course of the presentation.
Debbie brought things that are new to the shop, mainly Christmas tonight. Block of the Month is also a specialty of the shop – Halloween, girl-power, Dear Jane (small, complex blocks – second Monday of the month).
Other events: Creative Grids Penny Heron projects. Workshops are “play before you pay.” AlternateFlying Geese & Log Cabin tools were popular. 40 quilts + in trunk show. Tree classes, coloring & mock- tails coming up (see the web site for dates.)
Moda Restore Retreat gave shop owners a chance to get started on projects as fabric arrives. Merry Makers shares lots of cool Christmas projects. Stitches from the Yuletide – neat pendant necklaces, wool-backed. Cording made with reel-like tool & embroidery floss. Ornaments take only a few hours to create.
Charming Shop Hop starts this Thursday, runs through the following Saturday. NEOROC get-away weekend is first prize. 2 buses, one leaves 8/23 and heads south, the other Thursday & heads north. $5 passport. Your bag entitles you to 10% discount after the hop through 8/1/2019.
The shop has lots of baby & children’s, primitive & Civil War, precuts, dabble in modern, etc.
Look for Souper Bowl Sunday, Flip Flops Flames & Fa-la-la (free events – open sew.) Also support shelters for homeless moms & kids. Delivered 100+ packages recently.
The meeting concluded with Show & Tell.

•   Members shared the Mystery Squares they’ve made. Dates are set in August/September for workshops to put the Mystery Quilts together.
•   Monster Blocks were shared. We’ll assemble a quilt at the workshops described above.
•   Made fabric: Judy turned in the made cloth she created.
