Happy MaySpring has sprung and gave us a beautiful week-end for our quilt show. THANK YOU to everyone for making our quilt show a huge success. Congratulations to Frank Meshew, the winner of our beautiful raffle quilt. We will have a special "Show and Tell" of all the Viewer's Choice Awards.We have two workshops in May with Laura Nolletti teaching "Convex Illusions" on May 12th and the "Love Your Featherweight" on May 19th. Attending a workshop or retreat is a good way to get to know the other members of your guild, learn something new and have some fun.Please continue with the Mystery Envelopes and the "Made Fabric". The Mystery Envelopes have been replenished and are ready for you.Happy Quilting, Kay

April Monthly Meeting Minutes

Introduction:
Kay welcomed us all, including new member Denise Snyder and Kathie Reid. 57 members attended this evening.
We celebrated April birthdays - birthday celebrants shared their favorite quilt patterns or blocks. 8 of our members have an April birthday.
Kay reminded the group that if you are on the refreshment committee for a given month, you must be sure the carpet is swept before you leave. If you need assistance in getting this done, let Sally or another committee member know in advance. Additional volunteers for refreshments for June & August meetings were recruited.
Kay shared a thank you note we received from Lunn Fabrics for our donation to the Ganesa Study Center. You can learn more about the Study Center at http://ganesastudycenter.org/
Reporting:
Secretary’s minutes were approved as submitted. Mary apologizes for the delay in getting the document out – so sorry for the inconvenience. L
Treasurer’s report was presented by Bev Fash & approved as submitted.
Sunshine Committee: Gwen shared activity over the month – four members were contacted. In addition to Committee support to members, do feel free to make individual contact with members needing a boost.
Upcoming Activities & Classes:
Quilt Show: The big event is here! A few last minute reminders:
· Quilt Intake: Wednesday, April 18, 5 – 8 p.m. Entry forms are due tonight (4/9). The team will be meeting to work on space allocation on Wednesday (4/11) – MUST have forms by Tuesday night (4/10 - e-mail).
· Set-up: Thursday, 4/19. Will need physical assistance in getting everything up & ready.
· Volunteering in any way will provide you free admittance to the show. Be sure to wear a white shirt & your guild name tag while volunteering.
· Raffle Ticket Sales: thanks to all who worked at the IX Center – Thursday/Friday, sold over $500 in raffle tickets. In all, we’ve sold $3,000 in raffle tickets. There’s a link on the TCQG Facebook page to the show/raffle quilt – feel free to share it on your own social media accounts – it’s having a real impact on ticket sales.
· Boutique Contributions: If you’re contributing to the boutique, package carefully, with yardage & pricing information and your name. You’ll need to sign a seller’s agreement and a list of what you are contributing when you drop your things off on Wednesday, April 18.
· Thank You!: Committee members were acknowledged for all the effort put into the show. It takes a great deal of commitment to build a successful show!
· Other Forms of Volunteering: Becky Hamilton is responsible for overseeing vendor demos – if you’re working at the show & have some down time, please come & observe the demos out of respect for the vendor. Also need donations for our raffle gift basket – small things, preferably new. (Thread, pins, books, small rulers…) The basket will be awarded to a person voting for viewer’s choice. Anyone voting for viewer’s choice is eligible to win.

Other Activities:
Pins & Needles: we have the opportunity to get a free machine for the guild if 20 of us participate in an overview/demo of machines available at Pins & Needles in Middleburg Heights. Sarah Bistline has been working with the shop to coordinate the event on Wednesday, 5/23, from 11:00 – 3:00. In previous meetings, we’d talked about carpooling from Lodi. Please let Sarah know if you can participate.
Guild Picnic: this year’s challenge is Garden Party – use anything associated with garden (fruit, veg, garden tool fabric. Garden apron projects….) Date TBD
Edgewood Schools Wellness Day: we’ve been asked to participate in the last-day-of-school wellness day. We’d have just a short window to work with the students, so we need a quick project like comparing teddy bears & quilts – the comfort they provide. Give each child a small teddy bear & have them embellish it. May 25. Details to follow – let Kay know if you’re willing to help.
Made Fabric: Thanks to those who have worked their scraps into made fabric. In upcoming meetings, we’ll look at making “made fabric” into a project, so don’t stop piecing!
Challenges:
Continue to pursue the three challenges set for us for the year (described below). This month we shared our second mystery block & our first Monster Blocks as well.
· Challenge 1 - Mystery Blocks: Kay expressed heartfelt appreciation for all those who are contributing to the Mystery Square project – we already have enough blocks to make 3 quilts!
Overall instructions: Kay provided manila envelopes with instructions & color specifications for a block. The idea is to do something you hadn’t tried before or something you might not choose for yourself. Bring the completed square & the envelope back and the pattern will be passed on to someone else. When we have enough squares, we’ll make quilts for the veteran’s home (12 blocks per quilt). You’ll get a token for each block you complete. Turn your tokens in in November, prize in December. You must use the 3 colors prescribed, and you can then add one other color as accents. Final dimension: 12 ½” squares. You can bring your square/envelope back whenever you finish – you can turn one in & pick up another each month, or contribute less frequently if you like.
· Challenge 2: Monster Quilt (Applique): Kay provided a sheet with monster parts – make your own square. No color limitations. Check out Monster Quilts on line (Shiny Happy World or other sites) & put your own twist on what you see. Make a block & bring it in. 13” start for 12 ½” square. Background = color of your choice.
· Challenge 3: Portrait Quilt – create a picture quilt of a person or a building/landscape using small squares/pieces of different tonal value. You must provide a picture of whatever image you’re creating for comparison. Carpenter’s Cup in Smithville has an interesting example (picture of bistro made up of small squares.) You get a token for your little bag (a big token!) for completing this challenge. Should be at least 36” – want it to be free-flowing, not tedious.
Program: Jeri Fickes introduced Deb Ramsey, designer, quilter & inspiration to us all.
· Deb explained that she does few challenge quilts, preferring to work on the project as it speaks to her, but showed some lovely examples that arose from challenges.
· She uses “errors” as opportunities to grow (ex: label completion on Cardinal quilt.)
· She shared her Redwork Challenge, one she presented to the guild when she was a member as an opportunity to explore this technique. This was a project that allowed for creative sashing/bordering.
· Deb shared an applique quilt that illustrates how to add depth to your work. Note that you may gain more from technique points in a class than from the formal subject of the class.
· Consider designing your quilting patterns by doodling, eyes closed & draw what you’re imagining, rather than starting out too literally.
· Consider fabric painting, couching, embellishment to amp up your projects.
· Machine quilting has allowed Debby to complete projects herself that otherwise might not have gotten done. Began machine quilting in 2012.
· Consider using clip art as an inspiration – pick an image & search for clip art – check out frogs as an example.
· Also inspired by greeting cards, images in books, cross stitch designs, Pinterest, etc.
· Consider what you see when you look at your quilts from 6 yards, 6 feet, 6 inches – different features should stand out.
· If you choose to color on fabric, consider using Prismacolor pencils rather than crayon for a more nuanced effect. You can learn more about these products at http://www.prismacolor.com/

2018 QUILT SHOW - Comments
The quilt show was a great success! Thank you to everyone who had a part in it no matter how big or small (nothing was really small!), whether you were working on the committee, entering quilts, working on the raffle quilt, selling raffle tickets,handing out bookmarks, sharing posts on facebook, working during the show, or just telling friends and family about the show! Like raising a child, it takes a village! We had a total of 462 paid admissions. Viewer's Choice awards will be given at May guild meeting. Be sure to attend! Positive comments were received by both vendors and attendees!
The success of the show was due to all of our members; but we had a wonderful quilt show committee! It's not too soon to start on our 2020 show! There will be a sign up sheet at our May meeting! Please consider joining the committee!

Ya know what's left after a successful quilt show? Housework!!!!! Yikes!
After seeing how quickly this guild & their generous hubbies tore down our show: I invite you all to my house, figure it will take 10 minutes to clean it. Then we can sit n sew together getting ready for the next show!
Betty Boreman said we should have someone film our tear down . Luv that idea, it would be so cool to see that speeded up! Everyone worked so quickly & automatically helped out wherever needed. I'm thrilled to be apart of this guild!
What an enjoyable show. Had a great time not only "supporting " our vendors & viewing your quilts but getting the chance to work with more of you and just hanging out at the boutique or admission table enjoying your company.
