PRESIDENT’S GREETING:
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Quilters! Another year has zoomed past us with many projects finished and many more on our list to do. This coming year is our 25th year as a guild and as I reflect back it’s been 17 years since I was president, Wow. The 25th year anniversary planning committee has been planning some fun things for us in the coming year. And there will be some challenges and quilty fun as usual. I am looking forward to helping the guild in the next year. In Stitches, Sarah Bistline

HISTORY HUTCH
2017 is the 25th year since the creation of Tree City Quilters’ Guild. How much do you know about your guild?
Do you know why the group of ladies came together and formed the guild? Do you recognize the ladies in the guild that are the charter members? Make it a point to know who they are and find out the answer to these questions and others that will come your way throughout this year.
TIPS AND TRICKS
Take some time right now to plan your year of quilting. What gifts would you like to give? Do you have some stash fabrics that you could make up a couple table runners or tote bags for unexpected gifts to give this year? Make up a couple sets of coasters and snap bags for a quick gift, too.
Now is the time to give your machine a thorough cleaning. Take apart your bobbin case and take the bottom off your machine. Make sure your clean all the lint out, change your needle, and oil if you have a machine that needs you to do that. Is there a technique you would like to learn? A skill you want to try? Do you know someone in the guild that could show or teach you? Or, is there a local shop where you could take a class? Plan your year and work your plan. You and your sewing will thank you at the end of a productive year!!

KITCHEN KORNER
Vegetable Soup: perfect for the January cold!!
4 tablespoons olive oi
2 cups chopped leeks, white part only (from approximately 3 medium leeks) or onion
2 tablespoons finely minced garlic
Kosher salt
2 cups carrots, peeled and chopped into rounds (approximately 2 medium)
2 cups peeled and diced potatoes
2 cups fresh green beans, broken or cut into 3/4-inch pieces
2 quarts chicken or vegetable broth
4 cups peeled, seeded, and chopped tomatoes
2 ears corn, kernels removed
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup packed, chopped fresh parsley leaves
1 to 2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
Heat the olive oil in large, heavy-bottomed stockpot over medium-low heat. Once hot, add the leeks, garlic, and a pinch of salt and sweat until they begin to soften, approximately 7 to 8 minutes. Add the carrots, potatoes, and green beans and continue to cook for 4 to 5 more minutes, stirring occasionally.
Add the stock, increase the heat to high, and bring to a simmer. Once simmering, add the tomatoes, corn kernels, and pepper. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook until the vegetables are fork tender, approximately 25 to 30 minutes. Remove from heat and add the parsley and lemon juice. Season, to taste, with kosher salt. Serve immediately.
TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS QUILTERS STYLE
Twas the night before Christmas
And all thru the guild
All our members were scurrying
Their quilts they must build.
The blocks are all pieced
Back and batting in place
So much to do
It feels like a race!
The year went so fast
As quick as a flash
And Sally challenged us
To use up our stash.
Quilt Show, Bus Trip
And workshops, too
Our guild always gives us
Fun things to do.
Now Betty, now Ruth, now Kevin and Jeri
On Shirley, on Vicki, Lou Ella and Mary
To the head of the class and stand up tall
Stitch away, stitch away, stitch away all!
While visions of projects dance in my head
With needles, fabric, rulers and thread
Measure, cut, layer and bind
A trip to the quilt shop more fabric to find.
We all look forward to a brand new year
With Sarah to lead us and keep us in gear
Committees and meetings for us to attend
There’s nothing better than a quilting friend!
Friendship, sharing, learning and giving
These are some things that make life worth living
Merry Christmas to you as the day draws near
And we wish you a healthy and Happy New Year!!
ACCUCUT
