MEETING:
Sewing
Straw Hats
How many of you
are aware that our very own Sarah
McKee is involved with
re-enacting? Sarah does quite a bit of
sewing to make her period correct clothing.
Plus, accessories! Sarah will be
showing us how to sew our own straw hats.
See you there!
National
Quilt Association
At the January meeting our
membership voted that the Tree City Quilters will join the National Quilting
Association as a chapter. One of requirements of the NQA to become a chapter
member is that there are at least five individual members who belong to the
chapter. If you are a member of the NQA, please e-mail Jeri Fickes
(fickes@sssnet.com) or call her (330-201-0932) with your NQA membership number
so she can complete the chapter application. Thank you.

TCQ SPRING
RETREAT
You may not believe that
kit is coming, but Spring will soon be here and with it….the TCQ Retreat! What a wonderful time has been planned with
great instructors and tons of fun! Even
if you cannot sew all weekend, plan to attend the trunk show and lecture with
Janet Andrews Saturday, April 6 at 7:00.
You could also come for dinner!
The lecture and trunk show is free for Tree City Quilters. Take advantage of this opportunity and have
some fun at the same time.
It was agreed at the
January meeting that we would make pillowcases to donate to local children who
are in need in the memory/honor of the students from Sandy Hook Elementary in
Newtown , Ct. Janet McFarland and Jeri Fickes will be
leading a workshop/workday in the near future to make as many pillowcases as
possible, with an ultimate goal of 500. We can do this! Many hands make light work! That being
said,
we will need as many hands as possible (and fabric donations—Jeri has a friend at work who would like to donate money to buy fabric--I'm sure we can get other financial donations as well, in addition to digging into our own stash). We will need people to cut, pin, sew, turn tubes (you'll see what this is) and iron. More information will be coming!

TIP OF THE MONTH:
- Do you ever get
confused with multiple sizes and fabrics to cut? Before you start, transfer all your cutting
directions for each fabric, onto a dry erase board. Prop the board near you. As you cut each fabric and each size/piece,
erase the board. Confusion
eliminated!
- Do you have a
tangled mess every time you want to use your safety pins for basting? Store your pins on long, knitting, stitch
holders…available in many sizes in knitting department. These holders resemble safety pins and will
hold your pins open and ready to use in a neat, orderly manner!

is interested, even the slightest bit, please get their name and contact
information and send it to us and we will contact them. 3) Ask the person responsible for your
guild's newsletter to put the above information in every month through January
2013.

QUILTS OF
VALOR
Hi. I'm the State
Coordinator for the Quilts of Valor Foundation in Ohio . Quilts of Valor's
mission is to cover ALL combat service members and veterans touched by war with
comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. This foundation is not about politics;
it's about people. We get requests for
quilts in three ways:
1. Requests made on our website for individuals. These are usually requested by family members.
2. Small group requests. Right now QOVF Ohio is working on supplying 25 quilts for a veteran's retreat in the spring inDayton .
3. Standing requests for quilts to go toGermany and Afghanistan . They request hundreds
of quilts a month for injured service people and we aren't able to fill all the
need.
There are several ways that your guild could help.
1. Let members know about the group so they can donate quilts if they are interested. If they just want to make the tops, we have volunteer long arm quilters who will quilt the tops. Some guilds have sewing days to make tops.
2. Have a block donation at a meeting. Everyone can donate a block to be made into quilt tops. You can sew the tops together or just send the blocks to me.
3. We accept donations of fabrics especially in red, white, and blue.
These quilts are greatly appreciated by the service members and veterans who receive them. They are touched that someone cared enough about them and their sacrifices to make them a quilt.
For more information about Quilts of Valor, including the specifications for the quilts please visit http://www.qovf.org.
Quilts of ValorOhio has a new page at https://www.facebook.com/QuiltsOfValorOhio. I am also happy
to answer any questions that you may have.
Thank you for helping me spread the word about Quilts of Valor, Heather Raynack, State Coordinator; Quilts of

Jeri Fickes spoke to us
about a project she wanted to do for the school children affected by the
shootings at Sandy Hook schools in Connecticut .
After getting in touch with the school she found they do not have a need
and was asked that we go forward with the project and make a presentation to
local children in honor of the children at Sandy
Hook . After discussion we
decided to make pillow cases for local agencies. Jeri & Janet will come up with a plan and
possible work day.
Jeri also asked if the
guild would like to become a member of NQA (National Quilters Association). Benefits include: access to insurance
coverage for our quilt show, ribbons at a lower cost, Quilting quarterly
magazine and free advertisement for our quilt show, retreats etc. Cost is $45 for two years. Jeri made a motion that we join NQA, Laura
Noletti seconded the motion – motion passed.
Sign up sheet was
circulated during the meeting for our next quilt show committee. Laura Noletti is the chair person. She announced that the first committee
meeting will be January 28th at 7PM at the Wayne County
Library.
Program was presented by
Barb Byler. She told us about a pizza
box challenge. Those participating will
made a 12 ½” center medallion quilt square.
She showed samples of what that might be and what to include in the pizza
box. The challenge lasts until
July. Each month your box will be passed
on to another member and a border added to your block. You will end up with your own block at the
end. More information and instruction
sheets will be available at the next meeting.
