MEMBERSHIP DUES

Hard to believe but it is time to begin looking ahead to next year.  According to our bylaws, membership dues are to be paid by the first meeting in January to be included in the new directory.  However, it is always better to have them paid and distribute the new booklet in December……so you know what’s coming in January!   It’s time to think about getting dues collected.

2014 QUILT SHOW

We are searching for someone that has the skills to paint advertising signs for the guild.  These are sandwich style boards, 2 of them, to be set out for the public.  Does anyone letter or paint?  Do you know someone that might be able to help us?  Please contact Laura Noletti.

Have you begun one of the challenges for the show yet?  Don’t wait too long!!!  Inspiration can be found all around you!  Challenges for the show will be

1.  A City-scape that could be a city skyline; a "city" view including a scene from above; a close up of an event or location, etc.  These quilts must be 120 inches total perimeter or less.  This means they must measure 120" or less all around.  For example, a 30 by 30 quilt would be a maximum size square.  The measurement of all sides must add up to 120 or less. 

2.  Shades of Blue - This project must be at least 50% blue (backing does not count).  This perimeter limit is 200 inches.  It can be clothing, home decoration, quilt, bag, wallhanging, etc. Clothing, bags, and other like Items do not have size limits.

QUILT SHOWS

September 12 – 14; Amish Country Quilt Show

$7.00 admission, 10 – 5 daily, located at the Buckeye Event Center

 

KITCHEN KORNER

BLUEBERRY CHICKEN SALAD

Rotisserie chicken or left over grilled chicken - 2 cups chopped
2 ribs celery, chopped
2 green onions, chopped
1 Granny Smith apple, chopped
1 one-serving container of lemon yogurt
¼ C mayonnaise
2 T milk
½ sweet red pepper, diced
2 cups fresh, clean blueberries
1 cup orzo pasta, cooked al-dente and drained
Mix all thoroughly and gently in large bowl. Chill. Serve over lettuce leaves.

CUCUMBER AND POTATO SALAD

Peel and slice as many cucumbers as needed. Place in bowl of lightly salted water (enough to cover cukes) and chill overnight.
Thinly slice one large sweet onion and add to cucumbers in bowl.
Boil redskinned potatoes in their skins until fork-tender. Drain and cool potatoes in refrigerator (not in cucumber water!)
Drain cukes and onions and squeeze dry. Place back in bowl. Chop potatoes into bite-sized chunks....with or without skin. Add to bowl of cucumbers and onions. Toss gently with olive oil and vinegar with a bit of sugar and dill weed to taste.

Meeting Minutes       Aug. 12, 2013

 

Meeting called to order by President Jim Rawdon.

Two new members welcomed – Krisha Garcia and Cindy Gamery.

 

Jim read a thank you note from West View Manor for the 150 dining scarves the guild recently made and donated to them.

 

He read notices about two upcoming quilt shows:

Morrow County Quilt show Oct 5 & 6

Streetsboro Quilt Show Oct 5 & 6

 

A request was made for volunteers to do demos at the Wayne County Fair.

 

It was announced that we have lost two of our members.

Both Donna Williams and Heather Sensibaugh passed away since our last meeting.   Gwen sent cards to both families.  It was suggested that a memorial be set up at our next quilt show for these ladies.  That will be taken to the quilt show committee.

 

Vicky Hartzler asked if anyone else would like to volunteer to be on the committee for our next retreat in 2015.  They will meet soon to decide on instructors and projects.  Currently the committee consists of Vicky, Sara Bistline, Bonnie Krueger, Jim Rawdon, Barb Byler and Mary Lou Nuzum.  Contact Vicky if interested in joining this committee.

 

Carol Remington asked if anyone would be interested in volunteering with Hospice to go into homes of patients who want someone to quilt with them.  A list of volunteers will be compiled.  Contact Carol if interested.

 

Jeri and Janet reported that pillowcases will be delivered Tuesday Aug. 13^th to Community Action, Every Woman’s House and Wayne County Children’s Advocacy.  They plan to take 100 pillowcases to each agency.  Another pillowcase work day is planned for Sat. Sept 21^st 9AM to 3PM at the Church.  Sign up list was circulated.

 

Our program on Art Quilts was presented by Jean Evans.  Jean is an award winning artist/quilter who has had her works shown at National Quilt shows in Paducah and Dallas among others.  She presented an excellent program on painting fabrics and art quilts.

 

During Show and Tell many members brought completed projects from the recent pizza box challenge.

Jean Evans, a local quilter from Medina, will be talking about painting on quilts and showing us many of her own creations.  Jean has exhibited and won ribbons for her quilts in Paducah.  Come see new and unique techniques and be inspired!

TIP OF THE MONTH:  Frightening Techniques!

Is there a sewing or quilting technique that you think “oh, I’m just not experienced enough to try that!”?  What ever it is, this is the very thing you should make a point of learning.  Often it will be easier than you think.  Do you learn better when someone shows you?  Then why not ask someone in the guild.  TCQ has a wealth of friendly members willing to share with others.  Choose to work on a small project that will stretch your skills and knowledge.  You will keep learning and become a better quilter. 

To make it easier to remove papers from foundation-pieced projects, run the handle end of a pair of scissors along each stitching line to weaken the paper.

To keep appliqué stems from shifting out of position while hand-stitching, pin over, rather than through, them.  Works for machine appliqué, too! 

To make a sewing machine needle easier to thread, shine a beam of light behind the needle’s eye.

AUGUST REFRESHMENTS

KITCHEN KORNER

LEMON SPINACH PASTA
1# short cut pasta cooked al dente and drained
1 lemon, zested and juiced
1/3 cup olive oil
2 T reserved pineapple juice (from chicken salad) or 1 T honey
6 cups baby spinach
1/2 cup fresh dill
1/2 cup crumbled Feta cheese
Toss all together and refrigerate until serving.

 

BACON APPLE COLESLAW
3 T olive oil
2 T mayonnaise
1 T Dijon mustard
1 T lemon juice
1/2 tsp hot sauce
1 T sugar
dash of salt
1 (16-ounce) package shredded coleslaw mix
1 large apple, diced
4 slices cooked bacon, crumbled
  Toss all together and chill until serving.  Is great with grilled burgers or chicken!

FRESH SUMMER PASTA SALAD
4 medium-sized ripe tomatoes, cut into 1-inch chunks
1/2 medium-sized red onion, thinly sliced
3/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 cup chopped fresh basil
2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 pound thin spaghetti
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

In a large bowl, combine tomatoes, onion, olive oil, vinegar, garlic, basil, dill, salt, and pepper; mix well. Cover and chill for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, in a soup pot, cook pasta al dente; drain and place in a bowl. Cover pasta with chilled tomato mixture, sprinkle with Parmesan cheese, and serve immediately.

 

PECAN CAKE ~ A friend’s mom makes this awesome cake and it gets all of us slobbering every time she shares!!

1 Betty Crocker Pecan cake mix

1 cup water

1/2 cup oil

4 eggs

     Mix well with electric mixer.  To mixture add 1 container of Betty Crocker Pecan-Coconut icing + 3/4 cup chopped pecans.  Mix well.

    Bake in greased bundt pan or 9" x 13" pan at 350* for 45 minutes.  Dust with powdered sugar when cooled.

note: icing goes INTO cake, not on it!  

 

QUICK CRAB DIP1 ¼ c. mayonnaise
1 c. crabmeat
½ c. grated Cheddar
1 T. horseradish
¼ c. French dressing
Mix all together. Chill. Serve with crackers.

Don’t loose your momentum now!  Quilted and bound pizza box projects are to be shown at the August meeting.  Hope everyone had fun with the challenge…Sally and I had fun bringing it to you!

Tree City Quilters Meeting Minutes July 8, 2013

 

Meeting called to order by Jim Rawdon. 

 

One guest in attendance – Cindy Demury came with Mary Green.

 

Jim expressed the guilds thanks to Kim Panter for making name tags for our new members.

 

Sympathy extended to Tonya for the recent deaths of both her mother and mother-in-law.

 

We then enjoyed our picnic of delicious food furnished by all.

 

Pizza box challenge comes to an end this month and all pizza boxes were returned to their owners.  It was a beautiful display of all the handiwork done by our members.

 

The committee planned games but our picnic was cut short due to threatening storms.

MEETING: Annual Picnic!  Note change of location and time!

This is always the best fun you can have regardless of wind, rain, cold, heat, etc!!  Hope everyone can make it this year.  We are being asked to bring a dish to share, 5 fat quarters, a Watermelon Challenge piece, and your Pizza Box challenge.  Table service and drinks will be provided.  The Watermelon Challenge can be anything you want sewn by you and containing a watermelon.  See you then…..dressed and ready for any weather ‘cause we’ve seen it all!

Please don’t forget to supply the editor with your pre-addressed, stamped envelopes to receive your monthly newsletter. 

TIP OF THE MONTH:

Before basting your quilt top and batting, remove the creases from the batting.  Use a blow dryer or tumble the batt in your dryer. 

Alcohol prep pads can be used to clean a sticky sewing needle.  They are also good to keep around for your pricked fingers! 

Pipe cleaners are wonderful for cleaning your machine of all that fuzz!  Cut them to various lengths and try in your bobbin case.

A 3-ring binder is very handy for keeping a lot of your sewing tools.  Keep templates in clear page protectors; file all your needles in the clear divided pages.  Its easy to mark and label on these pages.  The binder takes up a lot less space and looks good on a shelf where you can grab it quickly.

UNITED QUILT SHOW

During United Quilt Guild’s quilt show July 19-21, 2013 there will be a Certified Appraiser available on the 19^th 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Costs are $45 for written and $25 for verbal appraisals. These are directed at replacement value and for insurance purposes only but you do find out some details about quilt history.  

Time slots are still available.

KITCHEN KORNER

Here are a couple of good dishes for pot lucks during the summer

Circus Peanut Jello Salad

1 lg orange jello – 6 oz.

1 can crushed pineapple

2, 11 0z cans mandarin oranges

1 bag circus peanuts

1 regular tub of cool whip

Drain and reserve the juice from the pineapple and oranges.  You need 3 cups.  If you are short, add some OJ.  Bring the liquid to a boil.  Add the circus peanuts and stir until melted; remove from the heat.  Add the jello and the cool whip, and fruit.  Pour into a 13 X 9 pan and cool overnight.  As you serve, flip the pieces over.

Rice Salad

1 pkg. chicken rice (Country Inn)

12 pimento olives

½ green pepper, dices

3 green onions, sliced

1 6 oz. jar marinated artichoke hearts

¼ tsp. curry

½ cup mayo

Cook rice without butter or frying and cool.

Add olives, peppers, and onions.  Half the artichokes.  Stir into the rice including the juice in the jar.  Add curry and mayo.  Mix and chill. 

Yummy Cheese Ball….especially for summer1

16 oz. softened cream cheese

1 8 oz. can crushed pineapple in hvy syrup, drained

2 cups chopped pecans (1 cup for rolling)

¼ c. chopped green pepper

2 TBL. Chopped onion

1 tsp. sea salt

Mix all, chill, form into a ball and roll in the chopped pecans.  Chill 24 hrs.

Tree City Quilters Guild June 10, 2013 Meeting Minutes

 

President Jim Rawdon brought the meeting to order. 

Andrea Todor’s father was a guest tonight.  He is visiting from Hungary.

 

Treasurer reported a balance of $2118.64

 

Jeri and Janet reminded the guild of the pillowcase workday scheduled for June 22, 2013 at the church. 

 

Jeri reported that the Children’s workshop committee recently completed the grant application and sent it to NEORQC.  The grant was received and is under review.  Jeri also reported that lots of things are available to us thru NQA and that grant application is being worked on by the committee.

 

Jim read a thank you note from Mary Green stating how much she enjoys being a member of the guild.

 

Thanks from Sue Jusli for cards and prayers during her recent illness.

 

Kathy Ott and Shirley Rodgers gave an update of the upcoming picnic.  They are asking for additional help on the committee. 

Bring 5 fat quarters to the picnic.

Bring a covered dish to share – table service and drinks provided.

The challenge will be anything with watermelons on it.

 

Pizza box challenge boxes were distributed.  This is the last border.   The completed block should be brought to the July picnic meeting.

 

Lucile Lozier gave a presentation of gift items to make for friends.  She shared nearly 30 items and had patterns for some to share with members.  It was a well received program.
