Happy June !I can't believe it is June already and summer weather is here. Now that the quilt show is over, it is time to start something new . 2020 will be here before we know it.As you think about new projects, consider something you haven't done in the past. Perhaps a new color or a different style? Modern instead of classic or vice versa? Applique or paper piecing? Something with curves? Miniature instead of full size? May Monthly Meeting Minutes
5/14/2018
Introduction:
· Kay welcomed us all & wished us a happy Mother’s Day. Among participants this evening were a relatively large number of guests (at least 8) and a new member, Donna Moot.
· We celebrated May birthdays: we have 5 members born this month. Each member in attendance shared what they’d most want in a gift package – a fun question to consider!
· Thanks were offered to the refreshment committee for this month & those who have volunteered for next month.
· Kay announced that JoAnn has a big coupon sale going on through Wednesday, 5/13. Go on line or check apps on your phones for further detail.
· We discussed a motion to donate $30 per workshop to the church for use of the space for an open-ended period of time. Seconded & passed. Handwork group will continue to collect a donation annually.
Reporting:
Secretary’s minutes were approved as submitted.
Treasurer’s report and income statement from the quilt show were presented by Bev Fash & approved as submitted.
Sunshine Committee: Gwen reported that she’s thankful to report no new needs last month.
Activities & Classes:
Quilt show was wonderful. Kudos to all who helped & especially to Janet for the vintage quilt area. And thanks to all who participated, attended, brought a husband or other “assistant”, etc.
· We’ve gotten positive feedback from vendors as well – they were appreciative of the show and how well they were cared for.
· Laura moved that we reserve $2K from quilt show revenue for the next quilt show. Seconded & passed.
· Jeri presented Viewers’ Choice Awards from the show. Note that every quilt got votes – your efforts were much appreciated. Mary Lou photographed the winners’ projects. Thanks to all for their participation! Jeri & Mary Mahoney will chair the next quilt show – sign up now to help out!
Our July meeting on 7/9 will be our annual picnic committee. Remember that our start time is 6:00 p.m. at First Church of God. Bring a dish to share, and a garden-themed item for the challenge.
Next “frills” retreat: March 2019 at Best Western ($150).
Somewhere Sewing Retreat will take place on September 22 & 23. ($10 per day). The Inn at Millersburg will offer a discounted rate for us. No scheduled activities, but open to ideas you may have.

· Members shared the Mystery Squares they’ve made. In August/September, we’ll set a workshop to put the Mystery Quilts together. Don’t worry too much about finished size of blocks, as we’ll be able to fudge a little during quilt assembly.
· Roberta shared a Monster Block. Look on line for ideas & keep making blocks!
· Made fabric: members turned in what they’d created.
· The meeting concluded with “regular” show & tell.

Challenge Definitions (just a reminder)
· Challenge 1 - Mystery Blocks: Kay provided manila envelopes with instructions & color specifications for a block. The idea is to do something you hadn’t tried before or something you might not choose for yourself. Bring the completed square & the envelope back and the pattern will be passed on to someone else. When we have enough squares, we’ll make quilts for the veteran’s home (12 blocks per quilt). You’ll get a token for each block you complete. Turn your tokens in in November, prize in December. You must use the 3 colors prescribed, and you can then add one other color as accents. Final dimension: 12 ½” squares. You can bring your square/envelope back whenever you finish – you can turn one in & pick up another each month, or contribute less frequently if you like.
· Challenge 2: Monster Quilt (Applique): Kay provided a sheet with monster parts – make your own square. No color limitations. Check out Monster Quilts on line (Shiny Happy World or other sites) & put your own twist on what you see. Make a block & bring it in. 13” start for 12 ½” square. Background = color of your choice.
· Challenge 3: Portrait Quilt – create a picture quilt of a person or a building/landscape using small squares/pieces of different tonal value. You must provide a picture of whatever image you’re creating for comparison. Carpenter’s Cup in Smithville has an interesting example (picture of bistro made up of small squares.) You get a token for your little bag (a big token!) for completing this challenge. Should be at least 36” – want it to be free-flowing, not tedious.
Guild Picnic: this year’s challenge is Garden Party – use anything associated with garden (fruit, veg, garden tool fabric. Garden apron projects….)
Made Fabric: Thanks to those who have worked their scraps into made fabric. In upcoming meetings, we’ll look at making “made fabric” into a project, so don’t stop piecing!
The Monthly Ongoing Hand Workers will meet on the first Friday of each month from 9:00 to 11:50 at Parkview Christian Church, in the Fireside Room. Meeting dates for 2018: Jan 5,
