Meeting: September 19, 2016; 7:00 pm
Parkview Church of Christ
1912 Burbank Road
Wooster, OH 44691

PRESIDENT’S GREETING:
Hi, Quilt Guild Friends.  I hope you loved cruising to the Caribbean last month. Though the beginning of the cruise was a little rocky, we enjoyed smooth sailing once we took our "Smartie" Dramamine. Our ship's floor show by Kori Turner-Goodhart grabbed our attention as we enjoyed her beautiful, unique quilts and stories. In keeping with our Caribbean cruise theme, our August challenge is all about colorful batiks and bright fabrics. This time, you are to choose either batik fabrics or brightly colored fabrics from your stash and make something that is at least 12" square. This is a little bigger than the previous challenges. You may use other fabric from your stash, but your stitched item must be made of 75% batik or bright fabrics. If you make this challenge item and bring it completed to any of our "Show and Tells" between now and our December meeting, you will receive a cute Caribbean fish wooden button.
This has been a busy month, with workshops and our bus trip on Aug. 25. A special thank you to Sarah Bistline and her committee for planning such a fun shopping trip! Keep working on your quilt show items, and I will see you all next month as we visit Colonial Williamsburg. Shirley Rodgers and Kim Panter will present our program on a new, fun challenge (not to be confused with our monthly stash busting challenges), and we will talk QUILT SHOW!  ðŸ™‚ Sally

TIPS AND TRICKS
·         ZigZag Applique: When using a machine satin stitch, it is not necessary to turn under the edges of applique pieces because the entire outer edge is secured by the stitches.  Depending upon the stability of your fabric, the applique design, and your personal preference, you can use fusible web, pins, or fabric glue to hold the applique pieces in place for machine stitching.  When stitching, position the presser foot so the right swing of the needle just grazes the applique foundation.  The left swing of the needle should be completely on the applique piece.
·         Wool Applique: Some felted wools still fray a little at the edges.  If you don’t care for this look, seal wool applique edges with a seam sealant such as Fray Check, or back them with a light weight fusible web.  This helps prevent them from raveling and makes them firmer to stitch around.
·         To stabilize fabric before cutting, spray it with sizing or starch and press until dry.  The starch keeps bias edges from stretching, which means more accurate piecing.
·         Revers-image patterns; After tracing a reverse-image template, mark the pattern’s name or number and write “reversed” on the template.  When you’re using the template, this will remind you that the pattern is already reversed.

WORKSHOPS
The Monthly Ongoing Hand Workers workshop will next meet **Friday, September 9, from 9 – 11:50.  Please bring a snack and your handwork.  Prepare for great fun!  Guests are welcome.  Call Sally Kitchen if you have any questions.  Future Dates:  October 7, November 11, December 2.

For the show, everyone is encouraged to try something different.  Entries will not be disqualified if attempts are made to try something different that could be considered modern.  This is more for fun than to have to adhere to strict rules.  Have fun with it!
