PRESIDENT’S GREETING:
Ahoy, Quilter's! Wow, it is hot this summer! It is a good time to stay in with the air conditioning and quilt! Didn't we have a great time at the picnic?! A special thanks to Kim Panter and her committee for a fun evening at the beach! The food was yummy, the beachwear outrageous, the challenge quilts beautiful, and the game was a blast!! Kathy Ott, we loved those table decorations too! Mary Lou, thank you for taking the fun photos! I hope you all are working on the July challenge! Search your stash for ocean or water fabric or use blue fabric from your stash to make something that is at least 8" square. This item must be 60% water or blue fabric! This challenge is due by December, and the token is a sea shell bead. Wouldn't it be fun to make a beach scene with the challenge fabric?  Then you could embellish it with the shell bead! :) Speaking of shells, at our August meeting, we will be cruising to the Caribbean! Kori Turner-Goodhart, from Olive Grace Studios in Cortland, will be doing a trunk show and sharing about her technique for hand embroidery. Invite a guest to join us for this festive evening! Kori will also be vending, beginning at 6:45, so bring extra cash. You will love her fabric and threads! See you soon on our Carribbean Cruse!  ðŸ™‚ Sally

2016 TCQ ANNUAL BUS TRIP
We will be traveling to three quilt shops starting in the Coshocton area:
1.  Mercantile on Main
2.  A Touch of Thread Quilting Gallery- catered Lunch Stop
3.  Lunn Fabrics Lancaster, they will give us a program
There are plans for at least an hour and a 1/2 at each shop so we don’t need to rush.   The shop owners may give us a demo or have a special surprise for us.
We will leave at 8AM from Buehler’s Mill Town employee parking lot (please park behind Buehler’s near the ups store entrance) and should be home by 6:30 PM.  Cost is $40.00 per person with lunch included along with water and snacks.  Registration forms available at the sign-in table.  Last Chance to register is at the August meeting!  Any Questions; contact Sarah Bistline.  Call a friend and join the fun!!

TIPS AND TRICKS
  • Pre-washing Fabrics: When pre-washing fabric that might bleed, include an old white t-shirt or sock in the wash load.  If the shirt or sock remains white, you’ll know the fabric is colorfast
  • To prevent stretching the fabric as you draw around templates, place 220-grit sandpaper under the fabric
  • Agonizing about which fabrics to join while piecing a scrappy project?  Toss all the fabric pieces in the dryer to mix them up.  Then put the fabrics in a paper bag and choose from there.  The resulting blocks will have a random, impromptu pattern
  • On retreats, use a thick pot holder as an ironing surface when pressing small blocks
  • For a quick Gift Exchange Idea; cut 2 ½ wide strips from a variety of fabrics to make your own jelly roll.  Package the strips inside a pint-size canning jar.  Top the jar with a pincushion by covering the canning lid with circles of batting (padded in the middle) and a fabric circle.

For the show, everyone is encouraged to try something different.  Entries will not be disqualified if attempts are made to try something different that could be considered modern.  This is more for fun than to have to adhere to strict rules.  Have fun with it!

July Newsletter and June Minutes

Meeting: July 11, 2016, 6:00 pm
First Church of God
1953 Akron Road, Wooster, OH 44691

PRESIDENT’S GREETING:
Hello, Quilting Crew.  Summer is a great time to travel!  As I am driving back from our summer vacation to Massachusetts and Vermont, I am enjoying the beautiful scenery, especially the Green Mountains. I hope that each of you enjoyed traveling to Washington DC during our June meeting.  Marilyn Nisius shared some interesting patriotic facts and encouraged us to consider making patriotic quilts and donating them to organizations like, Quilts of Valor.  This month we have a patriotic challenge. Use patriotic theme fabric or red, white, and blue fabrics, or a combination of both (all from your fabric stash) to make an item that must be at least 8" square.  The item that you make must be 100% patriotic fabric and/or 100% red, white, and blue fabrics.  If you complete this challenge, you will receive 2 tokens, a star charm and a red pearl 6mm bead.  Can you guess what our next challenge will be? Join us at the picnic to find out. Remember to come at 6:00!  Get out your flip flops and the rest of your beach attire, because I will see you in July at my favorite beach
as we celebrate a sunny summer of quilting! ðŸ˜Ž Sally

TCQ ANNUAL PICNIC
OK all you quilters, the time is drawing near for the annual picnic! THE TIME IS 6:00PM.  We will be at the First Church of God, 1953 Cleveland Rd, just as we have been in the past. Remember that this year’s theme is “Beach Party”   There will be 2 contests. One is our usual “anything handmade" with a beach theme.  The second contest is who comes to the picnic best dressed (or outfitted) for a day at the beach. Use your imagination!  We will only be playing 1 game and since we had some much fun with it last year we are going to do the “Fat Quarter Toss” again. So you need to bring 3-5 fat quarters rolled and tied to play. Roll them in a way that will make it easy to toss.

Other than that, what you need to bring is as follows: A dish to share, your OWN place setting , your drink of choice. Keep in mind when choosing your dish the IBPC will NOT be providing meat this year.  And last but certainly not least your happy smiling face!  See you on Monday July 11th AT 6:00PM ! Bring your HAPPY FACE!  Kim and the IBPC

ASHLAND QUILT GUILD SHOW
Old Uniontown Quilt Show- (Ashland quilt guild)-  There show will be Friday July 1 from 9-7 and Saturday July 2 from 9 - 5 at Park Street Brethren Church, 619 Park Street, Ashland.  Admission is $4.

TIPS AND TRICKS
Writing on Fabric;
·         Choose a smooth-surface, 100% cotton fabric.  Permanent ink pens perform better on all-cottons than blends
·         Select fabric in a color that allows the ink to show.  Avoid white-on-white prints because the pattern is painted on the fabric rather than dyed.
·         Prewash fabric as cotton fabrics usually contain sizing which acts as a barrier to ink penetration.
·         Use pens made for this purpose
·         Write delicately so no bleeding occurs.  Lines can be made thinker by going over them more than once.
·         If you don’t like your handwriting; trace what you want after printing it out on the computer
·         Practice on scraps first!

WORKSHOPS
The Monthly Ongoing Hand Workers workshop will next meet **Friday, July 8, from 9 – 11:50.  Please bring a snack and your handwork.  Prepare for great fun!  Guests are welcome.  Call Sally Kitchen if you have any questions.  Future Dates:  August 5, September 9, October 7, November 11, December 2.
