JULY MEETING: Christmas in July Annual Picnic

Please mark your calendars for our annual summer picnic!  Please make a note of the earlier start time and the location!!!

·         Location: First Church of God: 1953 Akron Road, Wooster, OH in the picnic pavilion 

·         The challenge is to bring any Christmas project that you have completed for this year whether it be a gift or a decoration.

·         Pot Luck; (the committee is supplying the meat)

·         Toni Phillips is providing table service

·         The committee has asked that each of us bring 4-5 Christmas items to make our own center pieces for the tables.  They would like us to spread out and sit 4-5 per table 

·         5 fat quarters: rolled and tied!  Repeat: we were asked to roll and tie the fat quarters

·         The committee will supply meat, water, tea, lemonade, tape, scissors, pipe cleaners, yarn, and white plastic table cloths

Our picnics are always fun!  Don’t forget your Christmas challenge and other Show-N-Tell.  See you there!

*** 585 is closed due to construction.  If you are approaching the church from the north: use Smithville Western to 585 to Honeytown.  Turn south on Back Orrville to GEYERS CHAPEL and follow the detour to LONG ROAD.  Approach the church heading NORTH on 585.  The ENTRANCE SIGN is on top of an ornage barrel!  If you are approaching from the ORRVILLE area; use Back Orrville Road to Geyers Chapel and follow the detour.  Coming out of Wooster there are 2 approaches: north on 585 to the church entrance and east on Portage Road, continuing through the light at 585 to Geyers Chapel and follow the detour to Long Road.  

 

MEMBERSHIP

June attendance:  55 people were at the meeting; 2 guests and 53 members.  

 

New Members; please check the hospitality table as you arrive and sign up for the different committees.  

There are still some open spaces for Refreshments and Housekeeping.    

 

DOGWOOD APPLIQUE AND WHOLECLOTH PATTERN

Someone in our guild spoke with Joy and Brenda Troyer about a whole cloth quilt pattern with appliqued Dogwood flowers.  Barb Byler has the pattern: please ask and it is yours!  

 

WAYNE COUNTY FAIR DEMONSTRATIONS

Ruth Bishop is organizing the Fair domos for this year.  Anyone interested in demonstrating an aspect of quilting should contact Ruth and become part of the group!  This is a fun way to meet people and let them know about the great art of quilting as well as grow our membership.  

 

 

COMING SOON; ROUND ROBIN QUILT

Back by popular demand!  This fall we will be starting a Round Robin quilt with everyone in the guild invited to join the fun!  Each one of us will be asked to provide our own fabrics along with the theme, style, and colors we have chosen for our quilt.  Each month the quilts will be exchanged with other quilters who will make a block or blocks.  Instructions will be provided with options for sizes and difficulty of blocks.  Each month, the quilts will be exchanged and the number of blocks will grow!  This is a fun way to design your won quilt using the blocks that friends in the guild have contributed.  As a part of this new round robin, design options will be provided for designing your quilts.  Please begin looking through your stash or selecting new fabrics to use in this new, exciting round robin venture!!  

 

The idea for this activity is from the book “Round Robin Renaissance” by M’Liss Raw Hawley.  It is available on Amazon for less than $10 (including shipping) if you are interested in purchasing a copy.  Our project is in chapter 5.  

 

TCQ BUS TRIP; AUGUST 19, 2015

A marvelous stress-free day trip with great company to 4 stores!  8 am – appx. 6:30 pm.  Registration forms are available at the sign-in table.  Deadline for registration is August 10; ask a friend to join you!  

·         $45 per person

·         Lunch is included along with water and snacks on the bus

·         Leaving from the Buehler’s Milltown employee parking lot at 8 am.  This parking lot is behind the store.  Please park far back to leave room for the employees.  

·         Turn in your registration form to Sarah Bistline by August 10

 

WHO IS THIS?  

We now have a membership of 74 and we gain new members each meeting.  While this is a good thing we are growing so quickly that there are people we don’t know.  Surveys, or short questionnaires are being distributed at meetings and online to everyone.  Please…..fill them out (I do need to know who the information is from) but do not talk about the information shared.  Each month we are going to share this information with everyone and it will be up to you to discover “Who Is This.”  Turn in your guesses to Barb and the first correct answer will receive a small prize.  Descriptions will be shared in the newsletters…..revealing “Who This Is” will be at the meetings!  You can text, call, or email your guesses to Barb.  Good Luck!!

“I was born in Michigan and besides there and Ohio have also lived in Pennsylvania.  I have traveled to Maryland and Kentucky, have won ribbons at our quilt show, work as a sales associate, and just love everything about quilting.”

TIPS AND TRICKS

·         Place a sheet of heavy-duty aluminum foil on your ironing board under your pressing or fusing area to reflect the heat and improve the bond

·         Store your rotary cutting rulers on a revolving belt holder mounted in your sewing room or studio

·         A Lazy Susan on your work table keeps tools in easy reach

·         Instead of wetting the end of the thread, wet the eye of the needle so it grabs the thread to make threading a needle easier

 

2015 QUILTY CHALLENGE: “Learn and Grow”

Progress is being made on this year’s Quilty Challenge.  There are currently 18 TCQ members working in the challenge.  If you are a new member; please check with the Hospitality Committee for the Challenge questionnaire.  Once you have checked off everything that you have done in the past, choose 3 new techniques, colors, styles, etc. and start sewing!  You must incorporate 3 new skills/techniques/colors/whatever into either 1 project or separate projects.  They must be completed by December…..quilted and bound…..ready for show-n-tell.  Happy Sewing! 

 

TCQ GROUP SIGNATURE QUILT FOR HELEN

Many of you know one of our past but long time member Helen Iannarelli is now living at Smithville Western Care Center.  We would like to gift Helen with a signature lap quilt to express our love.  We would like anyone that is interested to contribute a block.  Sue Smucker has volunteered to quilt it.  

·         Rail Fence Block

·         Blue is Helen’s favorite color

·         Middle strip is muslin or off-white color

·         Sign your name using an archival permanent type ink

·         Top and bottom strips are your choice

·         Every Strip Must Be 2 ½ inches by 6 ½ inches

·         Completed block should be 6 ½ inches SQUARE

·         Blocks are due at the August meeting!

 

 

 

 

 

HOUSEKEEPING COMMITTEE

A reminder to all members that we are responsible to straighten our meeting room, empty the trash into the dumpster, push in our chairs, and vacuum the floor each month.  We need people to volunteer to help with these chores!!!

COMMUNITY PROJECT

Quilts or comforters for babies, toddlers, young children and teens are needed in our community.  Sizes could be 40 X 40 for babies, 50 X 56 for toddlers, 68 X 89 for children and teens, lap robes 56 X 70.  Please use your judgment; all sizes are welcome!  Ruth Bishop will collect these quilts from us all year.  

 

WORKSHOPS

The Handwork workshop will meet July 10, from 9 – 11:50.  Please bring a snack and your handwork.  Prepare for great fun!  Guests are welcome.  Call Sally Kitchen if you have any questions.  

·         Hand Applique: a 2 session workshop: Saturday, June 20 instructions will be on preparation

§  Saturday, June 27 will focus on needle turn, curves, and points

Sally Kitchen is the instructor, sign up at the meeting!

·         2 Color Ombre Bargello with Vicky Hartzler will be Saturday, August 22, 9:30 – 3:30.  

·         Tote Bag with Kim Panter will be in September or October: Stay tuned for when and where!

·         String Quilt workshop with Mary Lou Nuzum will be this fall: stay tuned for when and where!

2016 QUILT SHOW CHALLENGES!!

3 separate challenges for you to try!  

 

·         Scarlet and Gray Challenge- Two Categories 

o   Quilt/wallhanging - greater than or equal to 240 inches perimeter 

o   Other- accessory, clothing or small wall hanging, less than 239 inches perimeter 

Rules- Must be greater than or equal to 50% Red and Gray; You can only use Black and White as the other colors in the quilt. 

 

·         Modern Quilt Challenge 

Modern quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design.  Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt.  These include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints; high contrast and graphic areas of solid color; improvisational piecing, minimalism; expansive negative space; and alternate grid work" (quilting patterns).   

For the show, everyone is encouraged to try something different.  Entries will not be disqualified if attempts are made to try something different that could be considered modern.  This is more for fun than to have to adhere to strict rules.  Have fun with it! 

 

MEMBER REQUEST

Dear members, 

   This year I will be participating in the Buckeye Breakaway. This is a 150 mile bike ride to support the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. I am riding this year to honor my brother Bob who fought a courageous battle against MS for 36 years. Bob passed away in February after losing his ability to swallow. I believe that MS finally just took all it could take from him. I watched my brother fight this fight, I watched MS chip away at him for 36 years. He fought with a spirit that is unparalleled. Please won’t you help me help the MS society find a cure for this awful disease? I will be bringing my sponsorship forms with me to the next meeting. Any donation large or small may be the one that cracks the code. I appreciate anything you can give.

KITCHEN KORNER

CHEESY CHICKEN AND RICE CASSEROLE  (serves 6)

1 can Cream of Chicken soup 

1 1/3 cups water 
3/4 cup uncooked long grain white rice 
1 onion, chopped
2 cups frozen mixed vegetables of your choice
1 1/2 pounds skinless, boneless chicken breast halves 
1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese   

Heat the oven to 375°F. Stir the soup, water, rice, and vegetables in an 11 x 8 x 2-inch baking dish. Top with chicken and cover with foil.  Bake for 1 hour. Remove foil and top with cheese.  Seal again with foil and allow to stand 10 minutes.  Stir rice before serving. 

 

PESTO PASTA CAPRESE SALAD (serves 6) 

1 1/2 cups rotini pasta, uncooked 

1/4 cup pesto 

1 T olive oil 

1 clove garlic, minced 

3/4 cup halved grape tomatoes 

3/4 cup small fresh mozzarella balls 

1/4 cup minced fresh basil leaves (2-4 leaves) 

  Cook pasta al-dente in boiling salted water (about 8 min).  Drain and toss gently with the rest of the ingredients.  Chill until ready to serve. 

 

TWO-INGREDIENT CHOCOLATE DESSERT (serves 6-8) 

1 box chocolate wafers (I found them with ice cream treats ~ cones and such) 

1 pint heavy cream, whipped 

On a serving platter 'ice' the wafers together in a long log ~ whipped cream between every wafer.  Ice the outside of the entire log and decorate with chocolate sprinkles. Cover lightly with plastic wrap using tooth picks to keep the plastic off the whipped cream.  Allow to chill several hours and then slice on the diagonal.

Barb opened the meeting at 7:00 PM. Guests, Velma Thomas and Julie Singer were introduced and welcomed.

Joy and Brenda Troyer sent a thank you note to the guild for us allowing them to sell their fabric at our

meeting. They sent along the Dogwood pattern for the person that requested it.

Last months minutes were approved by the membership. Jane firsted, Shirley seconded.

Treasurer’s report was read. Opening balance $2489.11, expenses of $187.11, Income 0. Ending balance

$2301.98

Jane Richardson did an audit of the books and everything checked out fine.

This months “Who is it” was Rose Marie Baab. Jeri was the first to answer, Sarah Bistline was a close

second. Ruth Bishop also guessed correctly.

Sunshine Committee- Jeri’s Mother in law is ill. Naomi sent a card to Nancy Danby. Nancy was at the

meeting tonight.

Trips and Workshops- Handwork group will meet July 10th (one week later than usual)

August 22 Vicky will be teaching 2 color Bargello She showed some fabrics that will work for this

technique. She also has a supply list for those interested.

August 19th BusTrip With Sarah Bistline. We need 32 people, we have 10. Cost 45 dollars includes 4

quilt shops and lunch. Please let Sarah know if you plan to attend. Deadline July 19th.

Picnic- We will supply drinks and meat. Theme is Christmas in July. Bring 5 fat quarters rolled and tied.

Toni volunteered to provide all place settings.

Quilt Show- Challenges for the next quilt show will be published in the next newsletter.

Sue Smucker did a presentation on the possibility of a quilt retreat next year. Suggestions are no classes,

work on your own or have members teach to keep costs down. She asked for committee members to help.

Michelle Reed made some very positive comments about last months program given by Laura Noletti.

Debi Moffitt from Somewhere sewing was our guest speaker tonight. She gave a presentation on the

“Row by Row Experience”

There is no cost to you. You can pick up patterns for free from each shop OR buy the kit for the row.

All of the Holmes County Quilt shops are involved this year.

Dates are June 21-Sept 8.

Prizes are available.

First person to come into shop with 8 rows completed will receive 25 fat quarters.

This years theme is Water.

Shops will give bonuses for doing their row.

Refeshments and social time followed.
