December Newsletter and November Minutes

Tree City Quilter’s Guild

The purpose of this organization shall be to create, stimulate, and maintain an interest in all matters pertaining to the making of quilts and to establish and promote educational endeavors through quilts

Meeting: December 9, 6:00 PM

Parkview Christian Church

1912 Burbank Road

MEETING; TCQ Annual Christmas Party!

This year our party will be a potluck.  Please bring a dish to share with everyone.  This year’s challenge is “Snowmen”.  Your project can be any size and anything related to Snowmen.  This will be a gift exchange with a $15 limit.  No one is obligated to participate in the exchange.  The committee has promised a new, fun way to exchange gifts and it would be fun if everyone was involved.  Please relate your gift to quilting in some way.

MEMBERSHIP DUES

It’s that time of year!  Your $15 dues for the year 2014 are due by the January meeting.  HOWEVER, if you wish to be included in the membership booklet, you must pay your dues by the December meeting.  New booklets will be prepared and printed before January.

NEW MEMBER

Please welcome our new member, Agnes Steiner

Agnes lives at 121 Countryview Ave, Dalton, Ohio 44618

330-828-8162 home phone, 330-287-8550 cell phone

TCQ FACEBOOK

If you have not already found it, Tree City Quilters has a Facebook page. To find it, type “Tree City Quilters Guild, Wooster, Ohio” in the search box on the facebook page. Click “Like” and you will get the posts. Facebook does not send everyone who likes a page, every post but you can maximize the number of posts you get by frequently liking items or writing comments. If it has been a while since you have gotten a post, you can always go to the Facebook page to see if something new has been added.

Mary Lou will try to post a couple times a month. But the page is for all of us. It is the place you can post photos of your completed projects for others to see. Just snap a digital photo, go to the TCQ group page and click on “write a post” Your photo will be included on the page and we all will be able to see it.

This is also a good place to write recommendations for shops you like, books or patterns that others may want to know about. You don’t need to include a photo to post. Just go to “write a post” and tell us about the shop, books, pattern you have found. If you run across a good sale, other guild members may want to know about it. New notions are another thing to write about. If you like to use it, others may also. Sewing/quilting tips and links to tutorials and other items would also be appreciated. The more we all use this page, the better it will be.

APOLOGIES!

My sincere apologies for the sparseness and lateness of this newsletter.  At the same time my mother-in-law passed away, our computer crashed….permanently!  I have lost all previous copies of the newsletter going back quite a few years.   So, today has been the first moment I have found the time to sit down and TRY to learn the new system.  Can we spell FRUSTRATION?!  I hope someone has the logo and can send it to me.  In the meantime, I’m working on downloading an actual template for the newsletter and have plans for a great new look!

ELECTION RESULTS

For our guild year 2014, the officers will be:

President; Jeri Fickes, Vice President; Barb Byler, Secretary; Sara McKee, Treasurer; Jolene Rehm

Members at Large Mary Green and Sally Kitchen

TIPS AND TRICKS

As promised, here is the “recipe” for the laundry detergent that I have been using.

1 – 4 lb 12 oz box of BORAX

1 – 4 lb Box of BAKING SODA

1 box LAUNDRY SODA (I have only found Arm & Hammer.  It is in a yellow box and yes, it is different than soda we cook with.)

3 bars FELLS NAPTHA OR IVORY SOAP: grated (I use a micro plane….takes about 15 minutes)

Optional; OXICLEAN

Mix all.  Use 1 TABLESPOON per load.  2 if it is heavily soiled.  I find that 1 recipe lasts me about 6 months.  I can find everything I need at Walmart or Drugmart.

Can’t get grease spots off a shirt?  Try rubbing in DAWN dish detergent and then washing.  Works great!

KITCHEN KORNER

CRAB MEAT SPREAD
1 8-oz pkg imitation crab meat, shredded
2 8-oz pkgs cream cheese, softened
1-2 green onions, minced
1 T prepared horseradish
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
4-5 drops hot pepper sauce
1/4 cup chopped nuts
Beat cream cheese and blend in remaining ingredients except nuts. Spread mixture in 9" pie plate. Top with nuts. Bake, uncovered, 375* for 20-30 minutes. Makes 3 cups. Serve with assorted crackers. sigh....

November Newsletter and October Minutes

The purpose of this organization shall be to create, stimulate, and maintain an interest in all matters pertaining to the making of quilts and to establish and promote educational endeavors through quilts.

 Meeting: November 11, 7:00 pm

Parkview Christian Church

1912 Burbank Road

MEETING: GIFT IDEAS; SOME QUILTED, SOME KNOT!

Join me in a whirlwind of creativity!  I have been making Christmas (and other) gifts for years and have quite a collection of ideas.  What do you have in your “arsenal”?  Let’s compare ideas.  I’ll Show-N-Tell some of mine; you bring some of yours, too!

MEMBERSHIP DUES

Hard to believe but it is time to begin looking ahead to next year.  According to our bylaws, membership dues are to be paid by the first meeting in January to be included in the new directory.  However, it is always better to have them paid and distribute the new booklet in December……so you know what’s coming in January!   It’s time to think about getting dues collected.

QUILTER OF THE YEAR

Each year we vote a member of Tree City the “Quilter of the Year”.  This honor can only be bestowed on a person one time.  It is at the November meeting that we vote on the Quilter of the Year.  The committee will direct us during the vote and count the votes.  The new Quilter of the Year is revealed at our Christmas Party.  Please be thinking about the different members of the guild and who YOU think has best reflected our purpose.  Page two of your booklet lists everyone and their years.

CHRISTMAS PARTY

Wow!  It is not too early to think about Christmas and all the great quilts you have to get done!!!  December 9 will be our annual Christmas party.  The committee has announced that it will be a pot-luck.  There will be a sign up sheet at the November meeting so you can get an idea of which delectable item everyone else will be bringing!!

This year’s challenge will be “Snowmen”.  Your project can be any size and anything related to snowmen.

There will be a gift exchange with a $15 limit.  No one is obligated to participate in the exchange.  The committee says they have a new, fun way to exchange gifts and it would be fun if everyone was involved.  Your gifts must be related to quilting in some way.

COMMITTES FOR 2014

Every member of TCQ should be on at least 1 committee.  Our guild cannot function with out the participation of everyone.   There are committees that do not take a lot of commitment and there are committees that meet several times each year.  Please join in and do your part to help make the guild its best!   The following is a list of the committees; see what you like!

QUILT SHOWS

2013 Ohio Amish Country Quilt Shop Hop “Creating traditions”: Oct. 29 – Nov.1

TIPS AND TRICKS

Do you ever have an appliqué piece you want to place “just so” on your quilt top but have no reference points for placement?  I’ve tried the disappearing marking pens but the lines always disappear TOO fast!  Pilot (and probably other manufacturers) make what is called a FRICTION pen.  They mark and then, with any type of friction, the ink disappears.  You can use these pens on your quilt tops/appliqué pieces…marking on the right side, then, when you have everything lined up where you want it, just iron and the ink disappears!!  Buy one and try it out.  I’ll bet you’ll be amazed!

Have you heard of a web site called WORDLES?  It is this very cool site where you create a collage of words.  I entered about 28 words that remind me of fall.  Then, you choose a color choice, press keys and the site arranges your words in a collage…kind of like a crossword puzzle without the lines and work!   Print it out and put it in a frame, or print them on a quilt, or a T-shirt, or on a ……..   I have made one for every season and have a frame in my entry way that I change every few months.  I’m going to make one for quilting, too!  Look it up and have some fun!

How do you store your quilts?  Wrapping them in plastic is bad and folding them up and storing them in a cedar chest or other wooden cabinet is bad, so what is left?  Some people lay all their quilts on an extra bed so they are flat and cover them with a sheet.  If you use that bed a lot, that could be a lot of work!  How about rolling them up and storing them in a pillow protector?  You know, that zipper case that goes over your pillows and under the pillow case itself.  You can sew a label on the outside of the case to identify the quilt and then stack them on a closet shelf.  They are readily available, don’t cost very much and protect your quilts from dust and light.

Jim asked if members would be interested in a “hug” blanket project for chemo patients.  Barb Byler suggested that be given to the community project committee for consideration.

KITCHEN KORNER

PUMPKIN SNICKERDOODLES
3 C flour
2 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter slightly softened
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar, lightly packed
2 eggs
1 cup pumpkin puree
1 tsp vanilla extract
    Topping:
      1/3 cup sugar
      1 T cinnamon
      1 tsp nutmeg
      1 tsp ground ginger
      3/4 tsp ground allspice
Sift together the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt in a medium bowl. In a mixing bowl cream together butter and sugars on high until incorporated.  One at a time, add the eggs, mixing after each addition.  Scrape the sides of the bowl. Beat on high 2-3 minutes. Mix in vanilla and pumpkin.  Beat on high 1 minute. Add flour mixture and mix on medium speed until combined.  Scrape the sides of the bowl and mix 30 seconds. Cover and freeze for 30 minutes, or until dough firms (or you are ready to make cookies)  This batter is very sticky and works best when you have firm dough to roll balls.
Pre-heat oven to 400* and line cookie sheets with parchment paper.  Prepare the topping by whisking together all ingredients in a small bowl. Drop 1" balls of dough into sugar mixture and roll until completely covered. Place on cookie sheets and bake on center rack for 10 minutes. (place waiting dough back in freezer)  Allow to cool on the cookie sheet for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

SAUSAGE ROLL-UPS

1 lb bulk sausage:   To this uncooked sausage add fresh herbs:

           2 T thyme, 1 T minced sage, 1 T chopped basil, 1 T minced Rosemary

Add 1 small onion, chopped fine, and salt/pepper to taste.

Using 1 package frozen puff pastry (thawed) unroll the 2 sheets of dough.  Slice each in half lengthwise.  Spread Dijon mustard across each of these dough quarters. Now cut each of these quarters into approximately 1 1/2" segments.   Spread a spoonful of the meat mixture across each of these segments and roll them up.  Place them on greased jelly roll pan, seam side down.  Bake at 375* for 30-40 minutes, or until golden and the meat is cooked through.

APPLE AND SWEET POTATO BAKE

3 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and halved
1 T. lemon juice
2 sweet potatoes, peeled, halved lengthwise and sliced as thin as possible
1/4 cup apple cider
1/4 cup melted butter
Slice apples as thin as possible and toss w/ lemon juice. Reserve the nicest slices of apple and potato and layer the remaining slices in a greased 1 1/2 qt baking dish. Arrange reserved slices of apple and potato on top in a pinwheel design. Pour apple cider over slices and drizzle w/ half the melted butter. Bake, covered, 350* for 1 hr. Brush w/ remaining butter and bake, uncovered for 15 min.

PUMPKIN DIP

Mix together:

8oz cream cheese
2C powdered sugar
Add: 15oz pureed pumpkin
1T cinnamon
1T pumpkin pie spice
1tsp frozen orange concentrate
Refrigerate at least 1 hour before serving. Serve with apple wedges or ginger snaps!

Meeting Minutes    Sept. 16, 2013

Meeting called to order by Vice President Jeri Fickes.

Five guests were welcomed – Beulah Olinger, Cindy McKee, Steve Kitchen, Sara Jewell and Betty Brook (from Scotland).

Jeri announced that our grant request for funds from NEORQ for the upcoming children’s workshop was granted.  She will attend the next NEROQ meeting in October to receive the funds.   These funds will be used to purchase fabric for the workshop.  Another grant will be sent this month to NQA for additional funds for other supplies.

Jeri reminded members of the upcoming pillowcase workshop Saturday Sept 21 9AM – 3PM at the church.  300 pillowcases were delivered to Community Action, Wayne County Children’s Advocacy and Every Womans House.  She read a letter received from Every Woman’s House thanking us for “partnering with them for the good of the community”.

Peggy Hodge gathered together a group of members to do demos at the Wayne County Fair.  They were well received – those participating were Peggy, Ruth Bishop, Gwen Hoover, Kevin Horst, Shirley Rogers and Mary Green.  Thanks to all of you!

Laura Noletti gave an update of the progress of the quilt show and there was discussion about the negative affects that the Amish Country Quilt show might have on ours in that theirs was not very well received this past weekend.     Laura asked that each member plan to submit at least 4 items for display at the show next year.  That would give us at least 200 items for show goers to view.  We will have an NQA judge but it is your option whether to have your project judged or not.

There will be two classes at the show and it has been decided that guild members may attend those class free of charge in exchange for an equal amount of hours worked at the show.  Plan ahead !!!

If you haven’t started already plan to start on the two challenges soon.  Those have been outlined in past newsletters.   Letters have been sent to 25 vendors and we will follow up with them soon.  Laura expressed her thanks to the committee and stated that she will have a packet prepared for each member no later than the November meeting with information regarding the quilt show.

Sally Kitchen presented our program by sharing her collection of TSMs {toy sewing machines} and gave us much information about them.  Her passion for these machines was evident in her delightful presentation.

Show and tell.
