November Newsletter
Tree City Quilters
The purpose of this organization shall be to create, stimulate, and maintain an interest in all matters pertaining to the making of quilts and to establish and promote educational endeavors through quilts.
Meeting: November 8, 7:00 PM
Parkview Christian Church
1912 Burbank Road
NOVEMBER MEETING: “Panels! Panels! Panels!”
Our November meeting will be centered around pre-printed panels and making them into quilts. Do you have a quilt at home made out of pre-printed panels? Please bring it with you to the meeting!
2011 COMMITTEES
Four reasons why you should join a TCQ Committee:
Lots of fun
Great way to get to know other members
Your ideas contribute to the function
It’s your club…why not help run it?
Still plenty of openings on our committees and refreshments groups for next year. Please make an effort to sign up at the November meeting.
2011 DUES
It is that time of year again! Your annual dues are $15.00 and they should be paid in November and December in order for your information to be included in the 2011 membership booklet.
2010 QUILTER OF THE YEAR
November is the month we vote for our Tree City Quilter of the Year. Please think about whom in the club best exemplifies our purpose. Who has motivated you, pushed you a little beyond your comfort zone, or taught you something? The result of the vote will be at our Christmas Party in December.
OHIO STAR BLOCK
The Ohio Star quilt block pattern, like most traditional patchwork quilt patterns, grew from an undocumented origin and evolved over time to become a standard design today. Ohio Star quilts have been dated back to the early 1800s. Ohio Stars, like other patchwork patterns, gained popularity from the ability to create them using scraps of fabrics. The Ohio Star quilt block appeared regularly in Depression era and post-Depression quilts of the 1930s. It was a popular pattern among Scottish and Irish immigrants in the Midwest and frequently used by the Amish

STASH TIP of the MONTH
Think of non-quilting ways to use those stash fabrics. How about lamps shades? You can make one for every season and change them to brighten a room. Make sweatshirt jackets for yourself and add cuffs to the sleeves with stash fabrics. Sort through your stash and see if you still feel the same about those fabrics. Give them away, designate a project for each fabric, or consign it to the “back of the quilt” stack.
CHRISTMAS PARTY!
Our TCQ Christmas Party will be held Monday, December 13. Members are asked to bring a dish to share. Your table service, rolls & butter, and beverages will be provided. Supper will be at 6:00. Cost is $1.00.
The party will include a Winter or Winter Holidays challenge. Make something associated with winter or winter holidays. You can use stash or new fabric and make your project any size.
The gift exchange will be a $10.00 gift, hand made or store bought, and is optional.

KITCHEN KORNER
It is fall and the perfect time for a clambake! Here is the recipe I use for clam chowder that everyone loves! Have a great time at your clambake!
Clam Chowder
Pot #1: 1 quart whole milk
6 – 10 peeled, cubed potatoes
2, qt. cans of clams and juice
2 Tbl. chicken base
¼ t soda
½ pepper
1 t thyme…or to taste
Pot #2: 10 oz. diced salt pork
1 stick butter
1 lg onion, diced
¾ cup celery, diced
1 cup flour
Pot #1; heat the milk, add everything except 1 can of clam juice (save for pot #2) and simmer until potatoes are soft. In the meantime, in pot #2; brown the salt pork. Add the butter, melt and sauté onions and celery until soft. Add flour and mix thoroughly. Add the clam juice and stir until smooth…..no flour lumps! Mix pot #1 into pot #2 while stirring. Bring to a simmer while stirring. Simmer approx. 30 minutes….ENJOY!
PUMPKIN CAKE
1 (15 oz) can solid pack pumpkin
2 cups sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
4 eggs, lightly beaten
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
In a mixing bowl, beat the pumpkin, sugar and oil. Add eggs and mix well. Combine the flour, baking soda and cinnamon. Add to the pumpkin mixture and beat until blended. Pour into a greased 15 X 10 X 1 inch baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes or until cake tests done. Cool.
Frosting: 3 oz. cream cheese
5 TBL butter, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 ¾ cup powdered sugar
3-4 teaspoons milk
Chopped nuts - optional
Beat cream cheese, butter and vanilla in a bowl until smooth. Gradually add sugar; mix well. Add enough milk until frosting reaches desired spreading consistency. Frost cake, sprinkle with nuts. Can double the frosting recipe!!
TIP OF THE MONTH
Be leery of teachers who tell you there is only one way to do something. There are a hundred different ways to do every part of quilting. To find the methods and styles that work best with your personality and quilting style, take classes from different teachers and read a variety of books and magazines. Take what works FOR YOU from each teacher, book, or magazine.
