KITCHEN KORNER

SOUR CREAM CHICKEN BAKE

1 cup sour cream
1 can cream of chicken soup
1/2 cup white wine
1 pkg dry golden onion soup mix
1 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
4-6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
In medium bowl mix together first 4 ingredients. Place chicken breasts in casserole sprayed with cooking spray. Top with mushrooms and pour mixed ingredients over all. Bake, uncovered, at 350* for 1 hour. Top with cheese and bake 10 more minutes. Serve with rice or noodles

REUBEN PIZZA

1 Boboli ready-to-use pizza crust
1-1 1/2 cups sauerkraut, squeezed dry
1-2 cups shredded Swiss cheese
1/4 lb thinly sliced corned beef, chopped
3/4 cup Thousand Island dressing
Spread dressing across pizza crust. Top with sauerkraut, corned beef and cheese. Bake in 400* oven 20 min or until golden and bubbly.

With this unseasonably warm weather, get your gardens ready but be very careful about planting too early. This is still Ohio and a freeze could still come! I have my herbs started inside just waiting for some yummy vegetables to cook with this summer!

TIP OF THE MONTH: Try new ideas, tools, and techniques to stay updated in the craft!

Sew Very Smooth: many of you will remember or already use the trick Shirley Stutz taught: cut a ¼ thick strip of masking tape about 6inches long and tape it along your machine. Use this edge when sewing as an edge for your fabric. This keeps all your seams uniform, helps us not to strain our older eyes, and keeps chaining moving right along. WELL, BIG NEWS!! A very enterprising woman has now manufactured a product called sew very smooth. It is a white piece of plastic that is sticky on one side. Place it down with the edge where you want it, push down and it is stuck in place for you to use as an edge. The best thin about it? You can pull it up and re-position it hundreds of times! When it no longer sticks, it is washable! Comes in lengths ranging from 2 inches to 18 inches.(?) Check out the web site: www.sewverysmooth.com

Second, have you heard of the “Edge Perfect Blade”? this is a new rotary blade for anyone that likes to embellish with a blanket stitch, ribbon, beads, anything! TREE CITY QUILTERS GUILD

MEETING MINUTES - March 12, 2012

President Cassie Anderson called the meeting to order. One guest, Dee Hart was introduced. Dee will the the judge at our quilt show in August. Dorothy Pearson, Jolene Rehm and Gwen Hoover were thanked for tonight’s refreshments.

Barb Byler requested newsletter info to be to her by March 22.

Book review presented by Janet McFarland. She shared information from a book called “A People and Their Quilts” . It was based on interviews of quilters in the Appalachian mountains.

February minutes were approved as they appeared in the newsletter.

Treasurer Naomi Lance reported an ending balance of $1303.05.

Committee Reports:

Sarah McKee announced the March birthdays.

Ruth Bishop reported there were no updates to the fair board requests.

Jolene and Jeri gave an update on upcoming One Block Wonder class and passed around the sign up sheet.

Sara Bistline will be able to get the and ruler for the class. Cost of book is $18.10 and the ruler $19.17. Indicate request for those on sign-up sheet.

Nancy Danby will hold a purse workshop on May 19th – sign up list circulated.

No updates on 2013 retreat.

Sarah announced that she holds a sewing day at the Mill House every 1st Friday of the month. Anyone can attend – she has 6 available sewing machines or you can bring your own.

New Business:

Dorothy Pearson announced there will be a MCC tie day on May 9th. We can car pool from the church leaving there at 9:30AM. Stay as long as you like and help tie quilts for MCC. Lunch furnished.

Sign up sheet circulated for Expo Center Sewing and Quilt Expo March 30th.

April meeting presentation will be made by Debi Moffet from Somewhere Sewing. Everyone in attendance will receive a discount coupon for her store.

Tickets for quilt raffle are available tonight – get them from Mabel Stocker.

Jim Rawdon distributed new NEOROC membership cards.

Cassie reminded of the auction in May and asked for volunteers for recorders. We need 3-4. Items for the auction can be anything pertaining to sewing. Proceeds will be split 50/50 with the guild or you can donate all to the guild.

Program:

Dee Hart talked about what the judge looks for and we did some practice judging with her.

Sally Kitchen reviewed the heart block swap information.

Naomi Lance was winner of the trivia question.

KITCHEN KORNER

From Cassie: In a large heavy duty plastic zip lock bag mix one package ANGEL FOOD CAKE mix and one package ANY OTHER REGULAR CAKE MIX (not angel food). Squish it together with your hands. Take out 3 tablespoons of mix, place in small glass bowl (1 cup at least). Add 2 tablespoons water and mix with a whisk. Do not grease bowl. Put into microwave for ONE minute. Remove using pot holder and invert over serving plate. Let cool before eating. (we didn't and got burned). Can be served with fruit, whip cream or is fine just plain. I used a milk chocolate regular cake mix and the smell drove the kids wild. The recipe is known as 3, 2, 1 wonder. It is just right when you want just a little something sweet.



Corn & Bean tortilla Casserole

1 pkg. 12 corn tortillas

1 c shredded cheddar cheese

1 onion rough chopped

12 oz pkg frozen corn

1 cup matchstick carrots

1 can black beans, rinsed and drained

8 oz fat free ricotta cheese

4 oz fat free yogurt

2 cans green enchilada sauce

In 9X13 pan, pour enough enchilada sauce to coat the bottom. Quarter 4 of the corn tortillas and lay them out over the bottom of the pan, on top of the sauce. In separate bowl, mix together corn, beans, onions and carrots. Spread half of this veggie mixture over the tortillas. Sprinkle this with 1/3 cup of shredded cheese. Mix ricotta and yogurt together and spread half over the casserole. Repeat with more quartered tortillas, the rest of the can of enchilada sauce, the rest of the veggies, 1/3 cup shredded cheese and then the rest of the ricotta mixture. Top with remaining 4 tortillas quartered and remaining shredded cheese. Pour half the second can of enchilada sauce (or salsa of your choice) over all. Cover with foil sprayed with Pam and bake at 400* for this, you can sauté burger or shredded chicken and mix with taco seasoning, then layer it on top of each of the first 2 layers of tortillas.

CHEESY RICE CASSEROLE

2 1/2 C cooked brown rice
3 green onions, chopped
1 C lowfat cottage cheese
1 tsp dillweed
1/4 C Parmesan Cheese, grated
1/2 C Lowfat Milk
Combine all ingredients in large bowl. Pour into a lightly greased casserole. Bake in a 350-degree oven for 15 to 20 minutes.



TIP OF THE MONTH:

A magnet kept near your sewing machine helps with locating dropped pins before your feet find them!

Sarah Bistline has graciously consented to order the books and rulers needed for this class. Jeri will have a sign up list ready at the meeting. Anyone interested in purchasing these supplies should be on the list and paid by April 1.



BYLAWS AMENDMENT, MARCH 2007

Under Article XI:



Section B. These bylaws were patterned after the resource Robert’s Rules of Order, and this book shall serve as the official reference guide when dealing with the workings of this organization. Any proposed amendment to the Bylaws must be in line with the guidelines contained in the most current edition. Also, any confusion and/or disagreements that may arise during the running of this organization shall be clarified or settled according to the guidelines in Robert’s rules of Order.



Under Article III – Membership:



Section A. Each member shall complete an information form and pay appropriate dues to the treasurer.



Article IV – Annual Dues:

Section A. Membership dues will be $15.00 per year payable by the first meeting in January in order to be included in the directory. Dues are nonrefundable.



Article V – Officers and Members-at-large



Section B. The officers and members-at-large shall perform the duties prescribed by these bylaws:



Section E. Members-at-large shall represent the concerns of the membership and assist the President.



These were all changes and amendments made to our TCQ bylaws in 2006 and 2007. Each and every one of us should be concerned with being knowledgeable of our Bylaws. Please clip and paste these changes to the bylaws into your 2012 booklet.

TREE CITY QUILTERS GUILD FEBRUARY MEETING MINUTES



President Cassie Anderson called the meeting to order. Two guests were present. Laura Noletti’s daughter-in-law Jessica and Mabel Stocker’s sister Carol. Cassie thanked the refreshment committee Jane Richardson, Danette Ferriman and Jeri Fickes.



Barb Byler is requesting newsletter information to be to her by February 22.



Four upcoming events were mentioned. Garage sale in Brimfield, application forms on table. Amish Country Quilt Show in Dalton June 7-9. Sewing Expo at the IX Center in Cleveland March 21. Mrs. Millers Mini Shop Hop in Charm March 23 & 24.



Book Review presented by Sally Kitchen. She shared information and pattern ideas from Folk Quilt Applique.



Janet made correction to January minutes adding the last name Ralston to our guest from NEORQC.



Treasurer Naomi Lance reported a balance of $1427.49.



Committee Reports:

Ruth Bishop and Mable Stocker attended the fair board meeting and presented our requests to them for more space in the Buss Building. They reported that the board was respectful and listened to their ideas, but they had no questions. It is not clear if any progress was made. The board will meet again in April to go thru the building. Guild members are encouraged to attend.



Jane Richardson will conduct a workshop on a reversible table runner Feb. 25 from 9-3 at the Church building.



Barb Byler will place by-laws correction in the next newsletter



Vicky Hartzler gave a presentation on the Retreat for 2012. The committee is looking for a less expensive option. There was discussion of responses to the survey from the last retreat. We need more participants. The instructors for the next retreat will be Janet Andrews and Judy Smith. There can be a maximum of 35 people. The date will be April 5-6-7, 2013. Vicky made a motion that the guild subsidize the retreat up to $2000. Laura Nolletti seconded the motion. After discussion a vote was taken and majority ruled. Motion passed. Ruth Bishop questioned the benefit of the retreat to the guild since not very many participated. Laura Nolletti commented that everyone had the same opportunity to attend but some chose not to.



Sara Bistline gave a presentation on our upcoming quilt show. August 10&11, 2012. The name of the quilt show will be JOYFUL QUILTS. She passed around ballots for a vote on the wording on quilt raffle tickets. It was a yes or no vote that the tickets will not state where the proceeds are going. Just the quilt show name, date of show and drawing date for the raffle. Yes votes were in the majority.

There will be a boutique where members can sell items. 10% of the sale will go the guild treasury.

There will be a challenge “Lincoln Highway Runs through Tree City Country”

Each member was given a fat eighth of black fabric to be used for the road and asked to create a scene from anywhere along the route to hang at our quilt show.



New Business:

Ruth Bishop has had a request from the library to put up another display. She asked for items to add to the display and said she would take charge of it again.

It was decided we should have a table at the Dalton Quilt Show in June where we can display our raffle quilt and sell tickets. Janet McFarland to call and find out about that.



Cassie reminded us about the auction in May and asked for volunteers for recorders. We will need 3 or 4 plus our treasurer.



Program: Sally Kitchen presented a variety of heart shaped blocks and has put together a heart block swap. A sign up sheet was passed around. However many sign up will be responsible to make that many 6 ½” quilt blocks with a pink/red heart on white background.

KITCHEN KORNER

Pecan Topped Baked White Fish

2 – 4 fish fillets

3 Tbl butter + 3-4 Tbl olive oil

1 stalk celery, chopped fine

1 small onion, chopped fine

4 oz. fresh mushrooms, chopped

¼ cup finely chopped carrot

Salt & pepper

¾ cupped chopped pecans

1 tsp cayenne pepper

1 Tbl paprika

In casserole dish melt butter with olive oil in microwave until just melted. Stir together. Add chopped celery, onion, mushrooms and carrots. Add salt and pepper to taste. Toss all together to coat all the vegetables. Add fish fillets or steaks and carefully turn to cover with butter/veggie mixture. Top the prepared fish with chopped pecans and sprinkle evenly with cayenne and paprika. Cover, leaving 2 vents (I placed the lid on askew) and bake at 350* for 20-30 minutes, depending on thickness of the fish. Uncover and bake 10 more minutes.

ROASTED RED PEPPER SPREAD ~

2 - 12oz jars roasted red peppers, do not discard liquid

6 oz goat cheese

1/2 cup pine nuts (I used half pumpkin seeds and half sunflower seeds)

1 cup chopped escarole or spinach or fresh basil (depends on season and availability)

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

On cookie sheet, toss together seeds or nuts and about 1T Parmesan. Toast lightly. In baking dish sprayed with cooking spray, make two layers of roasted red peppers (cut into small strips), then escarole or basil, then seeds or nuts, then goat cheese. Drizzle liquid remaining in ONE of the roasted red pepper jars over all, then top with remaining grated Parmesan cheese. Bake at 375* for 10-12 minutes. You can garnish all with chopped tomatoes and chopped black olives. Serve with crackers or crusty bread.

EASY BEEF STROGANOFF

1 ½ lbs lean ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
1 cup skim milk
3T flour
½ cup Parmesan cheese
½ cup white wine
8 oz fresh mushrooms, sliced
½ tsp oregano
In large skillet sauté ground beef and onion. Drain. In small saucepan thicken milk with flour, stirring constantly over medium heat. Add cheese, wine, mushrooms, oregano, plus salt and pepper to taste. Stir until smooth and add to meat mixture. Heat through and serve over cooked noodles or rice.

FAVORITE CHICKEN

4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves
1/4 cup Dijon mustard
1/4 cup teriyaki sauce
4 green onions, chopped
1 can mushrooms, drained
1/4 cup bottled roasted red peppers, diced
1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
Preheat oven to 400 degrees and line a 9x13 baking dish or pan with foil, spray foil with non-stick spray. Measure 1/4 cup mustard in a glass cup measure, add teriyaki sauce to make 1/2 cup total. Stir to blend and pour mixture over chicken in pan. Sprinkle with mushrooms, onions and red pepper. Bake uncovered for 25 minutes; remove from oven and sprinkle with cheese; bake for 10 more minutes or until chicken is done.



TIP OF THE MONTH:

Carrying a 3 X 5 card in your purse or wallet with handy information can save you time and frustration. One piece of information I regularly carry with me are common quilt sizes.

Comforter dimensions include a 14” drop on the sides and bottom without extra for the pillow tuck. A comforter is designed for use with a dust ruffle and pillow shams.

Coverlet/Bedspread dimensions include a 21” drop on the sides and bottom and 12 “ for the pillow tuck.

Moderate to heavy quilting may shrink a quilt 1 – 3 inches. Consider this shrinkage when planning your finished size.

January Minutes

January Minutes

Meeting was called to order by President Cassie Anderson.

Our guild has been selected by NEORC to be featured on their website. Marie______________from NEOROC was in attendance to observe and take photos for the website.

Cassie explained a trivia game that will be held each month. There will be a question at the sign up table. Each person writes the answer on a piece of paper and a name will be drawn from all the correct answers.

Thank you card read from Ruth Bishop, Quilter of the Year for 2011.

Thanks to Barb Byler and Vicky Hartzler for compiling this years' Membership Booklet. By Laws were included this year and there are some changes to be made. They will work on locating current bylaws and if/when located will update everyone's booklet.

One change to meeting programs - Rose Marie's program on Cultural Influences in Quilting will be August 13 and the auction will take place on May 14. Further discussion of the auction will be held next meeting to decide on distribution of auction money.

Cassie explained the planned monthly book review. A sign up sheet was circulated for a 3-4 minute book review presentation on any kind of book about quilting. Can be a novel, instruction book or anything that pertains to quilting.

Community projects - first baby of the year quilts were delivered. Thank you to Gwen and Dorothy for making those quilts.

9AM - 3PM taught by Jane Richardson. Cost $5. Sign up sheet circulated.
Quilt Show August 10& 11
Sara Bistline reported that the committee met in December. She went over the categories for judging. There will be a quilters boutique. There will also be vendors. We will be presented with a challenge at next meeting. Each will receive 1/8 yd. of fabric to create an 18 X 24 piece for "Lincoln Highway runs thru Tree City Country". More details to follow.

New Business

Mable Stocker was appointed as historian for the guild. She is collecting materials and will get them into a scrapbook for members to enjoy. It was suggested that the scrapbook be displayed at the quilt show in August.

Discussion of a buy/sell section to be included in the newsletter. Tabled until next meeting.

PROGRAM

"What's on a Label" was presented by Sally Kitchen with much interaction from members.
Jolene Rehm and Jeri Fickes talked about choosing fabric for the One Block Wonder. They will conduct a workshop on April 14 (changed from date shown in membership booklet)

Naomi Lance was the winner of the trivia game.

DECEMBER MEETING: CHRISTMAS PARTY!

Please plan on joining the guild at our annual Christmas party. Our challenge is to sew anything with a tree in it. For our gift exchange, we are to wrap a shoe box that has been filled with gifts related to quilting in some way. One item for every letter of the word C H R I S T M A S. 1. At least 1 item must be purchased and 2. All items must be related to Quilting.

You can bring a plate of goodies (a dozen cookies, candy or tasty treat) to exchange. Don’t forget your covered dish!

I want to express my sincere thanks for all your support and willingness to take on tasks to promote quilting and the guild. I hope you enjoyed the year as much as I did. I also hope that you learned something new during the year. I was always amazed at all the beautiful and artistic things that you displayed during the Show and Tell. Each one of you is a very talented and artistic person. I also enjoy the friendliness of the Guild. We come from many different backgrounds but are held together by a common thread. channel 45 at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday evenings. This program is presented by the Kentucky Quilts Project and Shelley Zegart. It is a nine part series on the history of quilts. Very interesting!

KITCHEN CORNER:

FAST AND FABULOUS PUMPKIN DIP
Mix together:
8 oz softened cream cheese
2 C powdered sugar
1 T vanilla
Add:
15oz can pureed pumpkin
1 T cinnamon
1 T pumpkin pie spice
½ tsp nutmeg
1 tsp frozen orange juice concentrate
Stir to blend thoroughly. Refrigerate 1 hr and serve with ginger snaps or apple slices.

Most of us raised in the 50's and 60's have vivid memories of the requisite Jello salad at every holiday table. It usually had marshmallows and if it was summer, mayonnaise. Give this Jello salad a try if you want a grown-up re-mix!! It tastes as sophisticated as it looks!

FESTIVE BERRY MOLD
2 - 3oz pkgs raspberry jello
2 cups boiling water
1 can whole berry cranberry sauce
2 cups chunky applesauce
1 - 11oz Mandarin oranges, drained
Dressing:
8 oz softened cream cheese
8 oz sour cream
Mix jello and boiling water together until well blended. Add cranberry sauce, applesauce and orange segments and stir gently. Pour into large, greased jello mold. Chill overnight. With electric mixer blend together softened cream cheese and sour cream until smooth. Chill. When ready to serve, unmold gelatin onto serving plate and place sour cream / cream cheese mixture in the center of the mold as a dressing.

Whether you have kids at your holiday table or not, this unique dessert is guaranteed to bring out the kid in everyone!
LUSCIOUS LAYERED PUMPKIN DESSERT
1 pkg (10-count) Twinkies
1 - 8 oz pkg cream cheese, softened
1 cup confectioners' sugar
1 - 8 oz container Cool Whip, thawed
2 - 3.4 oz pkgs instant vanilla pudding
1 - 15 oz can pumpkin puree
1 cup milk
1 ½ tsp pumpkin pie spice
Slice Twinkies in half, lengthwise and place, cream side up along the bottom of a 9x13 pan. Blend together softened cream cheese, confectioners' sugar and half of the Cool Whip until smooth. Spread over Twinkies. Combine pudding, pumpkin spice and milk. Whisk until well-blended and spread over cream cheese mixture. Refrigerate several hours and serve with remaining Cool Whip and sprinkles of pumpkin pie spice.

Now, on the lighter side.....
TUSCAN WHITE BEAN SOUP
1 onion, chopped
3 ribs celery, chopped
3 large cloves garlic, minced or grated
1 - 15 oz can pumpkin puree
4 cups chicken broth
1 - 15 oz can white beans, rinsed and drained
½ head of cabbage, chopped
½ tsp dried oregano

salt/pepper
In stock pot heat 3T olive oil and sauté onion, celery and garlic until tender and onions are translucent. Add remaining ingredients, cover and simmer, stirring occasionally until cabbage is very tender. Serve with warm crusty bread. (optional: use an immersion blender and puree the soup until it thickens and has a coarse blended texture)

AMAZING MUFFINS
Combine one box cake mix (try German chocolate or spice!) and 1 - 15 oz can solid pack pumpkin. Mix well and pour into greased or papered muffin tins. Bake at 350* for 20-30 min. Be sure to inhale a lot while these are baking!! Yummmmm!

If this recipe doesn't say autumn then nothing can!
APPLE/SWEET POTATO BAKE
3 Granny Smith apples, cored and thinly sliced (you can leave peel on)
Toss with 1-2 T lemon juice
2 -3 sweet potatoes peeled and sliced as thinly as possible
¼ cup apple cider
¼ cup melted butter
1 tsp cinnamon
½ tsp nutmeg
Set aside nicest slices of apples and sweet potatoes for garnish and layer the rest in 1 ½ qt baking dish, alternating potatoes and apples. Place reserved apples and potatoes across top of casserole in a pinwheel pattern. Mix cider with spices and over mixture. Drizzle half the melted butter over all. Cover and bake at 350* for 1 hr. Brush remaining butter over top, sprinkle with a bit more cinnamon and nutmet, and continue to bake, uncovered, for 15 minutes.

Minutes of November Meeting

Minutes

Call to Order: President, Mabel Stoker called the meeting to order. Two visitors, Linda and Bonnie, and a new member, Sarah McKee were welcomed. Mabel thanked the refreshment committee, Marian Wellert, Tonya Wellert, Rose Marie Babb and Lou Ella Imhoff. Birthdays were recognized, and there were many of them.

Secretary’s Report: Vicky Hartzler made a correction on the people who were Quilter of the Year—Sally Kitchen was one, and Betty Boreman was not. This was corrected in the minutes.

Treasurer’s Report: Jane Richardson reported that there is a balance of $1,242.94. Many people did pay dues at the meeting, so this will increase by next month.

Old Business: Mabel gave a reminder that dues must be paid this month for people to be included in the membership booklet.

Donna Williams and Janice Miller conducted the election of officers. There was a selection, and the following won the positions: Members at large were Sara Bistline and Gwen Hoover; Secretary will be Janet McFarland; Treasurer will be Naomi Lance and Vice President will be Jim Rawdon

Cassie asked people to sign up for committees and the sheet was passed around.

Janet McFarland, Jeri Fickes and Nancy Danby conducted the Quilter of the Year election. The winner will be announced at the Christmas party.

New Business:

Mabel read a letter that she and Vicky Hartzler had prepared to send to the Fair Board regarding the displays at Buss Hall. Suggestions were obtained from the group and the decision was made to send it. Barb Byler suggested the letter be sent to each board member individually so it is sure to be seen by all. The Fair Board meets on the third Monday at 8am and in December and January, will meet at 1pm on Saturdays at the Red Cross building at the Fair grounds.

Quilters Give a Hoot is the name of the NEORQC get away weekend on Feb. 17, 18 and 19, 2012. The website to check it out is getaway@neorqc.com. It will be held at Quail Hollow.
Committee Reports:

Sally Kitchen discussed the Christmas party, which will be on 12/12/11 at 6pm at the church. Table service will be provided.

Sara Bistline said she would have a report on the Quilt Show committee next month.

Program: Carol Remington gave a lecture and demo on making floor quilts. Thank you so much for your time, Carol.
