HAPPY SPRING!I think the spell of winter has broken! The spring flowers are popping through the soil and, in some places, showing their beautiful heads. The added sunlight is certainly a boost to the spirit. I imagine it won't be long until we are complaining about the heat! All of this is what makes life wonderful!We have a lot happening with all of the workshops that are planned. The "No Frills Retreat" was wonderful. Thanks for Michelle Reed and her committee for a job well done and for all of the members who participated. The food was wonderful, the flowers were beautiful, the room was fantastic but most importantly----the conversation and laughter! Retreats are a wonderful way to share and get to know your fellow quilters. Thanks to Becky Hamilton for her projects taught. We had visits from Witches and Santas, OH MY!Quilt Show is the main "happening" for April. I hope you are finishing up your entries and have gotten your paperwork to Mary Mahoney. Don't forget to print out your story sheets to turn in with your quilts.Happy Quilting! Kay

Challenges - Will send the 2018 challenges in each issue of the newsletter. I know I am always wondering exactly what they are!
Kay introduced this year’s challenges at the February meeting. She’s chosen small projects that can help us learn techniques in a short amount of time.
· Challenge 1 - Mystery Squares: Kay provided manila envelopes with instructions & color specifications for a block. The idea is to do something you hadn’t tried before or something you might not choose for yourself. Bring the completed square & the envelope back and it’ll be passed on to someone else. When we have enough squares, we’ll make quilts for the veteran’s home (12 blocks per quilt). You’ll get a token for each block you complete. Turn your tokens in in November, prize in December. You must use the 3 colors prescribed, and you can then add one other color as accents. Final dimension: 12 ½” squares. You can bring your square/envelope back whenever you finish – you can turn one in & pick up another each month, or contribute less frequently if you like.
· Challenge 2: Monster Quilt (Applique): Kay provided a sheet with monster parts – make your own square. No color limitations. Check out Monster Quilts on line & put your own twist on what you see. Make a block & bring it in. 13” start for 12 ½” square. Background = color of your choice.
· Challenge 3: Portrait Quilt – create a picture quilt of a person or a building/landscape using small squares/pieces of different tonal value. You must provide a picture of whatever image you’re creating for comparison. Carpenter’s Cup in Smithville has an interesting example (picture of bistro made up of small squares.) You get a token for your little bag (a big token!) for completing this challenge. Should be at least 36” – want it to be free-flowing, not tedious.
Activities:
· Scrap Bag: We exchanged the bags of scraps we brought in, and will now use them to create “made fabric.” Ideally, we’d spend 15 minutes a day on this project. Stitch scraps together to make fabric. Don’t look at colors – just reach into the bag, pick pieces & stitch. Bring your fabric to the April guild meeting. You can use newsprint as your foundation if you like. Do press to be sure you keep your fabric flat. Don’t have to end up with a square or any other shape. In a future meeting we’ll see what can be created with our “made fabric”. Make as many pieces as you like.
· Bingo: Kay provided us with sewing-themed bingo cards & macaroni markers. Mary M drew & called. We had a winner very quickly (I didn’t catch who won…)
2018 QUILT SHOW
Our show will be here before you know it. The dates are Friday April 20 from 9am to 6pm and Saturday April 21, from 9am to 3:30pm.
Quilt show Reminders:
Wear a white shirt with your guild name tag when working.
Please bring used quilting magazines or catalogs (good condition only) to be used as clipboards by attendees for their viewers' choice ballots. Also, if you have working pens that you don't need anymore, we can always use them too.
Help advertise our show by "sharing" a picture of the bookmark on your facebook page.
If you haven't already done so, please let Mary Mahoney know ASAP how many items you plan to display at the quilt show. Don't forget your applique Christmas tree - for those who took this class - your wall hanging is probably stored with your Christmas decorations!
Check with Vicky Hartzler at our guild meeting to sign up on the volunteer schedule. If everyone helps, it will make a lighter load.

Two challenges have been designed for the show:
Applique Challenge - Floral Applique Item of your choice. Hand or machine applique. Quilter's interpretation. (The planning team reserves the right to split the entries into more categories as needed.)
Garden Party Challenge- Floral themed item. The pattern and/or fabric should have a floral design. (Again, the team reserves the right to split entries into additional categories.) Quiltmakers' interpretation.
The committee handed out quilt show information including category information in February. We are asking this year the quilt story forms that will be displayed on the quilts be turned in typed and ready to hang with the quilts. In the near future we will be e-mailing a template for your use. If you do not have access to a computer and printer, we will have an alternative plan for you.

WORKSHOPS
See Mary Mahoney and her team Staycie Miller, Barb Byler, Pat Hall, Kevin Horst if you’d like to teach a class. April will be busy with the quilt show. On June 30, Staycie will teach a market bag class in the afternoon, and Mary M will teach no-sew gift bags in the morning - $9 pattern. Barb will teach a quilt class in July (details to follow) And Kevin's teaching a strip quilt from 3 Dudes Quilting - date TBD.
The Monthly Ongoing Hand Workers will meet on the first Friday of each month from 9:00 to 11:50 at Parkview Christian Church, in the Fireside Room. Meeting dates for 2018: Jan 5,
Feb. 2, March 2, April 6, May 4, June 1 July 6, Aug. 3, Sept 7, Oct. 5, Nov. 2,and Dec 7. (These dates are subject to change) Join us and bring your handwork of any kind (no sewing machines) a small snack to share, and show and tell. Guests are always welcome.
